...and today, we get to another long-sought after request with LUCKY AND WILD. It's pretty wacky, and fits snugly into the ever worsening continuity of our head canon.

This (as you might be able to tell) is our first attempt at doing a collaborative long-distance recording, which is why Keith in particular sounds odd. (Kyle has all the good mics and audio engineering know-how but he lives a thousand miles away from everyone because he is a reclusive misanthrope.) We'll try to iron out the bugs in this system so we can update more frequently (and beyond the point our current stockpile of videos is exhausted, mid-January or so at the current rate.) Technology as a way to command real life to gently caress itself. Human history in a nutshell.

Thanks for playing it, guys. I'm pretty sure the characters are based on Tango and Cash, the Stallone/Russell movie, considering that one of them looks like a businessman and the other looks like a layabout. It was a fun game though.

Also, there didn't seem to be too many issues with the sound or anything for me.

Alright, it's Monday and it's time for a new game. Why not a Data East game? I think someone even mentioned this one when we put up Edward Randy, but here is "Sly Spy."

I think at this point, it's safe to say that Data East has got to be my favorite Arcade game company. They don't seem to have a centralized theme, there games range from simple (Burger time) to bat-poo poo crazy (The CliffHanger: Edward Randy). With the exception of Sly Spy and our Ed Randy, none of the games seem to even have similar gameplay at all. We have at least two more Data East games currently recorded, and I'm sure we're going to be playing more in the future.

The funny thing is, we're not specifically looking out for Data East games, we're just looking at preview videos of games and picking what looks fun or weird as poo poo, and we discover as we're playing that they're Data East titles.

Wizard Fire is actually kind of an oddball in light of the other DE games we've seen; most of those seem to be 2d action games, where this one is a top-down dungeon crawler with big-rear end bosses. I do kind of wonder what kept DE out of the console and PC market, since they seemed to have a certain versatility about them.

And time for me once again to offer a few comments!

Gaiapolis (one of the games on my list) is the game that has a password system. When you get around to it, you might try just gaming over on the first dollar, making a note of the password, and (should you choose to put a second dollar in) using the password and seeing how it works.

Also! The reason Phantasy Star Online has sci-fi elements is that the series has always had sci-fi elements. It's more or less obvious in different games, but the various worlds are actually generation colony ships, something you discover at one point or another. It's a bit like the early Might & Magic games in that way.

Cool! We'll make a note of the password thing. Hopefully we can keep recording requests in the near future, but I sincerely think I need to get a better mic.

And re: Phantasy Star: Oh wow that's kind of cool. I never knew much about Phantasy Star since I literally only ever knew one guy who had PS IV, and we never got very far in it. (The early PS games were on Master System, right? I only knew one other guy who had one of those, and he mostly used it to absorb tobacco smell. ) But PSO was more or less my first proper exposure to the series.

Sly Spy just seems to be them taking memorable parts of a lot of James Bond movies. You have Jaws, Oddjob, the Golden Gun, and the theme from The Spy Who Loved Me among others, but it doesn't seem like that terrible a game. There is a similar game not made by Data East but it is very weird. It's called Thunder Jaws. The final boss is rather... different.

As for Data East, I can't remember if I said this already, but my friend and I have a special place in our hearts for them. There are a few games that they made which you would be amused by:

Mutant Fighter: A co-op vs brawler where you play a bunch of different monsters and mythical beings. You want to see a werewolf fight the hydra? You can here. Hercules vs a dragon? It's in here too. A golem vs the minotaur? Also possible. If you do play it though, either have turbo functions on your controllers or you might break them from the mashing (and possibly lose in the process). Also, all the characters are worth playing just for the things they say when they do their super throws.

Street Hoop: A 3 on 3 basketball game which is really fun and easy to play. Also features a super shot feature (although why you'd use the dunk and not the three pointer, I don't know). Has a sequel called Dunk Dream 95/Hoops 96 which has a few new features and four player (I think).

Side Pocket: A pool game with some rather bizarre ball physics. Especially when the "Data East Super" rebound comes into play and will confuse the hell out of you.

Windjammers: You should know this one though. It's such a silly game, but it's so much fun. I'm surprised that no-one has tried to make a modern day version of it. I may have to go to Kickstarter with it.

Random Castlevania comment: Symphony of the Night did come out on the Saturn, but it was only available in Japan under the name Dracula X (not to be confused with the SNES game of the same name).

Phantasy Star talk: The original was on the Master System, while II, III and IV were on the Mega Drive/Genesis. The third game was kinda separate from the others due to a different development team, but had some neat ideas. The first, second, and fourth game however all were based in the Algol star system, which was comprised of three planets, each with a different culture (Parma which is the elite planet where everything is technologically advanced, Motavia which is the more normal planet and most similar to Earth , and Dezolis which is the planet of ice and snow where the alien humanoid Dezolians live). I never played the first one, but I played the second and fourth, and they're both really good RPGs. The fourth one especially because it closes that part of the series off nicely.

Also, I only played the demo of PSU. It was fun though and I did grind through a few characters. The only thing was that you had to stay the hell away from server 1, because it was full of people trying to sell nude pics for money and other weirdness. I got put in there by random once, and was chased around the lobby by some guy just spamming a speech bubble saying "DEMO NOOB!" over and over again.

Some people are weird.

Whaaaat really? Maybe that was the Xbox servers? I recall the PS2 experience being very orderly. Everyone acted like it was .hack in real life or something. There were even people who would charge gold to escort you through a tough dungeon and let your grind kind of quickly. The main issue I had with PSU was that there were, what, three dungeons in the whole world? And you just ran them again and again and again. That was understandable on the Dreamcast, but jeez. Granted, it was pretty fun up until you cleared the dungeon all the way through... I remember being particularly fond of a water-themed level that turns into a Japanese castle at one point. I really like the idea of an MMORPG that uses action-oriented fighting, rathe than the point-and-click style of e.g. WoW. I'm not sure anyone has managed to truly elevate the concept to something I'd like, but it seems like tech must be getting close to the point of it being feasible?

I tried out Final Fantasy XI for a spell but it made my dick fall off. You can LEVEL DOWN IF YOU DIE.

I still can't believe that this game really exists. We joke about it near the beginning saying that this is in "hell" but after looking into this game, we discovered that it actually does take place in hell. That's some sort of brilliant meta marketing strategy.

I will say, of all the games we play, you may want to wait until you're not at work or something when you want to watch it.

It's funny that you point this out, because when I used to watch Game Grumps, I'd get mad at how lovely they were at the games and think, "Jesus, why do they suck so much?" Now after doing a Let's Play series of our own, I realize you have either interesting/entertaining commentary or good gameplay, but rarely both. I think in this case, we were so taken-a-back by the insanity that we failed to notice anything like that.

Also, I'd be willing to bet that the Korean developers just threw in POW blocks not knowing what they meant at all, because of Mario.

aw man, AvP is the friggin ironman of old school beat em ups. Seriously, this game is so hard, just because it goes on for like 873 levels, and half of them make you feel like you're up against the last boss.

Incidentally, the Jaguar game mentioned at the beginning was a completely different Alien Versus Predator. It was pretty crazy because it was like, the first fps to have versus mode, and they got really clever in that each of the three types plays totally different. But you're right that it's like, the ONLY good game on that system.
