I dressed up as Ray for Halloween a few years ago. I spent the entire party explaining to people what Achewood was, but I expected that (in fact, I had a bunch of my favorite one-off Ray strips printed out and handed one to anyone who asked about my costume)

Well, i was a grey cat with sunglasses, a necklace, and a thong. It was pretty clearly a costume, I had a good time, no one cares what you wear to a halloween party?

It's not like i was giving them out, i just had some examples handy for when people talked to me at length about my costume, which was happening a lot. Easier than showing them on my phone screen. It was just a way to make conversation, I definitely don't think anyone at the party was as hostile about it as you seem to be.
