Nah, the whole "resort prison" thing is purely reserved for people that nobody wants to punish. Those are the guys I mentioned who actually have power to go with their money, like friendly fellow millionaires, politicians, and judges. Shkreli got rich quick without any of the connections needed to build it up, and in fact has a lot of powerful people who personally have a bone to pick with him. If he goes behind bars over this, it won't be comfortable.

From the information released this guy was doomed right from the start; his crimes are a pattern that's often seen among idiots with no ethics. He's more high profile than sleazy exec who embezzled money #64815, but there was no way that this wasn't going to crash down on him. It's not a matter of connections or stepping on the wrong toes or anything like that; it's that he's a thief with no ethics and no brains who thought he could keep running ahead the money. The fact that he's been a big mouthed rear end in a top hat just means that we get to really enjoy this one.

The whole Shkreli mainly goes to show that the whole idea of a bail system is hosed up. Someone gets to hang around at home instead of in jail just because theyre rich? like, how openly unfair to the poor can you guys make your "justice" system really after youve added that? It is loving ridiculous. The right-wing spanish president getting punched in the face yesterday.

Like so much else, it's a perfectly fine idea on paper. You're innocent until proven guilty, so we don't want to throw you in jail, but if you are guilty, you could take the opportunity to skip town, so we'll take a sizeable deposit as discouragement. Above posters have already detailed why it doesn't work in execution.

I'll be happy when my classmate fails. Last Friday was the date of my computer science course's final exam. Since it can be completed online, there was no class, and most students did it at home or in the library. On Saturday, I got a call from the guy who sits next to me in class. Let's call him Goofer. Goofer was in a panic because he forgot about the final exam (which is worth 30% of our grade). Fortunately, the professor is allowing him to take the exam over tomorrow. But that's not why I hope he fails. Goofer went on to mention that he'd never finished the two programming assignments, which were due in early October and November respectively. They each consisted of four different problems to be solved by writing a Java program. (For comp sci nerds: the problems were pretty simple, since this is a first-year class. Calculating the amount of paint needed for a certain sized room, or printing the first n powers of 2, stuff like that.) My school uses Canvas, and apparently the professor hadn't set a limit on the latest that the assignments could be submitted (whether the professor would even grade them at all is another story). A normal person might thank the gods above for this leniency, repent for their laziness, and work their hardest on completing the homework before the last day of the semester. But not Goofer! Instead, Goofer asked me if I would send him my raw code for both assignments, and he could "change a few things" to make it look like his own original work. He also asked if the "compiled code would be included." If you're even vaguely familiar with coding, you'll know from that statement that Goofer isn't. Even if Goofer had offered me some sort of incentive to risk failing the class and possibly even getting kicked out of school for aiding in plagiarism, it was obvious that he wouldn't be able to convincingly pass my code off as his own. I lied and told him I didn't have my work anymore. Today at noon, Goofer called me again. Apparently he only just realized that there's a project due midnight on Friday, despite the fact that it was announced a month ago! Of course, Goofer was absent on the day we discussed it in class. (For comp sci nerds: the problems on the final project include a program that counts the occurences of the largest in a series of numbers, and a program that uses the Luhn algorith to validate credit cards.) I made it clear that he had very little time left to complete the project, and that he would fail if he submitted it even a minute late. Goofer remarked that someoneone could simply send him their finished work, like that's no big deal. Goofer revealed that he hadn't made any progress on the homework, and that the only reason he'd passed the midterm was because he had done it in the library with two other students who actually studied and gave him the answers for everything. When I didn't selflessly offer to give him my code, Goofer said, "Well, I'll just read the assigned chapters and figure out how to do it." I'm genuinely curious about how he plans to accomplish learning an entire course and completing the final project in 36 hours. The sad thing is, if Goofer had even attempted to do the homework, he would have been better equipped to tackle the final project. Even better, he would have realized that his programming skills are too minimal to properly code the problems in the project, and he could have used that insight to get extra help from the professor or tutors. Goofer is so hosed. I'm just enjoying the schadenfreude.

The course consisted of a 75-minute lecture once a week and there were no in-class assignments or anything. Basically you had to self-teach by doing the problems in the book if you didn't come in already knowing the basics. I can see how that could gently caress up a lot of people who are used to the way high school is structured, but Goofer didn't even loving try.

It was kind of pointless since all the assignments were accessible online, but whatever. It doesn't bother me much since Goofer only texts/calls me when he fucks up, and I made it pretty obvious that I'm not interested in him romantically or podiatrically.
