If you need a 75" TV now and the space calls for the 75", then do it. If you wait things will always be better/thinner/cheaper. I bring it up in the thread constantly but Cleveland Plasma may be worth a call/email on either TV to see if he has any deals. I don't know if he stocks the 910 though. Also, if you Best Buy takes Apple Pay people are using a Discover promo for new cards to take 10% off of an apple pay purchase and 10% end of year cash back for some pretty nice savings. Just another idea.

You'd be waiting a significant time for good 4K content to be appearing regularly. 4K's a funny thing. Many people are wowed by things like Netflix's 4K and see it as reason itself to pay the premium and get a 4K set, when really they could have bought the 1080p Blu-Ray box set and gotten a better fidelity product. I guess when most people's idea of 1080p is whatever bitrate YouTube streams at for HD, even a resolution bump makes a huge difference.

Vizio M60-C3 trip report: No major problems with this tv. Would recommend. The picture looks great, the onboard suite of apps is pretty decent, and even the lovely DVD-quality rips I'm streaming on it via plex look great due to the upscaling. Very happy. Minor quibbles, for those that care: - Box is huge, no way you're getting this home in a 4-door sedan. Truck or van or nothing. - As noted, the legs are on the ends of the unit, so you need a wide desk to accommodate it if you don't mount it on the wall. - Startup time from power on leaves something to be desired. I'd say a good ten-count before you get picture, and then another 20-count before any of the smart-apps are usable. Not laggy at all after that. - The support for antenna seems pretty lacking, compared with digital antenna converter boxes I've worked with. No way to rename channels, no way to use your online connection to pull up a program guide for the channels it recognizes.

I've had a Sony Bravia 32" since 2010 and lately I've been thinking of upgrading to something in the 40"-50" range. Any recommendations for decent TV's around $500 with those specs? I don't need any bells or whistles, since I use it for gaming and nothing else - I just want good picture/sound and the assurance that it won't spontaneously combust on me.

Really dumb basic question but I CANNOT find the answer to this: Do modern HDTV's (in the US) with digital ATSC tuners still posses the ability to tune/demodulate old analog NTSC signals like that might some from a VCR or RF Modulator?

Generally, yes you just need a converter to fit the antenna coaxial port. It's going to look like absolute garbage, however.

Finally got my 55" Sony x810c that I ordered on Black Friday. So far I've just been watching random 4K content on Netflix and it's stunning. Anyone know if there are like any settings I should mess with or is it pretty much good to go? Haven't tried any games on it yet. Only thing I'm really concerned with is not getting the soap opera effect.

I kind of want to use my christmas bonus on a new TV, although my 55" Panasonic Plasma from 2008 is still going strong. At that time it seemed like OLED would be very affordable very soon - it isn't five figures anymore but it's still a lot. I could probably spend 2000 or so bucks without feeling too idiotic - it looks like the only OLED in that price range is this curved 55" 1080p LG? http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-55EG9100-55-Inch-Curved/dp/B0148OZNKK/ref=sr_1_6?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1449546151&sr=1-6&keywords=55EG9600 Curved TVs seem weird to me but I guess there isn't a flat variant at that price point? Also am I a real knucklehead if I buy a 1080p TV now that 4K seems to be on the cusp of being the general standard? Should I wait another year? I use my TV in the living room, sit about 8 feet from it and it has a PC hooked up to it where I play at video games. Are OLEDs suitable for that kind of task as well as the Blu-Ray and HD sports watching that also happens?

