80,000 miles = new transmission.

I need to keep that in mind.

Are those the right wheels/tires for that? Looks... strange.

They might be deuce tires (9.00x20, or 38" diameter) but the stock tires are 11.00x20 (42" diameter) on those and are pretty much dwarfed by the wheel wells. You can put 46s on without any changes to the vehicle, and I know of people who have put 54s on with very few changes.

When I say "dwarfed" I mean it. I can stand between the back of the tire and the fender on mine just by sorta bending over the top of the tire and under the fender since I'm too tall to fit under the sloped part of the fender. You don't realize how big they are till you've worked on one. Those lug nuts are 1.5" hex and the fenders are made from like 14 gauge sheetmetal, the brake drums weigh ~80lb each and the turbo is the size of a basketball.

Why the hell would anyone ever put a 5.2 *into* something? I mean at least you can drop a 5.9 in to replace it easily enough, but wow. They would have been way better off with an 8.0 V10 or any Vortec engine.

What does "stage x" mean when ricers talk about these things? Is there an accepted standard way of grouping and classifying modifications, or is it just some Yu-Gi-Oh "with my stage 8 turbo, my car's power level will reach 35, far surpassing my rival's which is only at level 29!" bullshit

As far as I'm aware, 1 is bolt on mods that any idiot can do like air filters, remaps, induction kits and exhausts. 2 is turbo/super charging. 3 is the rest of the poo poo requiring specialist bits and works, digging into and changing engine internals, forged pistons and valves, engine surgery stuff, clutches for big power.

Not even that, actually. And 88h88 is wrong. In almost every specific car modding community, stage x refers to a specific set of modifications. What those mods are changes based on which car you're talking about, and often varies between mod package manufacturer. A Cobb Tuning Stage 1 Ford Fiesta ST package might be different than a SWR Stage 1 Ford Fiesta ST package.. For the Ford FiST, for example, "Stage 1" is air filter/intake and software tune; "Stage 2" is intake, intercooler, and tune. Compare that to an Evo X "Stage 2" which is intake, cat-back exhaust, downpipe, and tune.

I hate that terminology and the people that use it, by the by, because you already have to be in the scene to know what the gently caress that person's talking about on their specific car.

When you guys are buying something you want a PPI on, do you ask the owner to do it, or does it usually fall on you? I'm looking at flying to pick up something and don't want to be disappointed when I get there.

I would think it falls on you. There's mobile places that will drive out to the car to inspect it. Ace Inspectors is such a place in Atlanta for instance.

Even if a seller did claim to have done an inspection, I wouldn't trust them. I'd want it done by someone I knew, not the seller's brother-in-law meth addict who works in a chop shop.

PPI is covered by the buyer and even if the seller 'had one done' I'd get a second opinion and pay for the PPI. If it's a rust prone car or something you're very familiar with give the inspecting shop a specific list or offer them $10 per photo of everything the seller didn't disclose. Did that when I was E30 shopping and it was money well spent.

You'll need to work with the owner and the inspecting shop to get the car to/from the inspection of course. You could also fly up and take an extended test drive which includes an inspection if the seller is ok with it.

That's a huge red flag anyway IMO. I've had many sellers drop that one. More than once I've been told the timing belt was inspected. So your mechanical went to all the trouble of removing everything to get to the timing belt, but didn't change it after somehow determining it was "good"?

For run of the mill poo poo under 5k I never bother with an inspection, I just bring some jackstands and a floor jack.

Well that's kind of a bad example because you can pretty much inspect the timing belt by looking at it and poking it with a screwdriver, while replacement (done properly) entails also doing the tensioners, water pump, etc.

But I know what you mean.

Tough, I have a 70. Paid $400 for it. I wish I had bought this one instead just for the seats. If anyone can scout this one for me, $1600 is a bargain just for the parts. I would be good to offer a grand and have it trailerd here for another $500.

Ten large seems a lot for restoring something that does not appear to be eaten by rust and has a somewhat intact interior. You could probably get away with leaving the paint alone.

Elmnt80

I'll bet anything that there is rust around the rear window. There is a dude asking 21 grand for a 69 amx that needs some light rust repair around the rear window and some spots on the rear quarters along with a complete respray to fix the poo poo paint job on it now. The interior is immaculate looking, but the car overall just isn't worth it. Sadly AMXs, Rebel "The Machine"s and rare javelins are stupid expensive combined with lovely parts availability due to greybeards hoarding the bits for that "Investment" thats rusting into the ground in their backyard that they're totally gonna get around to doing here shortly. It makes me sad because AMC cars are so much coole than the comparable big 3 cars. :<

Edit: Disregard, I thought this was an AMX. Which makes the price even stupider.
