Solemn Sloth posted:Good Guys do electronics as well as whitegoods. I guess but from my vision (brisbane, grain of salt) they're a medium sized retailer. Don't nearly have the same amount of stores like JB or Harvey Norman. Though Harvey Norman seems to be scaling back its electronics department a bit. There's also Jaycar I guess but they are more for tradies and such.

DSE didn't know where it was in the market anymore. They used to be an electronics/hobby store but Jaycar has that market now. They tried to move towards consumer electronics but JB was already established by then and undercutting everyone on price.

Retravision was another one that hosed up massively too. Australia just seems to naturally drift towards a mono/duopoly because the competition always fucks up on management level and the consumer naturally drifts towards the lower prices which is towards the establishment.

They wanted to be both because they were merged with Tandy stores so you had fragmentation on a store to store basis where some stores would be consumer electronics and others would be cable and connection suppliers. They were designed to be hosed.

Anatomy of pump-and-dump, that's breathtaking. Note how useful it is to be a private equity firm, no public statements of your workings required, so you can sound believable in your bullshit. They really exploited the inventory brilliantly. Yeah Tandy got swallowed by DSE on order of Big W which destroyed the retail electronics market because they gutted the inventory, until Jaycar picked it up. Tandy had brilliant people who nursed the retail market, Jaycar doesn't have that kind of engagement, and never expected to. And now it's too late because the international market on the internet is far more cutthroat on inventory than any retail shop, and so Jaycar are very careful not to over-extend on kits etc.

Cartoon posted:This makes dealing with Jaycar (As a wholesaler) really annoying/difficult. Their product range goes in quality from garbage tier to fanfuckingtastic. The only way to find out is to get one in stock. When you find it is a genuinely great product at a phenomenal price point and order in more they are often out of stock and then the product never reappears. I'm told this is a frustration with dealing with Chinese manufacturers in general but that is someone else's problem. Tell me about it, searching their online web store with keywords is a bloody nightmare. Blaming the Chinese is a cop-out, there's always someone else who has it. Sometimes it's better to rock up to a store and ask. If I haven't bought it through ebay already.

Who knew Anidav has such a passion and a well of knowledge for defunct (or near defunct) electronic chains! I've tried Jaycar for one of my nerdy hobbies and I've basically given up on them. The biggest challenge as a hobbiest is finding out what they have. And small purchases are a killer. Although I'm ashamed to admit it I use eBay pretty much 100% now. It seems sellers are much more incentivised to articulate what they have, eBay's search isn't too bad and you can buy across many sellers at minimal cost. Buy at minimal cost your own peril though. You get what you pay for so quality can be hit and miss. There are now a lot of Autralian based e-stores that front Chinese manufacturers now so quality can be less of a problem once you find some of them. I always buy from another state as I've found some suppliers get very aggressive if you complain as they don't want negative eBay feedback. I don't want them landing on my doorstep.

The markups are huge compared with online, and thanks to the proliferation of niche forums there is so much free info on just about any topic you can think of out there that you don't need to go to a shop for advice. I appreciate that it sucks for traditional businesses, especially if they aren't part of a larger chain but at the same time I don't feel obliged to spend twice or three times as much of my quite limited supply of money just to keep someone's business afloat.

Ebay is pretty good for cables and such these days but for larger goods such as TVs, Apple/Roku/Android app boxes and sound setups. Going in person is best to check for quality. Buying in person is another story as trying it in a store and buying it online is the smart thing to do.

Otherwise do your research and buy online. Some things you can't just buy online sight unseen. I'd love to buy shoes online but I'm too wary of getting the wrong size. I bought a bass guitar online which was a very scary thing to do, but I did my research first and I have bought (and continue to buy) musical equipment online as I do my research. Having said that, I'll probably go to a guitar store and play stuff anyway because no amount of youtube videos helps you with an actual object you need to be comfortable with for years, and that applies to many things. And big surprise: people have always tried-and-not-buyed. The word of mouth might be more valuable than an immediate sale, you'd be surprised. Graic Gabtar posted:I always buy from another state as I've found some suppliers get very aggressive if you complain as they don't want negative eBay feedback. How is it useful to have to say 5/5 out of everything on every drat transaction, how does that serve anyone? And blaming me for the feedback mechanism guarantees I'll never buy from a vendor, I skip any shop/item that makes a fuss about it in their blurb, I've got no time for that bullshit and neither should vendors, who should be telling ebay to pack it in.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has accidentally sent the number 25 to a journalist. He had intended to send it to himself for safekeeping. The journalist in question, who did not wish to be named, said it was offensive to see a Government Minister’s IQ in your inbox. “It’s pretty ugly,” she said this morning. Mr Dutton said he often forgot his IQ, and wanted to have it at hand to quote in cabinet and departmental meetings. “I always get the five and the two mixed up. So sometimes I think it’s 52!” he laughed. The mishap echoes a similar incident in 2008 when then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd purposely leaked his IQ to journalists. He later said he was disappointed there were not enough characters available in an SMS.

If they don't have a demo model of the item you want - providing demos is expensive. Going to a full service store to try a tech item then buying from a box shifter like MSY isn't much less scummy than buying online.

As a specialist retailer I want you to come into my shop for what ever reason you may have even if it is to try before buying online. Once I have you in my shopping environment I might be able to tempt you with any number of other items that you couldn't be arsed buying online. You may also come to me to service your online purchases. Footfall is everything in bricks and mortar retail and if we present a more welcoming and less 'scary' environment than online vendors who get shirty about comments we will steer your business back off line. Unfortunately most online purchasers seem to embrace the 'never leaving home again' side of the online world and once lost to the convenience of home shopping never return to bricks and mortar, even to try before online purchase. Sports bet odds on Dutton making it to the next election as a minister? Now that could be a sound investment!
