The US and Cuba have reached an agreement to reopen commercial airline service between the two countries. Sounds like there might be some initial control on the number of flights from the US due to existing infrastructure: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/c821a75b145442dea1ef46043a0799c8/us-cuba-reach-understanding-restoring-commercial-flights hobbesmaster posted:Someone get Sully into congress, clearly this 1500 hour trying isn't cutting it. The JetBlue program is just so odd to me. It's unnecessary. Unlike in Europe there are thousands of qualified pilots working at the regionals, each with thousands of hours of experience in advanced jet aircraft that would like to work for JetBlue. This just seems like it's about control. As if JetBlue's prescreening and training them means they somehow "own" them like it works in China.

The problem is that there are enough pilots at the regionals to replace the retiring mainline pilots over the next several years, but getting people to replace those regional pilots is becoming increasingly difficult, so there's a distinct possibility that mainline carriers (unless they're Delta or FedEx) could end up with a diminishing pool of applicants in the future, and a regional feed that's been gutted to supply pilots to larger carriers. By setting up their own training program (where the applicants are paying for the initial training themselves), JetBlue is taking a step to guarantee themselves a flow of pilots for the future, at what's probably a relatively small cost to the airline.

The FAA could also allow drone aircraft to carry passengers. New industry right there. Hey if drones are already used to kill people, why not use them to carry some as well.

He sees people more junior than him take even worse contracts ending with his profession being paid approximately minimum wage. Whether he believes it all or not, he's certainly repaying the favor.

This is a good idea I'd never thought of before. Another trick is to make a wind card on the ground. Draw a compass rose, then using the winds aloft write your groundspeed at various headings (I do every 30 degrees), that way when you divert and need to estimate your time en route you already have an idea of what your groundspeed should be no matter which direction you're diverted.

The wind vector idea is really good. Just, as is the rule with Sectionals, do it in pencil. Also, re: Cuba. I wonder if this could be a lifeboat for Silver. I'd imagine there are/will be a number of dots they could connect with Saabs that probably make no sense sticking 737s or A320s on, especially once the "Go to Cuba!" hype eventually dies down. PT6A posted:Why did Sully sell his soul to the devil? I mean, he can't actually believe the fearmongering he's engaged in, can he? I can't figure him out. Does some politician (looking at Schumer given their work together) have their arm up his rear end using him as a puppet because "They'll never listen to me, they hate politicians. But they'll listen to him!" in terms of trying to keep this going? Does he have his own political end game he's trying to push through (I once saw on another forum the suggestion he's trying to kill scope)? Pay/lifestyle/benefits definitely need to go up (if that's it), but it hasn't seemed to have worked if that's what he's swinging for (see the $50 Amazon Gift Card for an interview). Or is he genuinely worried about safety, using his celebrity and influence to snow the panicky, outraged gently caress known as John Q. Public into submission? He gets called out more and more by knowledgeable people with each Facebook post he puts up (even by mainline pilots at this point), but I watched his Senate testimony and Joe Manchin was almost ready to leave his seat, walk down, and service him in front of a live CSPAN audience. Someone who's long been a safety advocate, with seemingly nothing but time on his hands at this point, you'd think would be harping more on training than time and could come up with a more balanced argument than "A certain number of hours determines a safe pilot. Those who do not have it are reckless, while those who do are flawless (*Except those trained by JetBlue). And don't worry about that Philadelphia oopsie."

I'd like to take this time to also reiterate that the 1500 hour rule would not have prevented either of the pilots from holding their positions/ATPs in the colgan crash. Also, just because you handled an emergency situation well and became a pilot celebrity doesn't necessarily mean you have good ideas.

Has anyone had to deal with the FAA after going on blood pressure meds? I'm well under the FAA BP limit, but my personal doc thinks BP meds would be a good idea. I'm wondering how much paperwork and testing I'll be in for, and if any of those services that claim to speed up approval are worth it.

I don't think he really cares about safety in as much as it goes beyond the typical senior captain "gently caress you, got mine" attitude. As far as I can tell, that's basically the only thing that motivates him.

Do anything possible to not get on BP meds if you can avoid it. Diet, exercise, lose weight, eat more fruits and fiber, de-stress ... Anything . Red yeast pills help, according to a trusted physician. He refused to prescribe BP meds until red yeast pills have been taken for 6 months. Also consider waiting to do BP meds after the PBOR 2 passes. Captain Apollo fucked around with this message at 00:25 on Dec 24, 2015 |

I called AOPA's aeromedical department about my short-term citalopram use and they told me what to do, not ratting me out or anything. I figured I was going to be deferred over my cured sleep apnea anyway (my AME was the surgeon and knew it was coming), so I figured I'd find out what to do.

CBJSprague24 posted:The wind vector idea is really good. Just, as is the rule with Sectionals, do it in pencil. Also worth noting is that, if relations normalise to the point that OFAC allows normal tourism, there will be flights to resort areas in amazing quantities. There are some strange-rear end charters that operate from Canada to Cuba (like Regina-Santa Clara) on a regular basis using 737-sized metal, so I imagine every city in the US within CRJ/turboprop range of Cuba will be hooked up as soon as tourists are allowed to go. Ironically, it's difficult to get from Canada to Havana or Santiago, which are the only places in Cuba worth visiting for an extended period.

Epilot: that was cause of the casinos and Meyer Lanksy though Further edit: interestingly(I have researched this cause I am nerd ok) Cuba became a huge destination for us tourists originally due to prohibition. You could sale or even fly there in the new dangled planes and get legal.booze and if you were smart bring some home. After repeal it was still in people's mind as an ideal vacation spot. bunnyofdoom fucked around with this message at 07:24 on Dec 24, 2015 |
