Supplementing hhonors points with cc spends and such is useless. SPG is way better for now with that and also better rates imo than Hilton when staying at their respective properties.

Are any of the rental car companies' benefits worth it? I got stuck with Avis after a few years with IBM and haven't switched. I don't think I've ever gotten a free rental out of it, maybe a discounted day or two. Has been good for the occasional upgrade, but nothing super notable since I stopped the weekly travel.

I like how the Emerald selection works for National and it's spoiled me for car rentals. Pretty consistent on being upgraded.

Yeah I think once you get up to Executive (which doesn't take a whole lot) you get some decent upgrades.

Agreed on national. Also get rental days fairly quickly (1:6 ratio)

I've used all the major rental places and national is by far the best. Even at smaller airports that don't have an emerald aisle or executive selection they still usually give me whatever I want and only charge me for a midsize.

I don't know what all the complaints about hertz are for. I've not had a problem with them as presidents circle or whatever their top tier is (although we have a Corp contract to get cars with less than 15k miles). I think I had 16 rentals from 10/15-12/15 and swapped out the Chrysler 200 every time I got one. I'm not paying for the gas, so I didn't care that I had to take a jeep instead once. Caveat though, I'm usually dealing with bigger airports/ I've got 4500 hertz points which is good for more than a week rental (2750 points), or they transfer to other programs (600:500 for AA, or 600:1200 for southwest if you fly them). I also get 500 United miles for every rental. I think I've gotten 6k-7k United miles in the last couple months only from rentals.

National is the only decent rental car company.

Seriously national is the only choice for business travelers. You may be able to get a cheaper Kia Rio if you book through Budget with your AAA discount while you schlep the kids around West Palm, but for business it's no contest.

Not having to interact with anyone is a huge plus. And you don't get 'upgraded' into more car than you need (looking at you Hertz, if I wanted an SUV I would have reserved one). You just pick one and go. If they have nothing you like in the aisle just ask nicely and they'll bring you whatever you ask for within reason as long as they have it. My only complaint with National is that their point system is based off rentals, not days or price. And I normally rent for a week at a go. So I don't earn all that many free days. But it doesn't bother me much since I rarely use my rental car days anyway.

There's a thread on FT saying that there's a new AA elite status challenge. First, can I do this if I don't already have status with an airline? Second, is it worth spending $200 of my own money on a platinum challenge (for 12,500 EQMs)? I added them up and I'll have at least 7300 miles flown in this month alone on AA. Many more to come over the next 3 months, so I should hit the 12,500 easily. e: could I select AA on my Amex PRG card and get $100 of the $200 refunded for this year's airline reimbursement?

I'm sure you're aware that the challenges were to be axed this year, I'd do it. $200 is nothing especially if you end up with international travel that puts you through HKG. Lounge access there is on another level.

Silvercar is cool. But offsite at most airports. I find even the lowest tier of rental where you get in the car and go to be faster out of the airport. Dropping off at the terminal via silvercar is great though. Also their nav systems are horribly outdated and they don't come with a backup camera which is mindboggling for an Audi.

Does National do status matching? I have president's circle with Hertz via Delta Diamond status, but have no real loyalty to them.

I doubt they would match a not-real status but you can try! Silvercar is OK, but if it's not on a promo rate it's way too expensive and it's not all that convenient. I'll stick with my gangsta 300Cs from National.

It's too pricey for me and they have a chokehold on the HK market. It's ridiculous that It's cheaper to fly from Taiwan (or other surrounding cities) --> HKG --> YVR and HKG --> YVR Direct. I'm thinking of moving to Star Alliance instead because I fly mostly to Germany for work and I like to go to Japan for fun. Star Alliance has ANA, Luthansa, and the best value Turkish Airlines and the backup joke airline of Air China. Sky team sounds tempting because I do enjoy Air France and China Eastern sends me to Shanghai which I enjoy stopping by. I'm out of the loop when it comes to American connections, can someone please fill me in? Maybe this is all moot anyways because I realize that most of the points I earn are more from credit card redemption points than actual flights.
