I found some "woods" porno (really side-of-the-road porno) when I was a kid and brought it home and hid it in my bureau. I found ants crawling all over the drawer later and that's when I learned that you don't take found porno home.

Sorry to hark back to the Holocaust discussion but it's actually interesting seeing people say "nah, that couldn't happen to us". The thing that seperates the Holocaust from most other genocides is the fact that it took place in a first world Western country. Germany saw itself as pretty much the pinnacle of western civilization. And that was part of the reason people dismissed the idea that a mass genocide was even happening. Hell, many Jews during the beginning of Hitler's reign/rise to power never thought it would get as bad as it did because, come on, this is Germany here.
Now it is extremely doubtful that things will ever reach that stage again in western civilization but considering all the things Trump has been saying about Muslim Americans and Mexicans, it is kind of scary to see how history can repeat itself.

Say what you want about Hitler but the man had actual ideals. He really did hate the Jews and thought that the only way for Germany to prosper was to Manifest Destiny the gently caress out of the Russians. Trump on the other hand doesn't care about anything other than Trump. It's working but I don't think Trump gives two shits about anything he is saying as long as it makes idiots love him more.

That being said Hitler himself had basically no hand in actually orchestrating the genocide. Hitler was a very hands-off leader who preferred sleeping in, taking speed and watching movies to anything resembling actual administrative work. Instead he'd lay a general ideological ground down and the people below him would try to do what they'd think Hitler would want them to do. Most of the dirty work was done by bureaucrats who were "only following orders" of people who were working on some vague idea that this sort of thing is what Hitler would want them to do. I mean he signed off on everything but he wasn't nearly smart or competent enough to put something as nightmarishly complex and calculated as the holocaust into action.

I went to an art exhibit in Tokyo called Shunga, featuring erotic art from around the Edo period. Intricately detailed scrolls and woodblock, explicit, fully fleshed out as it were, and like 95% of it was your usual Lovers In The Garden type of thing. But there were a few bizarre outliers - one was from the 1500's, and portrayed two women using a wooden double-ender on each other while some guy outside the room was jacking it. Another from the late 1800's had a very hosed-up looking ghost woman riding a guy and draining his life out of him. And another from the late 1800's was a group of man-sized penises lounging around a temple in the woods, but the woods consisted of vaginas. I don't think I can describe that more accurately.

I guess what I'm saying is don't go out into the woods in Japan.

Only really with regards to military to stuff. On all other matters he basically gave no shits. His cabinet didn't even have a single meeting after 1938 and before that Hitler himself almost never showed up to meetings.

His usual way of doing things would be to tell one of his nearest subordinates his ideas and that subordinate, usually Bormann, would pass along the general gist of what Hitler wanted to be done. He was also quite fond of creating conflict by having their goals overlap, in some extreme cases even having entirely new government agencies created in direct competition with existing ones. The idea was that this would make everyone work harder and the strongest people with the best ideas would always come out on top. In reality this just lead to a fragmented government with tons of tiny little factions that were all trying to gently caress each other over to impress daddy.

Stalin on the other hand was a complete bureaucrat and extremely into micro-managment and would often stay up until the morning pouring over documents to make sure he was always on top of the situation and always knew as much as possible.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surafend_affair

The Surafend Affair, in which a group of New Zealanders (and probably also Australians) massacred the inhabitants of an Arab village for fairly dubious reasons.

quote:

The village of Surafend (also known as Sarafand) was located nearby to the camps of the three brigades of the ANZAC Mounted Division: the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, and the Australian 1st and 2nd Light Horse Brigades. The proximity of the village, coupled with a perceived general British Army acceptance and dismissal of petty crime by the local Arabs, meant that thefts and even murders took place regularly with little to no redress from the Imperial forces. The reluctance of the British to punish or avenge such crimes led to a build-up of resentment among the division towards both the native Arabs and British General Headquarters.[3]

quote:

In December 1918, a New Zealand soldier, 65779 Trooper Leslie Lowry, was woken from his sleep by an Arab man attempting to steal his bag which he was using as a pillow. The soldier pursued the thief and called for assistance from the picket guards on the camp's horselines. As he caught up, the thief turned and shot him with a revolver. Lowry was found lying in the sand, bleeding from a bullet wound to the chest. He died just as a doctor arrived, having said nothing. The camp was roused, and a group of New Zealand soldiers followed the footprints of the thief, which ended about a hundred yards before the village of Surafend.[1] Soldiers set up a cordon around the village, and ordered the sheikhs of the village to surrender the murderer, but they were evasive and denied any knowledge of the incident and its perpetrator. In addition, the death was brought to the attention of the staff of the division the following day, but by nightfall there had been no response on what action, if any, should be taken.[3] According to the police report, there was no evidence linking anyone from the village to the murder. The report states:

