How on Earth did I miss this? Watching episodes 1 and 2, I have a vague feeling that a lot of the characterisation hadn't come together yet - Fuyutski's* thinking about how nice Gendo and Shinji's reunion will be pleasant, Misato's larking about doesn't seem quite like her either, and the Instrumentality Committee are full of crap. I also noticed that the geofront apparently has bloody great windows for some reason. And how on Earth do they launch the Evas from under the pyramid to New Tokyo-3.** On the other hand, the speedboat ride and journey to Unit-01's pen seems like a dream, or a memory, rather than the more objective narration style that happens elsewhere. And it's more political than I remembered, especially the generals shouting stuff like "It didn't work! We need more firepower!". And the direction is really cool. * In this shot you see him switch from his long face seen from the front, to his more realistic side face, and it looks awful. ** Sounds weird, but I'm sure that's what the sign said...

I thought I was gonna be out tonight so I watched the eps earlier but then plans fell through. But needless to say the first ep tonight is as excellent as I had remembered it. It's definitely my favorite of the monster of the week section of the show.

First episode has one of the best moments I have ever seen in an anime (I am out of the house, so I watched earlier today) Asuka ineffectually trying to slam the sliding paper door Spoiler because I am not 100% sure where it is in the specific episode, but it should be about now.
