Vladimir Poutine posted:Ha... the search function actually works and I found this ancient thread. Click here for The Grid Thanks for the link. Looks like I was right on both counts. Yes, it is at times an amazing discussion. Oh well, each to their own I guess. Certainly not mainstream but the logic behind it makes some sense. Hard to see how it would scale though. Be nice if everyone has access to a forest to try this out if they were so inclined. I might run into trouble putting this system in place at the local park. Also, was auspol once just an endless thread of poo poo posts and now just a monthly thread of poo poo posts?

gay picnic defence posted:Anyone know what the new 'anti union corruption' laws to come out of the royal commission are? It'd be funny if the ALP passed them with amendments so they apply to businesses and lobby groups too but they'll probably just roll over and wave them through unchanged. Labor really, really wants to repeat the 2007 election campaign, and so will start yelling Workchoices at any IR policy the Coalition proposes. They aren't going to pass poo poo.

Just to expand on this, the ABCC was created after a royal commission into the building industry (hmmmm....). The biggest issue was that as a regulator it had extraordinary powers of coercion, meaning you did not have a right to silence. This article gives a good example of the kind of action that can take place under such a body. http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/even-bystanders-feel-building-watchdogs-bite/2007/12/14/1197568264669.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap1 quote:He was an innocent witness to a minor scuffle, but he was interrogated for hours. If the ATO calls you in for an interview though you aren't barred from talking about it and there are ways of challenging notices if they are unreasonable. The ABCC's powers actually look more like the Star Chamber aka the Crime Commission.

I was told by a friend of mine who works at the ATO it wasn't unheard of a few years ago for the police to seek out the ATOs help in some instances where they couldn't get a warrant to search a premises. Pretty much they'd ask the ATO for help who'd send an official request for police presence at their "investigation" and the police would circumvent the law. I don't know if this is still the case because it was over ten years ago but yeah the ATO can pretty much do what they want.
