It doesn't seem to have made its way upstate, but I'll wait and hope my contacts have paid off.

I'm not going to bother reading 137 pages to find this out. Just to satisfy my own curiosity, how many Canadians are in this thread? The beer thread is sparse, since the scene is so regional/expensive/small here, and I figured I'd check here too. Actual whisk(e)y content : I love scotch especially Sherry barrel finishes, learning bourbon, and RYE IS MY JAM. I recently had Bulliet Rye and thought it was good, decent spicy finish,if a little slick. Whats the general consensus on some Rye worth looking for?

I think Basil Hayden is pretty well regarded here but it's been a couple pages since the last rye discussion. Sazerac also. Many of the ryes come out of the massive MCP distillery in the USA and get aged / branded differently under different labels. Despite mass production some of these are good (such as the Bulliet Rye) and others are not great.

A good whiskey is 66 gilead's stuff. They''re in Prince Edward county, and they use a fair bit of rye in the bill. Also, 40 creek usually is nice.

I've been visiting Wisconsin for work and a bartender turned me on to New Richmond Rye from 45th Parallel distillery. It's pretty good stuff, great mouthfeel, good balance, the only thing I would change would be to up the spice a little (it's a rye after all...) If you're in Minnesota or Wisconsin I recommend tracking a bottle down, it's definitely worth it. Knucklebear fucked around with this message at 05:53 on Nov 8, 2015 |

Been checking in at a number of stores weekly for the past month and a half hunting for pretty much any LE release (and in the process, fully understanding I'll never even see a bottle, let alone get a bottle of Pappy/BTAC) At one of the stores I went to yesterday the manager on duty slyly says "you may want to come back in tomorrow morning" - so, I do so, and I managed to snag a bottle of EC18. Hopefully I'll somehow pull off the same thing with the 4RLE

My new favorite scotch. Lightly salted fruit / yoghurt on the nose, how interesting and different. vanilla / smoke on the tongue/finish with (at the risk of sounding posh or retarded) tropical breeze? Second favorite new scotch. This poo poo is literally bananas.

Can confirm, those are both excellent. Never had anything from Bruichladdich that wasn't, really. "Literally bananas" can be had a lot more easily/cheaply than Scapa 16 though.

Huh, I had that Crown Royal rye. Thought it was... better than anything else I'd had from Crown Royal at least. And it only cost like $30 so I guess it was good for the price. Don't know about WHISKY OF THE YEAR. Somewhat on topic: Any good sites for whisky reviews, or how do you find good reviews, or should I just ask in the thread? There's a few things that have popped up around here that I'm curious about.

Eagle Rare must have come a long way to get on the list. Sure it was 17 year but still, Eagle Rare? That's more shocking than Crown. It's bullshit anyway or else OGD100 would be at the top every year.

The Eagle Rare 17 year has been above average/good for awhile now.

Also, I had the Jefferson's Groth today and it was incredibly good. The only thing that I can really compare it to is the Amador whiskey, but they're honestly nothing like one another. I paid $70 for it, and it's worth any penny. I'm seeing it over $125 at a lot of places online, and that's more than I'd spend for it. If you're able to grab it for under $85, it's well worth it.

I've never tried ER17 and probably never will unless I go to a bourbon tasting where it's served. Don't get me wrong, I believe it's good, just skeptical it's worth the asking price. However, I had to try this ... very sweet, prominent rye, but I believe there is some white spirit added as it has that rubbing alcohol smell (or on the nose for you fancy drinkers). I'm not disappointed at this price, $30, but I'm not sure I would buy it again. Daleks give it one thumbs up, one thumbs down... just kidding, Daleks don't have thumbs!

Right now it's my favourite OB, I prefer it to the 18 which is a little too woody for my palate. The replacement is their new 8 y/o - The Hielan', much more bourbon cask in there but still very nice. Will be cracking open a bottle at the weekend. Managed to get one for £24(!!!!!) when I was up on Speyside recently.

Might have something to do with the strain of yeast used. Some beers also have a strong banana aroma due to the yeast used, like hefeweizen.

Seriously, the 15y/o has pretty much disappeared from shelves in the UK now. They didn't have any in Gordon & Macphail in Elgin nor the Duncan Taylor shop in Huntly (two of the best whisky shops in Scotland), fortunately the small local shops up in that area have good whisky selections so I did find some for about £45. A friend of mine was trying to get some a little while ago and the cheapest place he could get it was whiskysite.nl , those UK retailers who still had stock had jacked up the price accordingly. Cheapest I can find it for online in the UK is £80, if you are still seeing them for €60 - that's a good price right now. EDIT - Glendronach was closed between 1996 & 2002, and AFAIK all the bottlings currently available aged from 12 upwards (excluding Single Cask releases) are from 1996 & before stock. So the 18y/o 'Allardice' & current 12 y/o 'Original' will almost certainly disappear sooner rather than later as well. biglads fucked around with this message at 20:27 on Nov 24, 2015 |
