I am a huge fan of tough as nails AI, and really angry about bad AI, which is one of the reasons I can't bring myself to play combat mission games anymore.

I'll check out case blue while secretly hoping the grognard bug doesn't bite me again.

e: vvv my experience is admittedly a bit limited with wargames but I think Commander TGW also had a really good implementation of airplanes and artillery just for the fact that they were incredibly simple in function and use and I wish more groggy games would adopt that sort of philosophy. Just click on something and say "DO AIR OPERATIONS ON THIS TILE", that's the good poo poo. Most of the really fun implementations have abstracted it to this level.

DC: Case Blue is really good as a kind of mid-complexity strategy games. Fun scenarios which don't last too long but still with a fair amount of complexity. AI's tough as nails too (if that's your thing).

I will say I think DC:Barbarossa has a lot more fun operational gameplay than the older ones by taking out artillery and planes to have to control. They really pared the thing down to the essentials.

I actually quite like the regimental scale of the first two DCs because the divisional co-ordination bonus you get is a nice incentive to keep your forces well ordered even as you are trying to throw them as fast as they can go into breaches in the enemy line.

Obviously would not want that scale for Barbarossa.

I'm not saying it's a bad feature - I agree with you in fact. But it does undeniably create an extra layer of complexity, and quite a significant one at that.

Anyone thinking of getting into DC should get WtP. The case white into case yellow is great for learning the systems. Case blue has like a few really small campaigns and then the monster titular campaign which I personally found very overwhelming at the regimental scale. Invading Poland is much easier to get your head around than pushing for the Volga on a timetable.

Whoops, I've played Warsaw to Paris not Case Blue. Got confused between the colouring systems. So for all my previous comments then assume that I guess, although I imagine Case Blue is pretty good also seeing as it's built on the same engine.

Case blue is basically the same game just in 1942 with some tweaks and improvements, nowadays I enjoy it a lot more than WtP. I just found it harder to learn (I got both at the same time) due to the scale of the action compared to invading France or Poland.

Thumbs up I agree

I think the 39-40 campaigns are just more interesting and less tedious on the regimental scale.

Don't you think you should put more thought into your battleplan?!

Pike and Shot: Campaigns is still only 13% off, I was hoping that was an error and would be changed. Its such an odd discount percentage. 10%, sure, 16% (1/6th) maybe, but 13%?

Is Graviteam Tactics any good? It's 80% off and I've had an eye on it. Is it anything at all like the Combat Mission games? It sorta looks a bit like it.

How obtuse/opaque/incomprehensible is it? :)

Just grabbed WtP and case blue. Wish me luck. DCB looks pretty cool but I don't want to drop 100 bux on it. And also not on steam. So hoping to learn how to play and snag it later maybe?

IIRC opinions are mixed here on Graviteam. Personally I'm in the "don't" or "try to find a demo first" camp because holy poo poo is the interface maddeningly terrible.

Also if you do get it and are looking at the modern campaigns, just look at the Angola and Iran ones. The China border conflict one is pretty bad and unbalanced.

Personally, found Graviteam disappointing due to AI glitches and the aforementioned atrocious UI. Worst I've personally seen in a game.

I've never played single player before, is it normal that the AI starts with basically perfect forts on all fronts or is this a higher difficulty thing?

Steam currently doesn't have a "Grognard" tag for all these games. I've taken it upon myself to start tagging these games with that for easier organization/searching. If enough of us do it it should show up as a legit tag. Just sayin'.

If you really liked the first one but thought it'd be great to have New Mexico territory on the map or that the unit building should be more like in RoP, yes.

Otherwise, no. It's the same goddamn game.

Instead of the trickle of forts, the AI gets all its forts at once. It's the same for garrisons. I know garrisons given out this way are randomized.

Looks like you traded 2 carriers for 3? Either way his bomber force was mauled with what looked like 0% allocation to escort.

50% off Panzer Corps (never played any of these games, how are they?)\

It's grog-lite turn-based strategy. Personally, I really like it (enough to do an LP of it, anyways) and it has a grand campaign that spans the entire war as Germany.

There's an Africa campaign for the Germans/Italians and an Allied campaign that merges UK/USA/Minors. And recently they released Operation Sealion which is interesting as well.

At 50% off (including DLCs), I'd say its a steal.

If Order of Battle: Pacific is on sale, it is very similar. It reworks the supply mechanic in a way that I think is fantastic, especially compared to Panzer Corps.

Sadly, its a little short on content and I really hope the devs try to expand it with a/some campaigns that see the same sort of length as Panzer Corps
