Your best choice for push alerts is probably gonna be IFTTT, that's a separate app from a reader though. If you use Feedbin there's an official notification app for that which is a little quicker than IFTTT.

I don't know of any apps that digest feeds.

Reeder is the most popular RSS app, it supports a lot of services and keeps up to date a lot quicker. You can set it so the badge shows the number of unread items, but that's it.

Is there some sort of greater benefit of scrobbling I don't know about? I've seen people time and time again say they can't live without it. As far as I know it just creates internet noise because no one cares what you personally listen to. I'd like to think there's a really great part of all this I'm missing.

Honestly, at this point it's just because I have used it for so drat long, so it's cool to have a list of what I listened to from 2008 to present, and it's free. So I would say it's really sunk cost fallacy for me at this point. I share it at most once a year with a friend or something, and I never check it.

Subscribe to Feedbin (feedbin.com) and use their notifier app -- I've used the service since it was released and it's fantastic.

If you're looking for an app to read more generally, Reeder or (my personal favorite, though others might disagree) Unread.

So if apps purely just gave you a personal history of what you listened to that no one else could see that would suffice? I'm not trying to be snarky-just curious.

I thought the publishing aspect is what made scrobbling more than just a log.

Well the other benefit of scrobbling is that because it's been around so long and has a not-entirely-terrible API, it has a lot of cross-platform support and, at least for me, it works well with every single music player that I use. There are also cool online tools that can hook into your last.fm account and do things like make visualizations of your music taste over time, recommend shows, etc.

Honestly I mostly use it because I listen to way too many different things to keep track myself and when people ask me for music recommendations it's easy for me to be lazy and send them my last.fm url.

It's a form of diary that remains across music platforms--I've been through winamp, itunes, tomahawk, google play, amazon, songza, mpd, foobar, and I'm sure countless others that I'm forgetting. The ability to look back and find a group of songs I was listening to around those moments you want to remember is invaluable, and keeping it in one place makes that an endeavor I actually take. Because of that, I'll almost always switch to the alternative that can scrobble than the one with a slightly better selection/UI that cannot.

A local solution would not be as appealing, if only again due to device migrations and not seeing a need to lock viewing my music history behind any form of credential. If last.fm didn't exist, it would work, but that along with the social benefits and the routine of 13 years keeps it preferable.

Any recommendation for an app that can track mutual funds? The stock Apple app cannot seem to find the specific fund I'm looking at. Thanks in advance! I did check the OP but there wasn't anything there for this purpose.

No one here is alone,
satellites in every home
AS/Last.fm used to be about the social aspect and sharing what you've been on. And like when you meet someone you could see what they're into which is extremely important for the ages of 15-22. Now I aside from force of habit I mostly use it for the historical statistics and stuff. There's a lot you can do with that data.

Are y'all sure that Mail.app doesn't support push from gmail? I'd never had an iOS device before a couple months ago, so I doubt I'm grandfathered, and I'm definitely getting notifications.

It definitely doesn't. I forgot I had Mail.app on and one day in work I got really confused why I was getting the same email id already gotten on my Inbox app but like ...20 minutes later.

It still notifies you, it just does so at fetch intervals (i.e. Every 15 mins) rather than immediately when the email arrives.

Has anyone had any joy adding premium podcasts to Overcast?
Specifically, I'm trying to add the PWTorch VIP Audio forecast feed.

The site says to use http://www.pwtorch.com/site/feed/podcast/all and add login details. Overcast doesn't seem to give that option so I've modified to
http://username:password@https://www.pwtorch.com/site/feed/podcast/all (tried with https but that didn't work at all).

Now it loads the feed, as in I can see the shows available, but they all fail when I try to download.

Any ideas?

I also had similar problems with password-protected podcasts and Overcast. Even when I could get it to finally download an epsiode, it would only work for like the next 1 or 2 new releases before it would just randomly stop working. And I even paid for the drat app back in the day. RIP 2 me.

Kinda moot now that everyone has Spotify but if you didn't you'd want it for Songkick (concert alerts/feed) unless you're a boring rear end in a top hat who doesn't go to shows. And, once again made fairly redundant by Spotify but it used to be good for finding similar artists without having to make an effort.

Huh. That's unfortunate. I thankfully don't really have to use email all that much so I probably wouldn't notice if it were slightly more sluggish.

Oh but "Business web-feed only" Pulse will still be available! What a loving poo poo show. "Lets buy a (formerly) top rated app with general purpose and make it single purpose so that no one will use it." Assholes.

Ever since Linkedin bought Pulse and immediately broke the sync between the web interface and app I've been desperately looking for a replacement. To no avail.

Nothing I've found has a similar image based interface or even lets you order feeds in a custom order. Everything is text based and just does everything in alphabetical order. Maybe I want to read Lifehacker before Ars Technica, huh?
Apple's news app is.... ok. But it's not as good as old-Pulse in adding literally any page as a feed, it's alphabetical, and it's SLOW AS HELL when refreshing.

All of this means I've just fallen out of the habit of reading any news feeds at all. I don't even go to the webpages in question to read their actual updates. It's annoying.

I can't find my perfect mailbox replacement.

The main problem I have is that for some reason none of them seem to give you the option of deleting or archiving with a different swipe action. Sometimes I want to quickly archive a message, sometimes i want to quickly get rid of it. I've tried Outlook and Swift and Boxer and mail.app and Gmail.app and Inbox and Dashlane as far as I can tell none of them offer this seemingly simple thing. Have I missed something somewhere?

Apart from that they all have various quirks I don't like: Outlook wastes my time with calendaring and contacts, Swift is messy, Inbox too quirky, Gmail swipes are weird.

Basically I just want to keep using Mailbox. gently caress you dropbox.
