I am so mad I decided to read Lazarus in trades. Anyone else pick up the new Warren Ellis Bond or the Grant Morrison Santa-as-badass-ranger? I thought both were pretty great. Was talking about the Bond with some folks and we decided that basically all Ellis protagonists are some sort of James Bond derivative anyway, so it works suprisingly well.

I'm not really sure how I feel about Klaus. I'm prolly the second biggest Santa fan on the forums next to Benito Cereno and Morrison is one of the strongest writers working today. Unfortunately I feel like Klaus draws too heavily from the Rankin/Bass Santa special. Grimsvig is pretty much straight up Sombertown and Lord Magnus is legit just the Burgermeister Meisterburger. The sequence where Santa goes on a shamanic vision quest is legit, though.

I picked up Klaus today, and while I haven't read it yet, I flipped through it and I can tell that I shouldn't have been worried that Morrison's version of Santa would overlap with my own Christmas comics too much. It definitely looks like it's pulling from Santa Claus Is Coming to Town more than any authentic existing lore.

I'm liking Shutter but I'm not really interested in the whole lion-man has family problems/vacation in cat-land thing they've got going. It's still good but not really that interesting compared to previous issues. Also I was getting Quest for Glory 2 flashbacks looking at those alleyways and city in Shutter #16. I wonder if that was a reference?

W+D 16: Bapho-burger! And (possibly) more evidence that Ananke can give powers to people at her leisure, rather than because they're destined. No freaking clue what's happening in the Videogames ending. Can they see into The Morrigan's past somehow?

That's his smiley face button, and he looks like the figure McKelvie pointed out in the crowd in the first Morrigan sequence as him. Whether that means he somehow changed his fate by becoming a god or if he's still going to die alone in a hospital bed, I don't know. Nobby fucked around with this message at 03:24 on Nov 12, 2015 |

Monstress is the fantasy I've been waiting for, and with a triple-length first issue, it's already in my top single issues of the year. Good god I hope it can keep this quality up.

I dug it too. Someone on the last page called it scenery porn? does that mean, like, a lot of meditative taking in of the environments? I didn't really get that from this, it seemed fairly action packed, but that sounds like something I would also like :P

Gillen talks about this in his notes for this issue. here Gonna keep this spoilered as its refers to upcoming stuff too... What you actually see is not your own death but the person you're going to fall in love with, at the moment of their death. Also confirmed that this is Dionysus, and this is leading directly in to the plot of the next arc. So who's the person on the bed? They appear to have some kind of marks or tattoos on their arms... Also, it gets said every issue, but gently caress Annanke! That lady is just the worst. Its definitely looking as if she can transform people at will. Also, this issue was lots of fun! NONE MORE GOTH! etc... I really enjoyed Cameron and Marian's backstory, and the weirdly light-hearted tone of the thing really worked, unlike in the first issue of the arc which was kind of jarring. I was really sold on the relationship. I'm not so sold on Baal's increasingly tortured and clumsy insults though (Though I guess I did kind of like "Crow Road to Nowhere").

It works for me since I'm pretty sure Baal just isn't that bright. He's basically been Ananke's unknowing muscle with how reactionary, unthinking, and uncontrolled he is. I'm still pissed with the way he tried to bring in Luci by just thunderbolting the poo poo out of everything, way to deescalate dumbass.

Is anyone else getting tired of how emotionally manipulative Saga is? Back when it started, it looked like the comic was aiming to explore war and tolerance in interesting ways but now it's clear that they're less interested in exploring these issues than using them as vehicles to bring absolute misery into the lives of these characters the comic labors so much to make us care about. I got the exact same impression from reading Game of Thrones, where it seemed the book cared less about telling a story and more about exploiting a hot-cold dynamic with the reader. I think there's a Warren Ellis quote where he criticizes We3 for getting most of its kick from emotional manipulation ("Here are some adorable cute animals! Now watch them die!"), and I think Saga has fallen into the same trap – "Here's a glimmer of hope for this family that deserves happiness! Now watch it crumble away in the most horrifying possible way!" over and over again. The ending of this week's issue was ridiculous. # ? Nov 27, 2015 20:13 |

My annoyances with Saga come partly from the emotional manipulation but also from what are now clearly Vaughan-isms. A character's feelings are allowed to disrupt the plot or others' motivations if they shout 'gently caress.' Narration from the future-girl will always be presented as Chicken Soup For Saga's Soul and unquestionably true. Fiona Staples's art will keep bailing out BKV's apparent lack of interest in layout - giant splash page with a quip, please! I used to read about BKV deferring to the talents of Staples at cons and think cool, a writer who can share the credit, but now it's clear she's keeping the ship afloat. I also remember reading a claim about a dragon sucking its own dick several months ago and thinking it was a metaphor, then read that trade and lost all interest in the story. The cast used to lively and unpredictable, now they're just a bunch of mopey assholes who keep using "my BABY" to justify dire measures. Two issues into Paper Girls, I'm worried all the same problems will emerge. Save us, Chiang... you're our only hope.
