That's a problem with a lot more than just Chrysler. You can thank takata, the airbag supplier.

I just got them all replaced under warranty on a 2003 winter beater acura I picked up for a few grand......along with three other recalls. They needed ti for long enough that they gave me a loaner car, which is hilarious considering what I brought them for repair.

today at work I heard a noise and went outside to checkquote:Racing car engineers would not approve of the Pantera's handling either. Nor will enthusiastic street drivers for that matter. It has a bad habit of oversteering abruptly when you lift off the throttle in a turn. An inexperienced driver can find himself in the hedges without ever knowing what he did wrong. And he is easily caught off guard because the Pantera's normal posture is a healthy understeer.

Any car will do that. Lifting mid-corner is a basic don't, and you shouldn't be on throttle going into a turn anyway. That's not to say it doesn't have some inherent hanging issue due to the suspension geometry or setup and they just didn't explain that well.

Im currently renting a chevy sonic while on vacation. I mean i get it, its a basic compact thats made to do a job. Its got a tiny bit of get up and go, its comfortable, it has good storage and all that. But what it is lacking, visibility. Like seriously, A pillars go on forever so you need to pull the nose out half a lane before you can make a turn and risk getting t-boned. When backing up the rear view is pointless, turning your head around is even worse, so relying on just my wing mirrors to do that. Checking for something on your drivers side rear quarter is an exercise in futility, cos you will just be staring at a double thick B pillar. Who signs off on these designs?!
|
# ? Dec 28, 2015 05:55 |
|
You can blame safety requirements for a lot of that - many, many newer cars have pillars that are miles long.

# ? Dec 28, 2015 06:03 |

Every post-06(ish) American design is like that, in my experience, except the pickups. Nothing beats sitting at a 4 way stop, craning your neck to see around the pillars for cross traffic. Or not doing that, and missing an entire work van.

I get that its a safety thing (what with the A pillars having big rubber stamps saying 'airbag' down the length of them). But in Europe (where im from) we manage to make economy and compact cars with a decent range of visibility, as do a lot of the japanese imports we have on offer. Why are late model American vehichles so bad at this?

American automakers are leaning pretty hard into the "they're going to buy our poo poo because it's (American|cheap), so why bother with good design?" mindset. Chrysler in particular.
|
# ? Dec 28, 2015 06:16 |
|
I'd say that U.S. automakers are only willing to do the most basic design and engineering work to make their vehicles compliant with the latest crash safety standards, because anything beyond that costs more in profit than they're willing to part with. Designing A and B pillars for visibility as well as safety is already an expense they'd rather do without, so they don't do it.

Toyota is about the same front end visibility, it's not just an American thing. Safety mandates it, the only solution we'll get is eventually someone will put cameras outside the A pillars and some kind of curved display wrapped around the interior side of the pillar to make them "invisible." Will cost a zillion dollars and no one will be able to repair them, but problem solved, on to the next!
