I think Vees alone was a bad idea, the car rules but you need a whole group who know how to drive it and it is not a car you can learn in a 20 minute practice. Also there remains no club layout that has ever been good, I was taking that blind corner at under 20mph and the elevation change was still spinning the car.

How many goons were there though? I counted four of us in the game and a four car race isn't great if you have as wide a talent gap as we do

I'm not saying that we should do public again, that was a mess. I can't really talk, I pretty much constantly spun in turn 3 (mostly because I didn't realise that I had steering assist on for some reason for half the race, probably should set up my SCE install a bit, I normally use the beta) and had to do two stop/go penalties through the worlds dumbest pit lane because I cut the track (one was probably fair). I still finished eighth one place behind ohsh which shows how bad most of the field were!

e: i'm not going to be around next week but i'd recommend the opala or the marcas cars; they're a lot easier to drive and you can get some proper old fashioned touring car racing going - admittedly the latter are front drive and that might put some people off. Full Velo Citta is cool: although I'm partial to the historic tracks in the game, especially old interlagos

I think it was 5 of us in there. Full Velo Citta in the Vees was a blast but with the 7 people in the room when we changed tracks it wouldn't have been much of a race. Then we got up to 15 once we changed to the Club track and everything went south.

I'm interested in getting a modest wheel-and-pedal setup. There are a pair of Logitech products in the OP that I've looked up and they both appear economical, but they're PS3 peripherals. As luck has it, I already favor the PS3 controller and have it configured for my PC using the SCP driver/Ximput wrapper. Will that be sufficient for getting the Logitech wheels operating, or is there an alternate technique that I don't know? Or do many racing sims already incorporate compatibility with those controllers specifically? Or am I just dumb and haven't noticed that they already have native PC support?

Every major wheel on the market has PC support, because they connect through USB.

Dirt oval people, if I want to try a bunch of dirt oval stuff should I look more at rFactor or NR2k3 stuff? I tried the Whelen dirt modifieds in NR earlier and found them a crapload of fun so I want to try more of that stuff.

After much practice to get used to my new wheel and adjusting AI difficulty to be appropriate, I finally dove into my first championship in SCE. Pretty intense and fun (managed to hold it together for the full 25 minute race with only a minor off-track). Little disappointed Blue flags don't seem to work for AI though (AI had issues, pitted, and came back onto track in front of me, the race leader, and didn't just let me by).

I'd be down to join in future SCE online stuff if it's at a suiting time now that I'm confident I can handle not spinning every few laps like I was during my practicing.

Speaking of the OP list: you should probably add the Thrustmaster T150 that slips in just below $200. I decided for it over the G27 (similar price with holiday sales) because I figured I'd rather have a better wheel (going by the Inside Sim Racing review, it is much better in that department) than a clutch + shifter; initially, upgrade-wise it seemed better too since then I can just upgrade the pedals + get a shifter and not need to replace the wheel. I've got nothing to compare it to in terms of racing wheels, but it seems pretty solid and it's a huge perk when using it late (see: when others are sleeping) that the FFB is quiet whereas I've heard the G27 is quite loud.

You know where you are? You're in the suburbs, baby. You're gonna drive.

As loud as the G27 is, it is whisper-quiet compared to the DFGT or G25

From my experience all the gear driven wheels feel like poo poo compared to my T500. If the T150 is a cheaper version with perhaps a bit less FFB power or something but fundamentally the same technology then that compared to the Logitech wheels aren't even in the same league.

I have never had a gear drive wheel, but out of curiosity (and for future OP update): Wouldn't a gear-driven wheel be more direct than a belt-driven one, albeit weaker (no pulley) and a probably a bit notchy?

That's the main thing, it's super notchy when you're turning the wheel slowly. With larger and faster inputs its much less noticable but for oval racing especially you really feel the gear notches so the wheel doesn't turn as smoothly.

Speaking of gear driven wheels, the G920 is on sale in the UK for £180, that's only £25 more than I paid for my G27.

I think the US is dumb for not using Celsius
I've heard it said that gear wheels provide better detailed feedback but belt wheels are smoother and maybe stronger. I've never used a gear wheel in a serious sim, so I don't know.

I upgraded from a G27 to a Thrustmaster TX. The TX wheel base is better in every way in every game and sim i've used it in.

That said the G27 is still a really good wheel, I just strongly prefer the belt driven.

1.4 update as well. Usual AI improvements, new reflection rendering, new sounds, optimisation for large grids, some shader tweaks, couple of physics tweaks as well. Seems to be a mostly graphical update though. They have said to only use the default post-processing filter though because the graphical tweaks have broken a lot of them.

Another new oval track for rFactor 2, this time Homestead Palm Springs. It's another 3rd party mod made official. Also none of the stock cars have a default setup for it so I had some fun seeing how high I could get the right side tire temps. The stock cars are really the major distinguishing feature of rF2 with all the ovals they've added and the tire model and dynamic track really fit them well. Just a shame the AI is so drat slow and the spotter sucks.

Can't seem to find a good used G27 locally (mine recently lost FFB) so I'm thinking about a T300RS. Problem is that my pedals (with GT Eye springs) and shifter (I want to retain an H shifter) are probably better from my G27 than the thrustmaster stuff. Only place I can find the USB adapters to use the G27 hardware with a different wheel comes from the UK and is $68. Seems a bit pricey when that money could be spent on better stuff.

What do you guys suggest I do? G27s come up from time to time for around $200 but I'm striking out so far. Going with a T300 sounds like a bit more money but a better wheel, and the added problem with the peripherals.

I pretty much only play iracing at this point but want to try out SCE as well.

If all you've done to your G27 pedals is the spring mod then you're probably gonna be find just ditching them and getting the T3PA pedals with the T300 if you can afford it, or just get the integral set which includes both. Also the TH8A shifter is way better than the G27 shifter just for having 8 positions.

Speaking of SCE, there's news coming. And trucks. Big trucks.

They're hanging mounted, but otherwise yes they're nothing special. They're not load cell pedals, right?

Edit: the more I look into this, the more I think I should just hold out for another G27. poo poo gets expensive all the sudden replacing everything.

I think you can leave your g27 wheel connected (but unpowered) and use it as an oversized adapter for the pedals and shifter. If you were going to get rid of it entirely then you could take it apart to reduce the bulk a bit.

I'm really happy with my t300rs, would definitely recommend the upgrade.

Interesting thing I found that wasn't mentioned in the AC 1.4 update, they've redone the tag system to move more cars into classes that should race well together. So there's now a historic touring class with the Alfa 155, BMW E30 DTM and a Mercedes which all race fairly evenly and a fair few more. This is something I've wanted out of that system for ages so I'm not constantly doing single make races. Though the small sports category is a little unbalanced since the extra agility of the Quattro and Abarth means once they get ahead of the pack they're just gone, and the Quattro will destroy the Abarth after that. Everything else is fairly even though.

Its improved a lot over the past year which helps, when I got AC I played for about 3-4 hours and really didn't like it. Then AI improvements and other stuff moved it into my regular rotation, largely because I can play it and not feel like I'm playing an old/underpowered game. Much as I love SCE and rFactor they are lacking in visuals, and I can't run Raceroom at high enough settings to get the same effect though it's certainly capable of it.

Assetto Corsa is 50% off ($25) on Steam right now. Maybe it'll flash deal lower during the Winter sale, but anybody who doesn't wanna wait for that possibility can get it reasonably cheap now.
