I watched this as well and it's definitely one of those things that would at the very least have been worth seeing for how batshit crazy it would have been. Everyone I've ever mentioned the aborted Tim Burton Superman movie to just goes "eww" when I tell them it was going to be Nicholas Cage, but that's one of the most interesting things about it. I also love that Jon Peters was like "Superman has to fight a giant spider." for no real reason other than it would have been cool.

He's not wrong

I saw this documentary last month on Showtime:

....and part of me thinks "Oh god, this would have been so incredibly bad.", but the other part of me thinks "Holy poo poo, the insane creature concepts and gigantic set designs alone would have been worth the price of admission." I've read Kevin Smith's script from cover to cover, and holy smokes, most of it was painfully 1990's, and it's very cheesy throughout, but some of the concepts would have probably been sick as hell.

Does this really warrant an entire documentary film? Like, maybe a magazine article but I can't imagine this project would have been so fascinating it needs t be mythologized. This isn't like Jodorowsky's Dune where a walking drug-trip of a director managed to hire Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, Salvador Dali, Pink Floyd and other people of actual interest.

I think the fact that the pasty nerd director inserts himself into every interview here is a good cue-in that this film has conceptual problems.

Yes. The guy who made it is clearly an amateur but the movie is really good in spite of him because the story itself is actually that fascinating. There were several people with some very out there ideas who were very passionate about making this movie and I'm glad I got to hear them tell that story. Did you actually watch the documentary?

Kevin Smith's panel discussion about Superman Lives is great, and the bit about Jon Peters' weird obsession with the giant spider fight is worth the price of admission all on its own.

yeah i mean, Rodriguez edits movies in his house. Sure that's not Lucas level money, but he doesn't do it cause he's poor, he does it cause he can. He has a really sweet setup that you can see in some of the behind the scenes features on his dvds.

I wonder if it had to do with his increasing budgets, he seemed to work well within limits and once those limits were removed, his dumbass excesses were easier to indulge.

Although, I did find that Sin City held up ok for me. There's a lot of dumb stuff in it, but Marv's story is so energetic that I got sucked into it all again. Bruce Willis' story fell flat for me on the 2nd go around though.

I saw the trailer and it looked visually ugly. Like bad.

Also I've basically outgrown Sin City, so I don't plan on rewatching the original, like ever. Don't get me wrong, I'm still an immature jackass, but that sort of thing just doesn't interest me as much any more. Like, badassery for it's own sake is a dime a dozen.
