The nebulous way that 4/5/6 kind of keep tying together is pretty cool too. I was surprised at that when I played through the DS versions earlier this year.

It was in Japan, yeah. People went absolutely crazy over Dragon Quest III and that twist blew them away at the time.

People were getting their copies stolen from them after buying it IIRC. Dragon Quest III had people going crazy to get it from what I recall. Hopefully the Japanese version didn't come with a walkthrough like the US version did because that spoiled the twist for me (also Nintendo Power's DQ3 article gave away the ending :psyduck:) and I'm sure going in to it unaware was mind blowing. Especially once you realized where you were and when.

Yeah, Nintendo Power spoiled it, but that made me want to play it more to see.

And thanks for the heads up on the sale. I picked up IV since that was the only one of the DQs I like (1-4) that I didn't have yet. Also grabbed Final Fantasy V & VI, since they were also on sale. Honestly I don't think I'll play these since the screenshots make them look horrible, but it's nice to have them anyway.

Ended up spending an hour grinding about in DQ2 before falling asleep. I know the start of the game takes a bit to get going, but I still like it overall.

Typically, they don't spoil end game level content in 80s/90s standard walkthrough japanese guidebooks. I think I have the DQ3 and 4 books somewhere, and they don't even list enemies in the final ~10% of the game or so if I remember correctly.

It's actually a bit strange, because other than that, japanese game guides tend to be ridiculously thorough compared to their western counterparts. The one I have for DQM2 3DS is about 1k pages, but it's more of a complete catalogue of the game than a walkthrough.

I have the original NES supplemental strategy guide for DQIV, and it "vagues out" towards the end, probably for this very reason. I played through DQIII not too terribly long ago, but I regrettably do not have the nice little book that came with the original cartridge release.

The Japanese strategy guides of the Famicom era (any maybe even into SFC) weren't allowed to go to the end.
Only the official Enix guides were allowed to do that.

Still playing DQMSL and some of the grind in it is really off-putting. The rare evo mat dungeon is up and takes 40 stamina to run. In a game where it's a 10 minute timer per stamina point and nearing rank 70 I still don't have that much max stamina.

Not that it matters, because apparently the dungeon is hard as gently caress even with a team of max leveled S rank units. I just want to evolve my Dragonlord... :sigh:

The dumb thing is that Nintendo Power already knew better. They did a FF1 strategy guide that stops right outside the door to Chaos's room and his battle image was just a silhouette rather than showing the inside of the room and spoiling that reveal. It just made no sense unless they figured spoiling the ending would get more people to play the game.

be level 45 or higher. take jessica with you for healing. run from him and dodge away. only attack when he is doing the suction move charging up and dodge at the last second. bring healstones. don't go near his escorts or bother attacking them. have full tension before he goes into his super mode so you can wail on him with your invincibility instead of getting one hit ko'd. repeat until he is dead.

it takes like 10 mins of doing this

I did Psaro basically as soon as he was available. Jessica, Yangus, Bianca, control Bianca. Build up tension with her persistent AOE and don't die. If you can make the accessory that ignores enemy shields beforehand, do it.

I'm waiting to see what the port will be like. I can get it cheaper on PS4 but would prefer it on PC, but if the port's garbage or somehow based on the Japan only PS3 version of Dragon Quest Heroes then I'll just pick it up for PS4.

Listen maaaaaaaaaan I did my part by playing it on PS4, thus ensuring the release of other DQ projects in the west such as 7 and 8 on 3DS next year.

I pre-ordered Heroes, so if Squeenix decides that the west actually likes DQ enough to start bringing more stuff over, you're all welcome. That was me.

And yes, I am very much looking forward to it. Wanted to play it tonight before seeing that the unlock is still several hours away.

I'm bizarre
I loved 8, but don't know if I can go to it again as I grinded that game out to max everything by fighting the final dragon series over and over. I would love a new game like 8 though as I thought that was pretty much DQ perfection.

7 had a good idea, but I thought it was a little shallow. Finding new areas with new towns and stuff was pretty cool, but they felt very wide and not so deep.

It's arguably one of their better ports, all things considered, given the use of PS4 assets and an average of 50-60 fps.

The complaints are mostly related to those who wanted completely unlocked fps and resolutions higher than 1080p.

Keyboard and mouse support isn't very good, admittedly, but it plays just fine with a controller.

The game itself is fun, which is what ultimately matters to me.

I figured people were complaining because it was a 720p 30fps port or something. Being sad that it's not supporting 1440 or 4k resolution and 120/144 fps settings is just silly.

Resolution being locked at all is basically inexcusable. That was the whole point of DSFix. The game ran fine at 4K. A single individual had the software to make it happen on day one. A game that outputs 16:9 NOT supporting 4K (another 16:9 reoslution) is silly, not the people who would complain about it.

Framerate is at least OK, but can have all sorts of really strange things break when unlocked, and can be difficult to fix without breaking other things. This usually has to be accounted for from the start of development.

There's plenty of people complaining the game doesn't take advantage of their new 144Hz monitor they picked up during Black Friday. While I kind of agree with you about the resolution, most of the complains about the port are from complete babies.
