I don't know if macross is your franchise to start if your desire only came after watching Delta.

I think that the preview episode of Frontier was different from the broadcast version, so hopefully they beef up the CGI in the next few months.

Macross Plus is the best place to start since it tells a solid, self-contained story that's very well animated, and you can knock it out in a single afternoon.

Honestly, that felt even less like Macross than Delta does to me. Macross was always a little goofy and cheesy to me, but Plus takes itself incredibly seriously and also kind of sucks if you don't have nostalgia for it.

The nostalgia argument is a real bad one in general but with Macross in particular I'd say it's doubly so.

Plus has some cool dogfights and visuals and Brian Cranston is in the dub so there's quite a bit to like, but at the same time I'd say that you should be prepared to accept that it's in no way indicative of the franchise as a whole. Which personally, I'm just as happy with, because as dumb and silly as they are I love 7 and the first episode of Delta and cannot wait to see more transforming idol combat and surfing valkyries and what not.

Srice posted:The nostalgia argument is a real bad one in general but with Macross in particular I'd say it's doubly so. I'm mostly saying that because I just recently rewatched Plus for the first time in over 10 years, and it really didn't hold up for me beyond the music, the concert, and those few quiet scenes where I didn't have to hear anyone talk. Short version is that at this point in my life, the protagonist and his rival come off as entitled douchebags having a dick waving contest with no concern for anyone else, but the way it's all framed seems like they expected me to have a very different reaction to them. It made it pretty frustrating to watch. But regardless of its quality, if they called it "Mecha Test Pilots" and removed the Macross itself from that last episode, I wouldn't have thought it even had that much Macross influence beyond the whole jet fighters that turn into robots thing. I don't think watching this OVA will tell you whether you'll like anything else in the franchise.

I think that last point holds true for a lot of entries. Macross does experiment with a lot of stuff for better or worse and at its core it has a few reoccurring elements but the broad strokes can get shaken up. Easiest example to point to would be Macross 7 with its space demons and music-powered energy beams. Or Macross Zero and whatever the heck it was supposed to be.

I definitely disagree, I've rewatched Plus plenty of times over the years and it's always been a blast. The only thing that disappoints me is when I get to the last ~15 minutes of the 4th episode and I think "man I wish I could switch to the movie for this part".

I watched Macross Plus again for the first time in well over a decade this last Sunday, and I think it holds up. It's pretty, the music is good, you just have to accept it's about three fundamentally broken and kind of horrible people.

It's pretty, the music is good, you just have to accept it's about three fundamentally broken and kind of horrible people. That last part really is the most important part. Macross Plus is, at its core, the tale of a very hosed up love triangle where none of the three people involved people handled it very well at all. None of them are particularly emotionally, if not mentally, healthy. On the other hand the valkporn scenes tend to be amazing and the YF-21 is still pretty much my favorite thing to ever come out of Macross.

I can't see myself sticking with Delta. Macross is just incompatible with me despite my best efforts. I want more of SDF and Plus, not this bizarre magical girl thing. There are better ways to integrate music into your show than going full idol, and then going fuller idol. Macross has been crazy since 7, but still.

Heck, I love Macross 7 a lot and I hated that first ep of Delta.

Who knows, it might be really good despite the absurdity. It's just not really the type of show I would prefer to see. I'm going to judge it based on its own merits first rather than condemn it for not being something completely different.

boom boom boom posted:Frontier was great Frontier was alright, but it's far from perfect. There's definitely a lot more otaku pandering in it than any other Macross show (like the character that turns into a loli), and they tossed out the franchise's unique melee attacks (Pinpoint Barrier Punch) for boring old beam knives.

I liked when someone in the Frontier thread said the episode where that one dude died was the saddest event in anime history matched only by Grave of the Fireflies.

Frontier is okay but it's one of those weird shows that would be massively improved by being either half or double their actual length. I remember enjoying the first movie more than the TV version but never actually got around to watching the second one for some reason.

The second movie goes a long way towards improving some of the plot stuff in the latter parts of the tv series that felt half-baked.

I really like both the Frontier series and movies...but i think i've kinda somehow squashed them together in one big weird Macrossy blob in my head. The couple of Big Events that are unique to each one are distinct at least.

My two cents on Frontier: Mediocre lead character, too much love triangle hijinks, a very good (and often times more interesting) supporting cast, good music, and run into the ground by other media (i.e., games) so hard it has become frustrating.

Yea, Basara and Mylene literally generating beams and shields using nothing but song in 7 is still weirder, if not as dynamic visually. Speaker pod gamma was pretty hilarious too, as was fleet of the most dangerous women. Pretty sure Basara made flowers turn to face him using song in one of the television movie specials too.
