Exactly, that's why I asked that, the majority of people don't really understand encryption and don't realize what encrypting their phone will actually do or have an effect on. There is data at rest on your phone 100% of the time and IMO the standard model for data storage and transportation should be moving to (and is) encrypting by default. It's a good idea and only becomes a bad idea when there are significant performance hits. I would say the idea of "you only need privacy if you have something to hide" is a bad suggestion.

I don't have my phone encrypted. That said, encryption is a good idea simply because we know app makers are not good stewards with the data we provide them and often store that data in very bad ways that can be reverse engineered. It's moot anyways since current Google guidance requires encryption to be always on if the storage is fast enough.

Picked up a Motorola Moto E Second Gen, and its my first droid based phone. All is well so far except for one thing and that is apparently I am not able to store Apps/Games on SD card. I have tried a few "App 2 SD" type Apps, none of which seem to be able to move what I want moved(mainly games) so it seems like id need to do something like root or SDK hackery to get what I want from my searching.

If it's the phone's Bluetooth name you are concerned with, you can rename it under Settings > Bluetooth > (... menu) > Rename this Device

If you have that kind of access to the office router, see if you can set a custom name on the router's side. It SHOULD be just a custom device tag for humans so it shouldn't disrupt anything that depends on hostnames.

The factory rom will not change the menu if it detects it has been rooted. That said, I think this feature (changing your phone's hostname) is definitely worth installing a custom rom.

Just dropped my good old 1st gen Moto X on the pavement, and now the screen is fubar: black spots everywhere, can't read a drat thing anymore on the screen  So I was looking for a replacement, and since I'm cheap, in Europe, and a "pure" android fanboy, Motorola remains my goto brand (Sony and Nexus prices are ridiculous, might aswell buy an iPhone for those prices).Now I have a hard time deciding between several models: 3rd gen Moto G: + cheap and durable (ipx7) - slow processor and a - reportedely - weak camera 2nd gen Moto X + good processor, amoled screen and okay camera - previous gen, fragile, and low battery life Moto X Play: + good chipset, okay camera - expensive, design is meh, and the ip rating is "only" ip57 Plus, I learned that Lenovo is launching a Moto G Turbo that is even more durable (ip67), has a Snapdragon 615, and fast charging, but is only sold in India and Mexico with no word on international availability. Soooooo am I reading too much into the ip rating and the chipset? Would a Moto G be an upgrade to my old Moto X, or should I splurge on the Play, or import a weird phone from India? Or maybe look at another brand? Thanks in advance android thread!

With screens typically being sealed, that means the dust is not going to affect usability of the phone - the "5" in 57 means it lets dust in but not enough to impair any usage, and the "6" in "67" means it's dust-proof. The "7" means it can be dumped into 3 ft of water for 30 mins and not sufffer function loss. "Durability" (impact resilience) isn't measured in IP rating anymore, and hasn't been for like a decade.

My Moto X (2015) was updated to Marshmallow a week or so ago. Ever since then notifications for Gmail or other things come in at random times, like my phone not telling me I have mail but when I look at my computer I got an email hours ago. Then other times it works like it should, browser on my desktop tells me I have mail at the same time my phone does. I'm guessing this has something to do with Doze, correct?

Go to Settings -> Apps -> Settings -> Battery optimization, and set whatever apps you don't want to doze as "don't optimize."

Anyone know where the phone app search gets its contacts from? For whatever reason when I do a search it displays long deleted contacts and doubles that I do not have under the contact tab. I have the contacts app to 'display all' and everything is working correctly there.
