Realtalk, just give them two characters. Or maybe three! Make it The Fellowship Player vs. The Overlord Player.

Just ran my first game of Fellowship and it was a blast. I only had a couple of people but it went well. Just remember the [i]pay a price[\i] to attack the Overlord rule, and to go on the offense with the monsters.

My Overlord, the Dread Count Tarantula, got grenaded, cut up by a necrotic sword and staked on a rhino-dinosaur horn, barely escaping with his unlife only minutes after his assassin got blasted after jumping out of a cake. I had to scramble up some traitors not getting the message and the Dwarf Princess got caught in a death-trap, which went a lot cooler but the Dwarf didn't listen to the Igor's offer for cyborging. The Harbinger found a cursed book that gave him a new creepy tattoo. They saved everyone else from the guard spider with surprise Harbinger diplomacy, and made a deal with it to go to a jungle, and it promised revenge on it if there was less food. They got to keep the castle as repayment from the human ambassador, and the dwarf king pledged any amount of soldiers to fight Tarantula, should he return. This all happened in about an hour, although they went so well they skipped the bitching carriage chase I planned. I enjoyed the system but ran it poorly. You need to be on the offense with your minions, since it's easy to finish them as a player. Hopefully I can do a longer session with more players next time.

Things like this make me wish Kickstarter had late-backer support. There are easily 20 -30 projects I've missed because I'm never in the right place at the right time. My fault really, for disappearing from the internet exactly 30 days at a time.

If you ever have a second run, or do later backer, please let me know, I'm really excited for this.

Quick errata for The Squire:

I've also entirely removed their "you also get a Gear option from Your People" from their Gear, because they aren't anybody's people anymore so that doesn't make sense. And they don't really need it either - that option was mostly a stopgap because the Squire had some fairly boring Gear for a long time, but I don't think that's true anymore in the current draft and hasn't been true for a long while. I mean it isn't as exciting as the Dwarf or Orc gear, but the Squire also isn't a playbook about having stuff to succeed. It's what's in your heart that matters more to the Squire.

Thank you for this errata, because my newest player just picked the Squire (and the question of what People to pick from came up). I recalled seeing this post and went back to check on it. Anyway, that new Eager Apprentice move should be fun for him to play with.

EDIT: Also, I'm curious who that character is in your avatar.

It is a redesign of the Touhou character Kyouko Kasodani, and the redesign is from the touhou fangame Desire Driven. It is quite good and she is quite cute.

For a minor update, to make this post on topic, I've been pretty slow on working on the book recently due to the holidays, but I should have a new version of the book up in January, with that errata and some other new stuff. Also I've got a sketch for the Halflings painting that I am quite happy with:

If all goes well I'll have a full color version to show off for the December kickstarter update.

There's only one thing in the mountains that leaves a track like this. The creature of legend that roams the Timberline. My people named him Sasquatch. You call him... Bigfoot.
So one of the possible halfling cultures is "The near future, as envisioned by comic book writers from the 1980s?" sold. Well, more sold.

Funny you should ask, because I was just in the middle of writing up an update for the kickstarter when you posted that! So check that out. I posted a bunch of new Threats and a new Set Piece, along with the Halflings painting, which is quite good IMO.

It will be available in both hardcover and softcover, a month or two after being available in PDF. The Softcover version will be $25 and the hardcover will run you $50.

The main reason for the delay between PDF and print is that printing it requires a few more steps and uploading it in PDF form is one of the first steps involved, so it costs nothing to also put it up for sale in PDF form at that time.

Thanks for writing the when to use Basic Moves section, it's really helpful. One thing I didn't think of before, though:

If you try to reason with a person who is acting as a threat, what is the difference between Talking Sense and Finishing Them with Wisdom? I suppose Finishing Them can make them not a threat permanently, but I that might not always come up. Talking Sense can also be done without an advantage, but again, I'm not sure where the differences will come up.

Yet where is that woman now? Tell me, in what heave does she reside? None of them. Because no God bothered to listen or care. If that is what you think it means to be a God, then you and all your teachings are welcome to do as that poor women did. And vanish from these realms forever.
I really like what you did with this iteration, but I just have one complaint on the player game handout. I feel that the font on Finish Them might be a little too small. I haven't printed out to check, but it looks like it would be hard to read.

Talking Sense is for when you want to get them to do something for you this one time. You'll usually Talk Sense against an enemy when you want to talk them down from combat, convince them that something else is more important right now, or you just want to cut a deal. Talking Sense is that moment where you go "Whoa whoa, hold up, let's talk about this."

