The Doctor Who EU is wierd because Doctor Who is both very attached to its canon, but also doesn't take it too seriously. The best EU stuff is the standalone stories that could have been an episode if they were scripts instead, which is why the audio plays work so well (and having the actual cast helps. John Hurt is going to be reprising his role as the Doctor this year in them!). Lost tried to have an EU, there were some really bad YA novels that were pointless. Remember when they introduced Nikki and Pablo in season 3, acted like they'd be important and they were doing secret stuff in the background before, but the fans hated them and they got killed off quickly so the show could go back to the actual plot after the writer's strike? The books were a worse version of that. The game is truly awful - it's not even fun in a bad way like say, The Walking Dead:Survival Instinct is. You walk around, talk to some low quality recreations of characters from the show (most not voiced by the actual actors), solve a few fusebox puzzles, and the game ends on a nonsensical cliffhanger, and was quickly declared non-canon to the show. The oddest thing was the Lost Experience ARG. At first it was cool, hinting at the background of some of the lore, filling in some plot details, hinting at future storylines. Then it got wierd by focusing on a hacker lady. Fair enough, but then they did increasingly odd things like giving out chocolate at comic shops. There's a minor character in the pilot who gets sucked into a turbine, and throughout the first and second seasons, the characters pass around a manuscript for a novel he was carrying, just for something to read. They actually published the novel, and it was really, really bad, and had nothing to do with Lost except a few namedrops and being used as a cipher for puzzles in the ARG. Then the hacker lady turned up at comic-con to yell at the Lost writers in a scripted bit? Then it turned out that the numbers from the show were used to predict the apocalyse and that was the big reveal? (Note: none of this had any bearing on the TV show's plot, and was actually contradicted by the end of the show - according to the ARG, the DHARMA group was still active in the modern day, in the show it became defunct in 70s, stuff like that). And all of this was sponsored by Sprite for some reason. They did another ARG the year after, but it was about one of the anonymous background survivors played by extras, and didn't cause that much of a stir. As much as I liked that show, the attempts at giving it an EU seem like a waste of time and money in hindsight.

Like I said, the tech/props and the concept are solid on their own, I think it could work in other contexts. Real Ghostbusters proved it can work pretty well as a different sort of adventure story, those characters are barely their actors anymore. Maybe this is just another part of that weird thing where I guess I don't "get" Bill Murray whereas everyone else my age seems to worship the guy. Ramis was the funniest Ghostbuster Gutcruncher posted:There was Extreme Ghostbusters which took place after The Real Ghostbusters and features a cripple. It's better than it sounds. Okay so Im several episodes into Clone Wars and I'm still unclear on something. How come every time Ashoka and Anakin are in a scene together, Anakin has to say something extremely filthy and inappropriate for children's TV, followed immediately by him looking straight into the camera and doing an eyebrow thing? His bow-tie even did a goofy spin that one time. I'm okay with this kind of stuff in my TV shows, but usually there's some kind of explanation in the first few episodes why a character would keep doing that.

I think a padawan is specifically an apprentice at the point in their training where they actually go out alongside a knight/master and take care of business. Anakin was too old to begin the training, as in he couldnt be one of those dumb kids doing the lightsaber training thing crammed together close with those other children.

The Star Wars card trader app has a new card that identifies the name of the creature the scavenger who took BB8 rode on. It's called a Luggabeast. I'm sure the novelization and further EU will have a really dumb species name for it.

I always thought it was stupid in the PT they decided that all Jedi wear robes all the time. Like, in ANH Obi Wan and Luke wore robes because they lived in a loving desert, not because that was the Jedi uniform. In fact it would have been really stupid of Obi Wan to be dressing like a goddamn Jedi if he was supposed to be in hiding. Notice how in ESB and ROTJ Luke just wears normal clothes.
