I haven't had insurance for over a year now. 300/month premiums are insane. "Affordable care" my rear end. That shits 1/4 of my monthly income. I'm going to get turbo hosed in April. :smith:

Well, one good thing to come out of this insurance talk is I just realized I forgot to sign up for something when I lost my job so I'm not covered right now. Whoops. Gives me something to do this week.

I'm celebrating new year's with my family at an Oregon beach cabin that we've rented for the last 26 years. We originally started renting it for NYE because nobody else wanted it, but it's become a great tradition. It's the cabin in the foreground with the A-frame section sticking out. The big rectangle one is a separate house but part of the property, and the owners live there. The weather is always a surprise, sometimes it's 40 and raining and there's just rocks for the beach, sometimes it's high 50's and sunny with beautiful sand and no wind.

For example, here's 2004, one of the least sandy years, and bitter cold:

And here's 2013, the best and warmest year we've ever had, with enough sand that we walked miles up and down the beach.

It's wonderful because it's just family, and incredibly relaxing. I'm going to be really sad when it eventually slides into the sea, which it most definitely will. (the floor is already at about a 2-3 degree angle).

Once in a while we get lucky with nature:

The funny part is I almost missed that, a few of us were walking up the beach after a few hours climbing around tide pools when my niece and daughter came down to find us and were like "did you guys even see that?" and we turned around to have that view hit us in the face. A camera doesn't even do it justice.

I think even with all the crap life throws at us it's this stuff that makes it worth it. Too bad they're so often short lived moments and we have to live in the poo poo the rest of the time.

I'm going through some medical stupidity, as well. I have a nerve problem in my feet caused by / exacerbated by cycling. It's been getting worse for a couple years. I finally went to an orthopedic foot/ankle place and it is the absolute definition of what is bad with 'Murican medicine. Huge, flashy place, lots of people to get you in and out. Doctor spent 5 minutes with me, gave me a "prescription" for orthotic inserts AT THE "STORE" THAT JUST HAPPENS TO BE ATTACHED TO THEIR OFFICE. The "store" is the exact same company, they are writing prescriptions and filling them themselves... no conflict of interest there!

On top of that, it was immediately xray, then MRI, then a quick diagnosis and they recommended surgery, or an option to do steroid injections. Just out of fiduciary responsibility (I've got good insurance so it really is academic), I asked for the cost of the two. You'd think that I asked the collective office to drop their skirts and bend over so I could test their twats to see which one I want to gently caress most. It's been two weeks and they still haven't been able to tell me HOW MUCH THEIR SERVICE COSTS.

Anyway, 'Murican medicine is as bad as the stereotype.

In other news, my cable company is jacking rates and I'm thinking of cutting the cord. I'd have to set up an OTA antenna or find a local stream of at least NBC, but man, from what I see, I can do just about everything with a Netflix subscription that I already have, then grab Hulu commercial free and Sling and I'd be set. Let's see how tough it'll be to deal with them to get my 30meg internet changed to 60 or 110meg...

I did exactly that. OTA is all digital and hi def/widescreen now so it's really no loss. The only time I've used it is to watch football if there's a big game on, or check the news for something. I've used the antenna maybe 5 times since I bought it in 2013. Everything else is netflix/amazon/rental/internet. My daughter has grown up commercial free for the most part.

Also what the gently caress is up with the human body. I slept from 4:30 AM to 4:30PM yesterday, got up for two hours, then fell asleep in my chair and woke up at midnight. I can't fall asleep when I want to, but gently caress Monday I guess.

Do it, I did shortly after buying my house and don't miss cable at all. Don't really need to up your internet either unless you really want to. I don't have an antenna and if I want to watch sports or something I'll go somewhere but I usually don't watch sports or anything local.

Anyone get to a point where they have no idea wtf they want to do with respect to vehicles? I'm constantly looking for new projects or cool cars to buy but don't have the time/space and really don't need anymore. I've bought a car or motorcycle for the past four years and almost made an offer on one this morning before I wondered why the hell I was even thinking about it. As it sits now the 928 needs to go (think I've found a buyer), the 320i needs a few more things then will be DD-able and the VW is boring but reliable as hell. The M's aren't going anywhere but could use a little love to get them up to 100%.

Yet I'm still looking at buying/building a race car as well as a more fun commuter. This time of year I just start thinking of projects or cars since I don't spend as much time outside then one thing leads to another and I'm flying somewhere to test drive something. I think I'm broken.

Maybe I should just look into racing the race bike or maybe karts if the local guy finishes his track.

I've been without cable for 3 years last month. I rarely miss it. Only real issue is sports (NBA for me), since the stupid leagues won't let you purchase their broadband packages unless you have cable. Dumb shits, if I had cable I wouldn't need their broadband package. So I just use Ballstreams, which is out of Europe and works pretty good. If the leagues ever dump their incestuous relationship with the cable providers and let me buy it direct from them I will, but until then, oh well.

