Obviously there's Cena, but it's very hard to quantify other cases. Until relatively recently, in most every company you could name, nothing was scripted anywhere close to as meticulously as it is for the current WWE roster. Besides, there were plenty of bad talkers who had to improv or work with bullet points. Like, throwing a name out here, Billy Gunn.

To me, the main difference is the length of time guys are expected to promo these days. Back in the old days when men were men and promos were ad-libbed, they only had to talk for a few minutes. Main eventers weren't expected to go out there and talk for 20 minutes straight about who knows what. Like the Hard Times promo isn't even 5 minutes long. If you took away scripts and told Roman to go out there to talk for 10 minutes he'd be just as terrible.
