The Wizard is currently available, meaning I now have to force myself to finish Julie and Jack. I've been watching it a bit at a time for like two weeks and I still have about 45 minutes left. This movie is torture.

Bought The Wizard last night... I had not seen the movie in quite some time, and I completely forgot about the dead twin plotline. I had wanted to watch a double feature with Super Mario Bris, but I was too tired.

Last Total Riff Off was okay, not great, but okay. Truthfully it's more the fault of the program itself, being awful and uninteresting. I mean say what you want up shows like Monsterquest or In Search Of, at least those had cool recreations and not just swiss chese editing and the guy talking to himself and doing stuff that was obviously silly in relation to a camera crew being next to him. That said I learned that Sloths are pretty drat cool.

Upon watching The Wizard for the first time in... what, 20 years? I found it to be not quite as bad a movie as I was expecting, albeit a lot creepier regarding the sexualization of children. As bad as the part where the female lead brags about her dancer legs is, I think the worst scene was when they had some preteen in a full-on pantsless cocktail waitress getup selling bubblegum in the video game casino and Fred Savage flashes his fat wad while buying some. Seems just a bit out of place in a movie that's primarily a coming-of-age road trip built around the idolization of Nintendo products. The whole film felt like they got financing from Nintendo to make a film, and gave a Vegas-style hustle script a quick rewrite. I think the film would have worked a lot better if they had done a better job of building tension during the game hustle parts: a pool hustle or poker hustle film would tie the character events and the table action much closer together, but I get the feeling the writers didn't know much about games. They were probably just handed a stack of gameplay videos and titles to namedrop, and couldn't be bothered to do any more legwork. I suppose I should just be glad the game sequences aren't even more nonsensical then they are, although for the life of me I can't figure out how warping to world 4 in SMB3 helps get you more points. In regards to the MST3k reboot, I'm not super enthusiastic about it but I am looking forward to seeing what Joel can give us; Felicia Day might be an odd choice for the new Mad but I'm more than willing to see what she brings to the table. I think it's good that there's more than one metacommentary based humor series out there, and while Rifftrax will probably always be my first love I do miss the host segments and other contextual stuff.

Felicia Day is playing a mad which means she's in each episode for almost no time at all and all the original mad sketches were goofy as poo poo to begin with which is right up her alley. Avoiding the show because of her is super dumb. MST3K lives or dies by the writing of the riffs. The end. Even if you don't like Jonah (I've never heard of him before this but I guess he's done a lot of stuff?) you're only going to see his shadowy visage in the bottom right while scripted riffs come out of his mouth. The actors are literally the least important thing about MST3K.

Honestly I feel like the biggest problem I'm going to have with this is getting used to completely new voices after ~25 years of Joel, Mike, Trace, Kevin, and Bill.
|
# ? Nov 24, 2015 17:42 |
|
Servo will be the hardest. Kevin was Servo for nearly the entire run of the show minus the public access season. Crow will be easy for me since Bill took over for Trace and logged significant time there and we have a host change precedent. Servo though...yeah that will be tough because of the personality Kevin gave him. Edit: As I mentioned before, as well, the writing is really the key for me and my only real thing I'm cautious about. Mike was the head writer for essentially the entire run of the show on cable and he's made it clear that while he wishes MST3K well, it isn't "his show". Rifftrax is. So without him heading the writers room I'm curious to see how it turns out. ComposerGuy fucked around with this message at 18:47 on Nov 24, 2015 |

As weird as it is to say this, I wouldn't mind if their designs changed at least. Mind you Crow has always been Crow, he's just gotten better looking over the years. Tom Servo though, he's changed dramatically from the early days. I'd like to see their design continue to evolve.
|
# ? Nov 24, 2015 18:51 |
|
I'm surprised they didn't at least tweak the design of the bots just because some of the parts are hard to find now. I know they were able to recreate a lot of the stuff using casts and vacuforming but I understand they still rely on using the actual Tupperware Floralier planters for Crow's body.