You Finish Them with Wisdom when you don't want them to do anything in particular, you just want them to stop hurting you. There is some overlap with Talking Sense to talk them down, but you can't Finish Them without some kind of advantage, which Talking Sense could buy you. Generally, trying to "kill em with kindness" is a long process, especially if they were trying to hurt you. You can't really do it unless you're in a position to, which is probably harder to engineer than most other kinds of Finish Them rolls.

An example of when you'd straight roll to Finish Them is if a wolf was biting on your arm, and your response is to go "shh, shhh" and start petting them, calming them down, and then you roll to Finish Them with Wisdom to de-escalate the fight. You can't (usually) Talk Sense with a wild creature, so in that case cutting straight to Finishing Them is reasonable.

For trying to Finish Them against someone who actively hates you or wants to hurt you, you'd probably have to do it by like, treating their wounds while they were dying or saving them from some kind of trauma. Something big and decisive to get them to maybe rethink what they're doing. It's a bit harder to engineer but probably worth it for the chance to gain an ally, and the Squire definitely has the best odds of doing it thanks to their Fast Friends ability.

Yeah I'm a bit worried about that too. I'll probably need to re-do the formatting on that print out and put it onto two brochures and not one. I have plans for similar reasons to make the Overlord playbook 6 pages.

Just a clarifying question. Are the Heir and the Orc intended to pick two or three Custom Moves? The draft PDF says two for the Heir, while the playbooks say three. They both say three for the Orc.

gnome7

The orc is definitely intended to pick 3, because one of their core moves does basically nothing. The heir is supposed to pick 2 - they used to pick three, but after improving Yes, My Liege into a very strong move, they only pick 2 now. I will need to fix that on the playbooks.

Come with me
if you want to live.
So, I tried expanding the Overlord's Advance Your Plans mechanic a little. I felt like I was leading my players on too much by telling them "the Overlord's next plan is here," and I wanted to have them make hard decisions about where to go next. I added a little bit of Splendor and Pandemic to the original, used the result in a few games and I like how its turning out so far.

When you advance your plans choose either three different options or the same one twice. (Multiple new Conquest Tracks count as different options.)
* Create a new Conquest Track in a community where your forces are not in position. The Conquest Track starts at Advance Forces. Tell us whether your intent is heedless destruction, seizing a new Source of Power, or completing a master plan.
* Move an existing Conquest Track at Advance Forces to Full Scale Attack.
* Move an existing Conquest Track at Full Scale Attack to Broken Defenses.
* Complete an existing Conquest Track at Broken Defenses. Your goal is now achieved.
After making your choices, you may tell the Fellowship about an unusual event occuring that has nothing to do with your plans.

This way, the Fellowship has at least two, and more likely four places to focus on, and only one place they can physically be. They have more time to get to those places, but the Overlord can choose to accelerate plans and have the same speed as before. The additional event came about to solidify that other dangerous or interesting events might be happening in the world that aren't relating directly to the Overlord.

I noticed the Overlord's plans were a bit lacking after some more poking with them, too, and they've been re-written a bit for the next draft already. I went about it slightly differently but our end results were pretty similar!

The Overlord is actually getting a LOT of cleaning up in the next draft, so look forward to that! They'll function mostly the same, but I think the new way I've divided their moves up should make things a lot clearer. They've also got a couple new tools, and the Fellowship also has a new way to pull one over on the Overlord. I'm excited to put this out there.

I wrote this move for a game I am running for the overlord:

So hard to find good help these days: when you take this move, the next time one of your generals would be taken out, change their stats to a new kind of threat and give them one more move:

Vengeance is mine: this general has it out for a specific character. Whenever this threat can target that character, it does.

Quick bit of feedback on the latest draft which you may or may not already know:

The Ringbearer font isn't embedded, so all the titles on my copy are displaying in some wacky sans serif replacement.

At least, I think that's what's happening. The titles are displaying improperly and Ringbearer's not embedded, but the causal link is something I'm assuming.

Sudden and possibly bad idea for a variant overlord now: The Demiurge. For when the Overlord pretends to be the good guy and patron of the party. With moves like "Set up a false idol" that introduces a fake overlord for them to oppose, setpieces like "The obligatory corrupt Fantasy Catholics" etc.

Because the game's like 2/3rds of the way to being a JRPG anyway, and eventually, you do have to punch God in one of those.