4K is nowhere near being 'the general standard'. We're at least half a decade away from it being regularly on cable/broadcast, and sports is even further beyond that. The Blu-Ray specification for 4K was only outlined this year, and about a dozen movies total have been announced (you'll need a new player entirely to play the disc at native resolution). If what you consume is primarily off BR and sports, you're not going to see many gains going 4K. People who see large differences on 4K sets with things like Netflix stems from the additional bitrate these streams are encoded at, not the TV itself. The LG 55EG9100 is nothing short of a phenomenal TV, and I would not hesitate at all to recommend it as long as you're in a relatively dark room (i.e., sunlight isn't directly hitting the set or you're in a room full of floor-to-ceiling windows) and you're okay with 55". The wow-factor of infinite contrast ratio cannot be understated. There is some decent input lag, but nothing really impactful unless you happen to being playing twitch multiplayer shooters. On the bright side, motion blur is at a minimum thanks to the OLED panel. Don't really sweat the curve, it's barely noticeable on this set. The only other TVs I'd really recommend over this are the larger LG sets and the 4K variants, but as you can imagine, they're much more expensive.

Thanks for the concise reply, good to know 4K isn't as necessary as the marketing seems to imply. I do stream Netflix too but it's not like such a big part of my life that I need to drop an extra grand on it. However my living room DOES have like a lot of floor to ceiling windows and the TV is facing them, it's a first floor with a lot of ground cover outside though so it doesn't get too bright. Is this like a very sensitive thing that will make an OLED a straight up bad choice or is it just sub-optimal?

The 55" flat oled can be had I think for 2300 or so, if the curve bothers you that much. That being said, why ditch the plasma in the first place?

As to the soap opera effect on the Sony, I turned off all of the motion enhancers and the tv looks just fine watching movies and sports. E: my parents haven't even upgraded to BD yet. And their DTV reciever is probably 6-7 years old.

Yeah I may just wait after all. I just moved and now have room for a TV in my bedroom so I thought now would be a good time to upgrade, plus a friend of mine was crowing about how awesome his new LED TV is. I thought he meant OLED but it looks like not. The plasma is working fine though so replacing it would just be rampant consumerism.

Anyone have issues with CEC on the Vizio M? It'll turn on my receiver just fine, but a few seconds after it powers up it'll switch the receiver input to "TV" and I have to change the input on my TV from HDMI-5 to something else and back to get the receiver to go to the correct input. My Panasonic S60 never had this issue The receiver is a Pioneer VSX823-K

A friend of mine wants to get a new TV and since I normally know the most about this stuff I feel obligated to help, but I haven't kept up with TVs in a while. His max budget is $1500, but that's a random number and I'm not sure what the TV sweet spot is right now. Don't think it's going in a huge room, so the average 55" is probably fine. He plays console games and watches TV/porn. Any go to recommendations?

Hello beautiful people. I require a television. The viewing distance is about 8-10 ft., I would use it to play the Playstation or watch Netflix, I feel like I should get a 1080p set as I don't think either of those two applications make use of 4K really, and I don't want to spend the $$$ required to get an OLED. I could comfortably spend up to $8-900 but less is always better if there's a good set in that range! Thank you so much for any advice.

In May, I bought last year's 1080 KDL55W950B because it was ranked so highly on displaylag and I use it mainly as a PC gaming display. It says ~17ms and looks/plays crazy well with everything I've played on it (Shadow of Mordor, Fallout 4, Rocket League, Skyrim, Vermintide, Battlefront). I can't imagine another ~17ms would make that much of a difference, unless you're playing twitch shooters on it.

So I'm looking to buy a 43 inch or so TV for my parents this Christmas. They have an unfortunate cabinet they aren't willing to part with that holds their current TV and so I'm fairly constrained by a ~40.5 inch width, though the height isn't really of concern. Are there any standouts at this size? For all of the info out there on the premium, larger screen TVs, finding recommendations in that range hasn't been as easy. Their current one has awful vertical black streaks throughout so I don't really need 4k or much fancy, though I'm not opposed. Looking to spend in the $500 or so range, but that's flexible.

So I was looking at the http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/w800c Sony 50 inch w800c, ostensibly because of the whole android tv shebang (mostly so I can load Kodi instead of Plex, which doesn't seem to play videos from a WD MyCloud NAS). I'm told however that these models tend to reset a lot even if you don't use the android tv though. How true is that, and in any case, what may be a better option if I want to do what I just described?
