iCloud backup was introduced with iOS 5, so an original iPad should be able to use it.

Yeah I'll be home for the full week after Christmas, so part of my gift for them is going to be getting everything set up before they I fly back home. Full restore (or as much as possible), setting up TouchID, getting all their apps back on and working the way they want as well as any new apps (apparently Pinterest doesn't install on their device?) installed. I've learned my lessons as the family "tech guy" over the years, no way I'm going to let them try & do it on their own, plus they're way too polite to call me if they run into any problems and like you said would be waiting on hold for weeks trying to get anything fixed.

You could also buy AppleCare on the device so if they have future issues they can walk into an Apple Store for support (for 2 years). Just an idea.

You can walk in for support without Apple care for free whenever, it'll just cost if you need to repair/replace.

Ok great, at least they "should" have some sort of backup in place. I'll get a definitive answer on Christmas .

They live in the middle of nowhere (nearest Apple store is several hours away) and would absolutely never take advantage of any in-store support re: software issues. Me setting everything up for them will be the biggest hurdle for them, after that they have very simple needs.

Best bet if they've used the old iPad for more than reading webpages and email (say they have game saves they want to continue working on) is to upgrade the old iPad's iOS install as much as possible and then do an iCloud backup. Once that's done, get them the new iPad, and do the restore. If your going to have both iPads around for a bit it's a safer way to go. If their needs are indeed simple then you don't even need to restore from a backup. Just make sure iCloud syncing is on for bookmarks, etc. and set it up as a new iPad.

AppleCare for iPads also extends the phone support past 90 days and enables some accidental damage help. It's handy for people not near an Apple Store as Apple will fedex you a shipping box and get most things turned around pretty quickly.

Yep, I'll have both iPads on hand; it's a Christmas present so both devices will be in the same place since they're visiting us and will have the iPad 1 on hand when they unwrap the Air; no worries about that. I understand AppleCare has more advantages, but it's not part of the budget and won't ever be, I've already discussed that with the other investing parties. As long as I have some sort of a plan to migrate their information from the old device to the new one, regardless of complexity, that's all I need.

Hey yall. Getting an Air 2 for Christmas, upgrading from an OG iPad. It had this really great case that covered the whole thing and had a strap in the back to let you hold it one-handed (which is incredibly useful for me because blah blah handicapped). It's basically, kind of like a book-case thing? Like, you open it up, and you slip the ipad in this little folded thing, and then on the bit that you open there's the little stand and the holding strap. I'm trying to find it online, but apparently the brand - Scosche -- has since changed their model. Any recommendations for an Air 2 cover with these vague and poorly worded features?

Sadly, despite it being free (at least for a device backup or two without photos), seamless, relatively reliable, and requiring nothing from users beyond turning it on, you'd be shocked how often people on this forum don't use iCloud backups and are upset when they have to start their phone/iPad from scratch and lost everything. Hopefully your grandparents weren't like them!

Use to see this daily working at the Genius Bar.

Also make sure they know the pin you set up for the iPad too, and emphasize that Touch ID won't work if they restart the iPad.

You could put some electrical tape over it. It'll still flip on and off through the tape if you push hard.

I was about to order a Pro via my mobile carrier, but they went out of stock in all 3 colours while I was trying to decide :saddowns:

Are many app developers updating their poo poo for it? I worry that because it's kind of a niche (and expensive) item, that only fairly specialised stuff will get updated and everything else will wind up looking something like an iPhone app on a regular iPad.

It's a bit hit or miss right now. A lot of apps scale well, but then that just makes the ones that don't look like Babby's First App.

Things like Omni group apps, MS apps (except Skype for Business which is a heap of poo poo anyway), Notability, Evernote are fine. For me the apps that are like unscratchable itches are:

Kindle - UI is not scaled, but the book rendering is OK since the fonts can be scaled in app.
Noteshelf - The author made it Pencil aware, but didn't scale the UI. Which is annoying, because it's the only non-suck note-taking app that will auto sync with Evernote.

Picked up my Pencil from Best Buy this afternoon. Still playing with it with the few apps that support it but it's rapidly growing on me. It's light and super precise. I have no ide how I lasted so long with a stupid thick rubber tip stylus. That said, PDF Expert is rustling my jimmies pretty drat hard. The pencil gets registered if you use the zoom function window but it won't work on the main / full editing mode.

Which is like 90% of what I will be using this dumb thing for.

Yeah, I've had some weirdness in PDF Expert as well. I can get handwritten notes to work in zoom mode, also but nothing outside of zoom. Can't create a signature in the sig tool either. Highlighting and the shape tool work fine.

I'm going to have to look for another annotation tool if I can't get it working.

Found the fix.

Go into settings on the main page. TURN OFF wrist protection. When the Pencil is paired, iOS does that automatically when the the tip is on the glass, so no need for it in any apps that are Pencil aware.

What can one do with an original iPad (not Air, like the OG iPad)? I mentioned earlier that we're gifting my grandparents an Air 2 and they've got an OG iPad in perfect condition that I'll probably end up in charge of recycling or whatever. Can I trade it in somewhere to get them cash for the App store or something, or if I kept it are there any neat tasks I could put it to use on (wireless monitor, stuff like that)?

The stores are still randomly getting random quantities of Pencils. So, it's not a great chance, but you can call your local store(s) or drop in and ask?

That's what I did the Friday after release and I got the last of 4 that had arrived at 3pm that day.

This is what three Apple stores in NYC told me as well. Random shipments at random times on random days of random quantities. They don't even know until a box of...something comes in and they open it.

I haven't pursued this yet because I'm still undecided on even getting a pro.

The Apple Pencil I ordered on November 15 just last night shifted to "Preparing for Shipment" and they had initially pushed my Smart Keyboard delivery out until next week until this morning when they put it in Preparing for Shipment" with faster 2-business-day shipping. So no, they're still fulfilling orders from November now and not overstating it. I'd expect that an order now probably won't really take 4-5 weeks since I suspect the bulk of the orders were from around launch time, but I wouldn't expect it next week if you order now.

Probably still a good idea to order one (before iPad Pros without accessories get opened on Christmas) and keep looking locally. You can always cancel the online order if you find one locally, or return it if you have bad timing/don't track the online status (love the Delivery Status app/widget for this).