The rep said on the way back from the alignment shop, the car threw a fault of the dsc system and the 'check engine' light. I think it's the engine's on reduced power light. I'm hoping all I have to do is re-calibrate the SZL-steering angle sensor and it'll clear up. The same way I did in school. "ELI the ICE man"

E (original variable name for voltage, now V) Leads I in an inductor (L)
I leads E (now V) in a capacitor (C)

For the equations just remember that capacitors integrate current to get voltage and inductors are the opposite, so they differentiate current to get voltage. How many farads or henries there are just change how much they do these things.

We cut the cord when we moved into our house. I got the fastest internet available, signed up for hulu and netflix and we already have amazon prime. We did the math and our total charge every month is 70ish vs paying 170 a month on just cable with DVR service. If we factor in prime, I think it ups it to 75-80 bucks?

We already had prime (seriously - as much poo poo as we order off amazon now we easily make up the charges from shipping) so we just bought 2 firestick's and use that for streaming. The only thing that sucks is the lack of sports on tv, we usually go out to a sports bar or what ever on the nights games are playing. I know we are spending a little more when we go out, but we were more than likely going to go out to dinner at some point in the week, so I figure its a wash in terms of cost.

Yep, two pins are pushed down completely flat against the plastic of the socket. I have no idea how I could have possibly done this, as the CPU is inserted with a plastic tool thing that holds it and won't let it go in anyway except flat and in the correct orientation, and these pins are not on the edge even, the only way I can see they could have been bent down like this is by sticking something very small and pointy in there and pushing on them.

Of course since I didn't notice this before installing the CPU, it's my fault and I get to eat it since they won't accept that I didn't do it. /sigh.. and I'm sick today as expected so missing the Christmas party at work. What a lovely day!

Plastic toothpick and some jeweler's glasses. You got this.

Was considering that, however...

Just got off the phone with a manager, they are taking it back after sending a replacement, and charging me a 15% 'restocking' fee. However, they issued the refund RMA for the full price, instead of the sale price I actually paid, so I'll be out slightly less than $5.00 thanks to them not issuing the return RMA for the correct price, so I'll just inspect this next one very carefully prior to installing anything.

It's entirely possible that I did somehow damage those pins, I just can't for the life of me figure out how I could have done it, given that they are not edge pins, and they are pushed so far down. :iiam:

Don't know about his, but I pay $54 per month for 50mb through Cox. I have to threaten to disconnect every year to keep it at that price, but hey, I don't really want to pay any more than that.

Me: Ok well type in websiteX where it says about :blank.
C: Well google just brings up the main company about websiteX, I need OUR websiteX!
Me: I know, type in the address bar websiteX where it says about :blank, please.
C: Look it's been websiteX for 3 years, today it's about :blank, I need to get to websiteX, I don't have time for this!
Me: Exactly - type in websiteX where it says about :blank.
C: This is getting nowhere I need websiteX!
Me: Did you type in websiteX where it says about :blank?
C: Yes and google just brings up information about websiteX!
Me: Why are you switching tabs to type in websiteX into a google search?
C: Well thats what you do when you want to get to websites!
Me: So if you wanted websiteA.com you go to google and type in website A.com?
C: Yes. (Senses that I now know something he doesn't.)
Me: What is your asset tag number so that I can remote to you?
C: 1234.
Me: Please accept the remote request.
C: Why couldn't you just do this before?
Me: Because it's easier to teach, but here we go. about :blank... type in W-E-B-S-I-T-E-X.
C: I've done that already and it just takes me to information about websiteX!
Me. Please type in W-E-B-S-I-T-E-X.
C: Fine but this is just going to take me to google!
Me: Hit enter please.
C: I've done that already and it just takes me to information about websiteX!
Me: Again - Hit enter please.
C: Oh... well how come it takes me to websiteX? Did you fix the server!?
Me: No. You are entering the address for the intranet site websiteX rather than going to a search engine to look up all the worlds information on the product websiteX
C: (Clearly doesn't understand and never will.)
Me: Will there be anything else I can help you with today?
C: No, you could have just done that for me right away.
Me: TRY to teach a man to fish... Have a nice day.

This guy is such a condescending prick about all of his other issues like he's the smartest guy in the room and he can't even get to an intranet page after 3 years of working here. A page he uses EVERY day because it's his f-n job. I hate anyone in the workforce that tries to skate by on not knowing how to use the very tool they do their drat job with every day. Doesn't matter which age group because I see a bunch of 20 somethings coping the same crap too. You'd fire a builder if he couldn't swing a hammer to save his life - why should a computer be any different if you are going to spend nearly 8 hours a day on it?

Jesus Christ dude, I don't even work in IT but put a trigger warning beforehand, seriously

You think that's bad? We had one of our technical writers submit a ticket asking how to create a hyperlink to a website in outlook.

I'm too loving lazy to call and do that but I really should, I'm paying something like $66 for that exact same service.
