Yeah this is my biggest problem with F4 so far. Otherwise I'm having fun and enjoying the setting quite a bit.

So I totally foresaw the main plot being a chore when I first saw whichever trailer that was, but I also powered through 3 giving only the minimal amount of poo poo about LiamDad. I'm more worried about melee apparently being bad again? And the lack of any notable new features besides the crafting crap?

Like straight poo poo is it at least fun because I'm not expecting much in the line of characterization/plot from bethesda after New Vegas.

Yeah, I am really getting to dislike the male protagonist in this game. He's characterized (and voiced, ugh) just enough that it keeps me from projecting an arbitrary personality onto him, but the level of characterization we get is also so little that I don't give a drat about the guy they force us to get to know for five minutes before the world ends. I enjoyed playing the Courier in NV, because he was whatever I wanted him to be. I enjoyed playing the specific role of Geralt of Rivia, because Geralt is cool and interesting. This guy kinda just sucks.

I think it's just because dialog wheel + voiced protagonist is The Thing You Do now when it comes to AAA RPGs with dialog trees.

It worked well in Mass Effect because Mass Effect was explicitly designed to evoke science fiction movies. It was a dialog system designed to allow for cinematic scenes and it succeeded at that, for a lot of reasons. Alpha Protocol had a similar system for a similar reason: you were supposed to feel like you were playing a spy movie. Now that it's been grafted onto every type of RPG that isn't a Kickstarted throwback RPG, it's starting to really show how limiting it can be.

ImpAtom posted:

Luck has a lot of VATS perk because it is the critical hits thing and critical hits are more Vats focused.

Yeah, and I didn't get that before I made my character. I didn't realize that critical hits only really came from that Crit meter in VATS, so I went for 6 Luck so I could get Better Criticals. But since headshots, sneak attacks, and criticals are all separate now, I kind of regret it.

Its definitely fun. The only question is how long will it be fun, but I figure on PC even if the main game becomes a disappointment pretty fast (which I don't see happening) there'll be tons of mods to do all kinds of silly poo poo.

Some goons are having a blast and others are saying its the worst game literally ever (lol) so YMMV.

Devil's advocate, but I think even Fallout 3 did a better job in making you care than this game, which really says something. Even if you only cared enough to tell your dad gently caress you when you found him, it was still a choice you were able to make.

No, I think you're right. Fallout 3 didn't make me care about my character's father, but it did make me care about the other Vault 101 residents, like Amata and even the Tunnel Snakes dude. I think it was because they actually had characterization and I was able to choose to a much greater degree how my character interacted with them.

Melee is garbage because Bethesda doesn't understand that melee has to do more damage than guns to be worth using, game is generally fun and shooting feels like a shooter from THIS YEAR (holy poo poo!!!!), you can give your dog armor so he won't get knocked out by a single ghoul slap

Every time I hear someone talking about a Melee/unarmed I think about an old interview with Bruce Lee where he said that martial arts is pretty neutered nowadays because guess what, people have guns now and they can shoot you.

Personally I keep a decent melee weapon on my character but it's mostly for trash clearing. Building around it would be pain

Ideally the character should be a shell for me to play and have fun as I want to, based on my motivations. Not the other way around. The character shouldn't feel like its limiting me into a pre-conceived role, and I have to pretend to like what my character likes.

It's not a distinction because it doesn't exist. Never in Fallout has your character been a shell to pour your own motivations into. You're always playing a defined character with plot-dictated motivations. The particulars on how you accomplish those motivations are different (and utterly immaterial since 'How you did it' never gets brought up) but you're still playing someone.

There is no way to play Fallout 1 that doesn't lead to V13 surviving, Arroyo being founded. No way to play F2 that doesn't save Arroyo to some degree. The only outlier is New Vegas, whose developers removed the "And so the Courier hosed off after doing his job because that's all he was here for" ending. Which is a shame, since it's the only NV that makes sense for the defined character you're playing.

Also the voiced dialog and limited options is making me really want to reroll my Sterling Archer character. It's impossible to effectively roleplay that kind of character in this system, or at least, I feel like I'm fighting the dialog system to do it. (My girlfriend will be disappointed because she helped me make him look as much like Archer as is possible within the character creation.)

Maybe I'll have more fun playing Laser-And-Science-Man!

Speaking of Lasers-And-Science, anyone have tips for keeping your power armor within easy access? It seems like the best way to do it is to leave it at a settlement, explore an area on foot, and then fast travel away and back with your power armor if you need it, but that feels extra clunky to me.

That probably is the easiest way but don't forget to remove the core or one of your companions/random dude at the settlement can potentially steal the power armor and not give it back. Happened to someone about 100 pages ago.

I can't decide if I want to do sneaking.

I plan to play on Hard just to run into more legendaries, and it seems like I can look forward to getting mobbed and ripped to shreds if I don't sneak around. But I also want to use lasers, and you can't silence those, so they have no synergy with a stealth build at all. Not really sure what to do about that.

We got some serious shit to discuss.

You can also romance freely and there's no jealousy checks, so even though the game starts you off in a monogamous heterosexual relationship, by the end you can be playing a polyamorous bisexual single mother.

So long as the RNG doesn't make it so your Charisma check fails and the character decides they don't want to be in a relationship with you.
