I'm actually disappointed they showed all the powers Rey could do already since there's no compelling hook to her ~end of this movie event~ (as if anyone here hasn't seen the movie yet). Like I guess she'll pull the falcon out of a swamp but I don't really care all that much otherwise. Luke doesn't do a mind trick until ROTJ so at least he had that trick to learn. Maybe she'll start pulling star destroyers out of orbit like the force unleashed games? Lol.

There's more to this than lol sexism vs lol Mary Sue. It really just dampens the end of the movie IMO.

I thought the compelling hook was that she finally found her "family" (or literally, family), and having answered The Call will face more trials and challenges, discover more about herself along with the audience, etc. Having demonstrated a few force powers before her character sheet got the right feats and reached the right level prestige classes doesn't really bother me.

I kind of like that we know she's v. strong in the Force, without having to resort to the artlessness of exposition about how many space parasites are swimming around in her guts or how she fits some unexplained "prophecy."

luke loses his hand, loses his spaceship in a swamp, and gets his face hosed up. he's not that goood

also he's the son of space jesus (darth vader was a virgin birth by the force lol) so obv. he's really powerful innately.

Also, Obi Wan was one of the first to become a force ghost since Quaigon invented the idea so maybe his force ghost greatly helped matters in a way never before seen

I hadn't heard that before but it makes sense. All the visions of Ren loving everyone up are more plausible if she was actually there and just mind wiped and programmed with a huge fear of leaving poo poo planet Jakku so Luke could find her again at some point.

I figured she was Luke's daughter cause of the visions and poo poo Maz was saying but didn't really connect it to possible training as a kid. Guess that could make sense.

My idiot guess is that Ren couldn't bring himself to kill her 'cause at that point he was even more conflicted with "the light", so he mind wipes her using his demonstrated brutal mind powers and drops her off hoping she's never found, but at least he won't have to kill her himself. It would explain why she was left with a weird monster who shorts her rations instead of trusted friend/family.

the mind trick was a little weird but i figured that it was because she had heard space wizards used to do that and since she was already tied up and doing nothing she decided she may as well give it a shot considering she had just beaten ren in a force-will-battle

but you see she hadn't taken the prerequisite feats yet nor advanced into the jedi counselar prestige class and it's made very clear in the EU novel Temple of The Mind Jedi that unless you're at least a level 3 padawan learner...

That's bullshit, you just need the force sensitivity feat then take the feat for force training and since humans get a bonus feat she could've taken both at level 1!

The only good things about the Holiday Special are:

- The cartoon short (if only for introducing Boba Fett)

- Bea Arthur's performance in the cantina scene.

What have I become, my Swedish friend?

Rey couldn't do anything until Ren hosed around in her head. Almost as if THE FORCE AWAKENS. She was a competent survivor who lived on her own for years, and then had someone gently caress with her brain which made THE FORCE AWAKEN and then she becomes a competent survivor who can do other poo poo.

Star Wars is genre pulp to its core. That someone is too competent is the dumbest goddamn excuse. Luke and Obi-Wan walk into a bar and just happen to find the BEST smuggler in the galaxy? Why are you so good at smuggling, Han? Leia is a motherfucking princess and a senator (because she has to be royalty while at the same time it should be a republic where the common people matter). The Emperor is evil. Where is your nuanced background, Sheev? Who hurt you?

If you're looking for goddamn relatable characters making real life decisions in Star Wars you're watching the wrong loving films. It's painted with broad strokes for a reason. The good guys literally wear white and the bad guys literally wear black.

Why is it now, now that there's a female protagonist, that you've decided space operas should be more realistic in character actions?

Rey can use a lightsaber well enough to best a sith lord (Finn doing so was way more ridiculous) with absolutely no training or idea how the force would be involved there, and can also beat that dude in a force struggle over a lightsaber when it's been shown earlier in the movie that kylo is a pretty powerful guy who can freeze blaster bolts in mid air and just kind of forget about them.

To be fair, I wouldn't consider Ren a Sith Lord, he is still being trained. Also the dude is struggling with the Dark and Light, so I took that that to mean his force control was sort of lovely at the moment. When you add that he just got shot in the side with a bowcaster and murdered his Dad it seems reasonable to me.

I'd give him a pass. Kid had a monumentally bad day.

Also most of the prequel characters, since that is when Jedi when from subtle to super saiyan.

That's one of the things I liked about the new movie for sure. They portray force users much more in the OT style instead of that over the top prequel crap.

Because you never complained about Luke.

edit: Star Wars is silly and good. And to complain about the current movie for being silly in the same way that the OT was silly is a bad argument. Is any one person sexist who makes a "Well actually...." argument about TFA, probably not. But on aggregate, I'd imagine it's coming from the same people who had a twinge of anger when they saw John Boyega was a main character.

And you didn't watch A New Hope since? When you single out one particular OP character from an array of OP characters, I pretty much have to wonder why you're criticizing that one character. I really did think the answer was "because she's a woman." Now I'm thinking it's "because she's new."
