If anyone listened to Metro Morning in Toronto a month or two ago, Fairlawn United Church that's been trying to get their sponsored family into the country are expecting them by Christmas. :unsmith:

The MCC does good work. Ten Thousand Villages was the first fair trade organization in the world and they're partnered with the MCC. My parents volunteered for Mennonite Disaster Services in Wichita, rebuilding houses after a tornado. More controversially, they're a part of Christian Peacemaker Teams.

After the Balkan Wars, the tiny rural Saskatchewan community I grew up in (largely Mennonite) sponsored a Bosnian family. It was a massive culture shock for them and they moved to Calgary after a few years, but they keep in touch with the community and it sounds like they're doing pretty well. Hopefully the Syrian refugees can integrate despite the negativity. And it's heartening to think that we successfully brought about 25,000 Muslim Bosniaks to Canada and we somehow haven't been wracked with terrorism.

Man, all my catholic priest, who I was an altar boy for 10 years for, did was embezzle a large amount of money to go gambling at the Casino du Lac Leamy. That would be an ecumenical matter.

(But seriously, it was him self-medicating his depression. And when the story broke, I did reach out to him and offer my support because he was a good priest,, and a good man)

I know a compulsive gambler and the guy is totally nuts. He is unkempt, wears crocs and tattered clothes. His entire apartment is bare and empty. Most nights he sleeps in Casino hotels because if the comps they give him. All he ever has to eat at home is like really really cheap stuff like instant noodles or canned food that he got at a discount god knows where. He basically pays as little as humanly possible for his living costs so he can spend the rest of his money on gambling.

I knew a person who lived a high lifestyle on a pittance income, and ended up stealing from their girlfriend and her family to gamble the money (thousands on credit cards). What a good person, to saddle others with debt, and they couldn't sue as he fled the country back home

They were lying out their rear end or predicting a not unreasonable 2% growth and got 1.2%? If that kind of somewhat optimistic growth prediction bugs you, check out the Ontario plan to balance the budget and prepare to be ... annoyed.

quote:

The financial accountability office report flagged a second serious threat to balancing the budget — the reliance on optimistic revenue projections. The government's plan projects 4.3 per cent annual revenue growth between 2014-15 and 2017-18.

This represents a significant increase over the past four years, when annual revenue growth averaged just 2.6 per cent. In other words, the government is hoping annual revenue growth over the next three years will be around two-thirds higher than has been the case over the past four years.

No way. Even if they were entirely on the level you can't accurately predict how economic shifts might affect the government's projected revenue. When the Ontario Liberals first came to power they got the same rude awakening.
