The LP is making it look a lot easier though. Then again, I haven't played a rail shooter since forever. Or those Korean mobsters just have really tiny heads.

Let's Mangle the English Language in Mega Man X 2. Let's Play Sega Master System Games: Danan the Jungle Fighter Danan the Jungle Fighter is a game about a Conan lookalike stabbing women with a knife, but it gets even crazier than that. I do Sega Master System ROM Pit streams on Hitbox every Tuesday, usually joined by RSCNyx and Geisha-Deconstruct. Most of the sessions are horrible, because the games are horrible, but sometimes we get gems like this one and put them up on YouTube as one-offs.

Well, I got a new mic, but I also got Witcher 3. Goodbye, cruel world. A bit more on-topic, the final level in Blue Estate is loving brutal and I really want to see someone actually competent handle that thing.

The boss fights are probably the worst part of the game, they just take for loving ever and aren't very challenging. But hey, the next level is easily my favorite in the game mostly because I enjoy killing Russians and it's awesome. Hua.

Why did they go on and make this a rail shooter? I mean if it was a regular shooter (or even point and click) it would have been much fun.

Of course, I just mean the general mood and aesthetic design of this game (atmosphere, setting, characters...etc) is better explored (in my opinion) in other genres, anything but a rail shooter which I am not a fan of.

I agree, but man, I bet the budget and effort required for a truly exploratory shooter would have rocketed this game out of the studio's reach. With a rail shooter you know exactly where every enemy'll be at all times, and where the camera will be, so you can polish everything to just a mirror sheen.
|
# ? Dec 29, 2015 17:37 |
Yeah, sounds like a budgetary issue. Plus they were making a game based on an obscure comic book so who knows how much success they were expecting - I'd honestly never even notice the game (past "that sounds like Russian survival horror, gently caress that") if not for the LP and I doubt I was the only one. It's a tiny game by all records - there's only two levels remaining and my playthrough of the story took all of two hours. Hopefully it'll see some success that'd encourage these folks to make more games. I'd love to see a full-blown FPS Blue Estate too - apparently this one's only picked a couple of stories from the comic so there should be plenty more material. edit: My bad, the company that made it is French. Phew, now I can enjoy some more or less guilt-free slaughter. anilEhilated fucked around with this message at 19:54 on Dec 29, 2015 |

With a free-roam shooter you have to make sure every single piece of geometry lines up in every single place a player might go, even places you don't want them to go. This also applies to textures, physics boundaries, etc. I was working on an AAA racing game way back in the day and they introduced a new game mechanic that would benefit from a looser, farther away camera behind the car. The whole thing had be axed because it would reveal too much of the world that wasn't modelled/textured and would have added about 30% to the art budget.

So much of Bubsy would be fixed by the simple addition of being able to take multiple hits like Sonic. It still wouldn't be any GOOD, but it wouldn't be so horrible.

Did you notice how the double bosses only need two hits each to die? Those assholes knew what they were doing, that game is balanced around Bubsy being a one-hit wonder. All those deathtraps and situations were there are enemies above and under you, trying to sucker you into jumping just that little bit too far or too high, that's all planned out. The programmers probably were giggling like little schoolgirls when assembling that mess.
