It's kind of crazy how he's a billionaire basically because he was in the right place at the right time. I mean, he didn't do anything revolutionary, he just had an idea that a million other people probably also did around that same time and through luck and circumstance it worked out. I will consider this further as I eat my store brand frozen pizza this evening.

Yeah everyone kinda jumped ship from MySpace literally just because you could poke people on facebook.

It was basically a creepy billion dollar finger.

Couldn't you not basically do anything on Myspace other than collect friends and bother girls though? I think FB was the first thing to implement the lovely feeds of today.

I remember Bulletins, which were posts that all of your friends could see and comment on, and most people just used them to post Myspace surveys. Despite using Myspace for about four years, the rest of it is a complete blur to me.

For me the Appeal of Facebook was avoiding seizure inducing gifs and blaring nickel back every time I opened a page on MySpace.

Facebook was fantastic when it was a page with a picture and a feed. It has been hot trash for over a decade and I have no idea why so many idiots still log on there.

Because with the advent of cheap and easy home surveillance equipment actual stalking is too risky.

2005 seemed to be when facebook started taking over and this is how I remember it, basically just myspace but cleaner.

Facebook is the best it's ever been honestly, as pessimistic as it sounds the fact that they've researched the poo poo out of psychology and datamining to tailor the site perfectly to tickle all the obsessive parts of the brain has worked well in terms of accessibility. I don't actually use FB all that much anymore, but I give the company credit for (unlike Twitter and other stupid bullshit tech bubble companies) trying to make the site into something that can adapt and last. Facebook, along with Amazon, is one of the only major tech bubble companies I can see weathering the impending pop.

The Social Network did a good job at illustrating how big of a dweeby goon Zuckerberg is though lol

Facebook was pretty cool when it was just some East Coast Unis and Cali UCs using it. Actually, it was still ok when it just required .edu emails from approved state schools. Then JCs got on board and high schools and middle schools and then John Q Public was able to make an account with their aol or yahoo account. And now it's an ad infested shithole where you are forced to sift through your Aunt's 15+ motivational jpeg quotes a day for any real funny content just to end up with more motivational pics from that one dude who got sent to jail in highschool for stealing $5000 worth of poo poo who just got out.

Before the fall:

-Pics of people hosed up at parties.
-Pics of everyone's weed stash.
-Underground groups for planning parties or town events.
-Random hosed up funny poo poo often morally offensive and as insensitive as gently caress.
-Simple clean profiles.
-Reminder of the final's schedule.

After the fall:

-Endless albums of everyone's ugly kids.
-Albums of everyone's dinner meals.
-Wedding pictures non-stop even 5+ years after said wedding.
-Old people posting "gently caress men" or "gently caress women" unironic jpeg qotes.
-90+ invites to play "casino slot farmland simulator"
-Everyone's lovely political views on Trump, Bama, Bush, Whatever.
-Your 70 year old dad making a facebook page to stay relevant.
-Getting fired from your job for posting goatse every 4 hours as an attempt to thin the herd of "friends".

O well.

For the old times, just setup a Slack server with all your close buddies. The kids and the old people don't know about that....
yet......

Funny thing is I anticipated that myspace would take over due to all the myspace music pages.

What the gently caress happened?

Last thing I remember is the owners grabbing a bunch of ad contracts and pages of unrestricted .html usage making most user pages crash IE or Firefox.

Its all pretty weird though. In the early 2000s SA was one of the biggest things on the English speaking internet, now a "mere" 40 million hits in a month is a sign of failure.

I had freshman orientation in August 2005 and one of the things everyone was super excited about was getting that .edu address so we could get on facebook.

My favorite part of that old facebook was that writing on someone's wall just pulled up a text document thing with all of the past poo poo people had written completely editable. Like anything could go wrong with that.