At 0930 on the 10th December 1918 the Police commenced to search the Village and found no trace whatsoever of the culprit, or even any other individual suspected of the crime. The only material clue was that of a Native Cap (similar to headgear worn by Bedouins) which was picked up by a mate of the deceased, and handed to me by Captain Cobb. This was found on the scene where the Soldier was shot and killed.[1]

The following day, the men of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles prepared for what was to take place that night. Early in the evening, around two hundred soldiers entered the village, expelling the women and children.[2] Armed with heavy sticks and bayonets, the soldiers then set upon the remaining villagers whilst also burning the houses.[3] Somewhere upwards of about 40 people may have been killed in the attack on Surafend and the outlying Bedouin camp.[1] The casualty figures depend upon the testimony from the reporting authority. There is no certain figure and one account puts the figure at more than 100. There were also unknown numbers of injured villagers who were tended to by the field ambulance units.

It went completely unpunished too:

quote:

The massacre at Surafend was both visible and audible to the nearby division headquarters, and the division's Commander-in-Chief, General Sir Edmund Allenby, was ordered by General Headquarters to find and discipline those who took part in the killings, in particular those who led and organised the attack. The New Zealanders stood firm in solidarity and refused to name any individual soldiers responsible, and thus no-one could be definitively charged and disciplined for the massacre.[3]

General Allenby ordered the division to the square at headquarters, where he expressed his fury at their actions in no uncertain terms and employed unexpectedly strong language, including calling them "cowards and murderers".[2][4] According to Gullett's Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918, the division was fully expecting harsh military discipline for the massacre, and would have accepted this without resentment; however, Allenby's abusive outburst, although leaving them unpunished, fuelled a great amount of resentment and bitterness that their commanding officer would speak of the brigades in such a manner.

Hitler is to blame he is just not solely to blame and also far too stupid and incompetent to handle the actual logistics of industrial genocide. Something that was done by a bunch of dull bureaucrats. The holocaust was a result of ever increasing extremism and radicalization of not only the Nazi party but also German society as a whole. Everyone was to blame. Abba Kovner had some good ideas, the best one being his plan to kill six million Germans.

The US had a robust sterilization program in Puerto Rico, such that in the 70's many schools on the island were shut down because there were no children to fill them. There's several articles detailing this now, since it's come to light in the past 10 years or so, particularly after Rosie Perez attempted to secure funding for a documentary on the subject and was turned down.

How the gently caress does a grandfather clause get applied to something like safety or fire regulations? That's loving tragic. I always knew about this fire since I'm from Chicago, but this is the first time I ever bothered to read about it.

edit:
And while we're on Chicago disasters, the sinking of the USS Eastland was a pretty big deal. And ironically may not have happened if it had been grandfathered in for new safety regulations.

Oh, are we talking about fires? How about the 1911 Triangle Fire in NYC? At the time, it was the deadliest workplace fire in the city’s history - 146 garment workers burned to death in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory, the vast majority of which were women. Most of the victims were immigrants, and some were as young as 14 years old.

Old cloth scraps piled up, and while we don’t know exactly what caused the start of the fire (some believe it was just a dropped cigarette) it broke out on the eighth floor. There were no alarms in the building, and while the tenth floor was warned of the fire via a phone call, the employees on the ninth floor didn’t know about the fire until it was already on top of them. There were only a few exits - those that weren’t on fire were locked to prevent workers from escaping, so the higher-ups could search the women’s purses before they left each shift. The foreman who had the key escaped via another route without opening these locked doors.

Victims tried to use the one single fire escape, but due to the heat and weight it quickly collapsed (dropping 20 people almost 100 ft onto the pavement below!). The elevator operators stuck around and saved as many as they could, up until the elevators ceased functioning. While one elevator car buckled under the heat, the other car was put out of commission due to employees hurling themselves down the empty elevator shaft to escape the flames. The weight and impact of the burning corpses warped the elevator car beyond usage.

The fire department arrived very quickly, but their ladders were only long enough to reach the sixth floor. Furthermore, so many victims were hurling themselves from the building that it made it difficult for firefighters to approach the building. Life nets held by the firefighters were simply torn by the force of the falling bodies.

After a certain point, there was literally no escape. What anti-fire measures were there inside the building itself? A dozen red pails of water.

PBS has a really good documentary on the disaster. That also details a lot of the history and conditions of the factory and its workers leading up to the fire.
