Auron does say he never drank again after that but it seems like before Spira Jecht was a drunk POS The game in one of the flashbacks just flat out tells you that he was a drunk at all times in the past, like dude was a real mean drunk to his son and his wife apparently and his wife was too wrapped up in "I married a star" to get out of the relationship leading to more and more child abuse.

Yeah, you don't see much love for the Berserk anime these days, it suffers a lot from outdated animation and even more so when you see how ridiculously ornate the manga's art can be.

Yeah, it's not even the animation quality itself (though it certainly isn't one of the finest works from the 90s) so much as it is that any adaptation less than perfect is gonna come up short to the manga. Hopefully the new anime will manage that (I mean, the OPM one did so with aplomb).

I think if there's one thing I sort of am interested in with the new series it's to see if they edit the Black Swordsman arc at all because some of that first arc is just weird, like the literal first thing that happens is Guts having sex with a succubus apostle which doesn't make any sense with his actual character.
