I can understand the reticence of movements to be covered by what is a largely biased media, but at the same time I can't get past that they don't want people reporting on what are public events. If you're sitting in a public space protesting, you don't have to answer questions or move for the journalist or anything, but stopping them from photographing you? You've put yourself out there, and can't expect privacy.

That doesn't mean journos shouldn't be conscious of the damage they can do by publishing those photos, but at the same time I'm aware that a lot of important photography of protests and such throughout the world could get people in serious trouble with their governments. I followed the Egyptian protests in 2011 and no doubt much of the photography I saw was of people who could have been arrested for their appearance in them, but I doubt it would have had nearly as much impact if all the faces were blurred.

THE RESERVED LIST! THE RESERVED LIST! I CANNOT SHUT UP ABOUT THE RESERVED LIST!
I feel like that article is coming from an understandable place, but at the same time it basically seems as though the thesis is veering close to "the ability of the press to report is bad because the police are out of control," even if that's not what the author consciously intended to say. Which seems to me like a really really bad path to go down.

Also, the author doesn't seem to provide any evidence to support the claim that journalists "arrive solely to advance their careers," which is, well, a too-broad brush at best and at worst is an incredibly lovely dismissal of the role played by (ethical) journalists in a free society.

That's because the nerve cells that connect teenagers' frontal lobes with the rest of their brains are sluggish. Teenagers don't have as much of the fatty coating called myelin, or "white matter," that adults have in this area.

Think of it as insulation on an electrical wire. Nerves need myelin for nerve signals to flow freely. Spotty or thin myelin leads to inefficient communication between one part of the brain and another....

Recent studies show that neural insulation isn't complete until the mid-20s.

This also may explain why teenagers often seem so maddeningly self-centered. "You think of them as these surly, rude, selfish people," Jensen says. "Well, actually, that's the developmental stage they're at. They aren't yet at that place where they're thinking about — or capable, necessarily, of thinking about the effects of their behavior on other people. That requires insight."

And insight requires — that's right — a fully connected frontal lobe.

That study doesn't say they lack it, it says they're slow to realize the consequences of their actions because the part of their brains that give insight isn't fully wired up yet.

Taken seriously absolutely. That doesn't mean throw the guy in prison where he learns that being a white supremacist is the only thing protecting his rear end against daily beatdowns by the minorities he's already biased against, thus hardening his resolve with ample evidence to support it and like-minded individuals to reinforce it and also likely teach him more violent ways to express it.

To be fair, most of the people who are calling for this kid's head or this kid to be thrown in prison for a THREAT would also agree to the sentiment that we throw too many people in prison and that our prison system usually acts as an incubator for crime and criminals, rather than as a teaching mechanism.

These same people would also probably agree that many of the innocent muslims and non-muslims we threw into Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and other prisons were likely innocent before they went in, but were turned into jihadists by the time they came out.

HOWEVER this 19 year old white kid who made death threats to MINORITIES oh yeah THROW THE BOOK AT HIM!

Agreed that they shouldn't throw him into Genpop and call it a day. Some kind of rehabilitation could still work at this age, but he still needs to be kept away from society until he does come around.

Community service would actually probably be really beneficial for him. Force him to work side-by-side with the minorities he hates and eventually he'll likely humanize them rather than consider them monsters trying to take away his home and way of life (likely thoughts developed while being brought up by racists).

I mean if we can't blame a poor black person for being poor and instead look to his upbringing and situation, why are we bloodthirsty for a racist kid who is likely equally a product of his upbringing and situation? That's my point.
