This reminds me, my friend just told me about his old high school team: quote:The school teams were known as the Pekin Chinks from the 1930s until 1980 when the school administration changed the nickname to the Dragons.[15] The team mascots were a male and female student dressed as Chinese persons wearing stereotypical Chinese attire. The mascots would strike a gong whenever the team scored.

Yep Queensland, the most racist state in a racist country had a cricket stadium called "friend of the family Brown" after a rugby player with very fair skin because that's what passed for humour in those days. The sign was finally taken down and the stadium renamed - amidst huge howls of protest and legal action which lasted for years - in 2009.

My high school in PA still has a racist Indian motif despite a good 15+ years of protests about it https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warwick_High_School_(Lititz,_Pennsylvania) They've replaced it in some places with a native American themed spear but it doesn't really do anything to change the main message

My alma mater, prior to 1989 had a really horrific logo. To really understand how especially horrific this is, the red area indicates tribal land. The reservation "proper" (as in where most Chippewa reside) begins just west of the casino at about Summerton rd. Also note the location of the boarding school north northwest of the university. In 1989 the university removed all Native American iconography and forbid things like costumes, chants, etc. from university grounds. They changed the logo to this. Which then became the "famous" Flying C. Since the casino opened in 98 the tribe is now in the odd position of being roughly as powerful, politically, as the university because they're one of the largest employers in the area, just behind the university itself. The university still uses the name "Chippewas" with the permission of the tribe. They seem to have a fairly good relationship, which the university tries very hard to advertise with gestures like naming the entire tribe as grand marshal of the homecoming parade. On paper the mayor runs the town but in reality it's a triumvirate of mayor, chief and university president (and not necessarily in that order) and my understanding is that the tribe's part of that deal is political support from the university. In 1989 when they changed the name the political calculus was very different and the tribe was poor as hell and hated by everyone in the area. My racist neighbor when I was growing up used to cackle telling us kids about how in the 70s and 80s they'd drive on the dirt roads in the reservation and toss empty beer bottles at barefoot Indians walking into town, claiming it was "helping" them because they could later turn the bottles in for $0.10. Lots of locals still hate the tribe for the same racist reasons but the classism has gone in the other direction and people are super jealous of the tribe's money. http://www.themorningsun.com/article/MS/20131012/NEWS/131019817 That said, even 20-odd years after forbidding racist poo poo it still happens fairly regularly. Relatives of mine have worked security at university football games for several years and they tell me they have to turn away about one kid per game who shows up with a racist costume of some kind, usually a headdress.

quote:In 1919, Chief Lame Deer approached Arthur Savage to purchase lever-action rifles for the Indian reservation and the two men struck a deal. The tribe would get discounted rifles and Savage would get their support and endorsement. It was at this time in the company's history, that Arthur Savage added the Indian head logo--a direct gift from the Chief--to the company name. Still, lol at "savage arms"

S-U-P-E-R posted:This reminds me, my friend just told me about his old high school team: My mother went to high school there. Apparently the root of the "Chink" theme was just that Pekin sounds a lot like Peking, and there was a town legend that if you dug a hole straight down into the earth from Pekin, you'd wind up in Peking, China. What do you really expect from someone who runs around calling people chinks, though? As an extra bonus and show of school spirit, my mother says that they even renamed the titles of Prom King and Queen to Chink and Chinkette. I've never been able to verify that, but I could probably dig it up in one of my aunt's old yearbooks as she went there as well. Here, have some Pekin High school spirit.

Said the woman with a BA from NYU and a PhD in Philosphy, loving lol My first question was "Oh ok, what kind of engineer are you?" but naturally the person criticizing the career choices of others had to be a person with a Humanities Doctorate, the unicorn of unemployability. Yeah, becoming good at a trade is economically worthwhile but the average person is better off going to college. Rowe's bachelors degree was in communications, btw. He's really good at communicating the need for tradesmen to keep fixing his poo poo. Also, according to Wikipedia he lives in San Fran.
