Thats true, but the berserk soundtrack just nails the atmosphere of berserk. I cant imagine scenes without one of suzumu's song playing in background.

Nah, it's just that the only thing that'll ever be adapted is the Golden Age arc. Reliving that tragedy over and over again.

A lot of people assumed that but apparently they either never had plans to go beyond the Golden Age, or the movies didn't do well enough to justify it.

The thing is that the Golden Age arc is very self-contained and the most well-known part of Berserk because of the anime. The fact that it ends incredibly bleak notwithstanding, if they start doing more, they have to keep going and there isn't really another good stopping point.

They weren't very good, the CG was especially awful and it wasn't until the third one that it started to pick up and not look really, really bad. I don't think they did all that well.

Is the Golden Age supposed to be based on Hundred Years' War era Europe? It seems like it, given the heavy use of mercenaries and constant background of warring going on as well as the political intrigue by the nobility.

Yeah probably. Miura takes a lot of inspiration from European history, as well as fantasy literature which itself takes a lot from European history.

My understanding about the Berserk movies is that cgi/anime movies bring in dogshit profits in Japan and aren't worth making long-term franchises. Apparently studio ghibli said something of the sort as well about their animated movies.

Hell, IIRC, anime in general barely breaks even most of the time in Japan.

Pretty much every traditional cartoon ever made by anyone not named Walt Disney has made money on merchandising or not at all. Hence the insanely cost-cutting way in which anime are made and all the low wages/outsourcing/ugly rear end CG. You can do it like that, or else sell Evangelion dinner sets for 10000 yen basically.

They alternated between really good and really poo poo at other parts. The Zodd fight looked horrible because of the CGI Zodd. The Eclipse sequence was really really well done.

Honestly the Movies just made me remember how awesome Casca was. Her move against Adon at Doldrey was very well animated and the fight against Silat also was very smooth. I liked the tv show a lot but it totally shafts Casca, outside of her jobbing against Guts she hardly showcases her fighting abilities. The movies make sure you remember that even if she isn't on Griffith and Guts level she is still a very very formidable fighter.

I liked the movies.

Sure, they cut so much of the story out that some scenes lose most of their meaning because the context is gone, but otherwise they're gorgeous movies with great pacing that highlight some of the best moments in Berserk through the lens of a film, rather than being a direct translation from print to screen of the manga like the old anime tried to be. (and failed cause it was bad)

Really disappointed they haven't made more. Even just the Black Swordsmen arc would have been fine, a one-off movie to actually show what the rest of the series is like.

Pewdiepie posted:

If you've waited eight drat years for them to get off the loving boat, you can wait eight loving days to read it in English.
