The more horrifying thing in that article is that Max Landis has adapted Douglas Adams.

Max Landis is actually cool when he doesn't get overly defensive. I liked pretty much everything he's put out so far and stuck his name to.

American Ultra was a fun indie mumblecore take on Metal Gear Solid, Chronicle was also really excellent, and his internet video short films are fantastically entertaining and engaging.

He has a strong sense of story structure and how to tinker and meddle with narrative arcs in interesting ways, he's clearly passionate as hell about everything he does, and his "arrogance" is tremendously overstated.

Clara has LITERAL character shields because she is functionally invincible and immortal. Meaning even if we ever did get to see hypothetical adventures of Clara Who, they'd be the most boring adventures in the world.

I see your point, but I think it's based on presumptions about what her state truly means. What if Clara must return to the Time Lords in the same state she was in when she left? If even a scratch could mean the end of the universe, she is not invincible. We simply don't know how it works. Even the Doctor didn't.

quote:

Clara being demonstratively the most important companion ever is not something she shares with any other companion. Unless there's something in the novels I never read.

That's kind of a tautology, isn't it. It's also overstating the importance of Name of the Doctor and Listen as far as moments go that define the Doctor. In Name of the Doctor, she specifically only enters the Doctor's time stream to stop the Great Intelligence from messing with him. If Clara is the most important companion because of that, then the Great Intelligence must be the most important villain now.

Listen is also really weird because Clara basically just quotes the Doctor's own words back at him:

DOCTOR: What's wrong with scared? Scared is a superpower. It's your superpower. There is danger in this room and guess what? It's you.

CLARA: Because didn't anybody ever tell you? Fear is a superpower. Fear can make you faster and cleverer and stronger. And one day, you're going to come back to this barn. And on that day you're going to be very afraid indeed. But that's okay. Because if you're very wise and very strong, fear doesn't have to make you cruel or cowardly. Fear can make you kind.

I guess the question is: Does the addition of "Fear makes you kind if you're wise and strong." really change anything about the Doctor? I'd argue that it really doesn't.

I feel like Doctor Who itself aims a bit CW these days. I don't mean that like I'm slagging it off or anything, but I reckon Moffat's been to enough NYCCs and SDCCs to know what the competition is and what big international audiences are going to be most receptive to. It's sort of hard to explain, but I think RTD's run felt "more BBC". Does that make sense? I'm not just talking about production values, but one thing he was really good at was making it feel down-to-earth. It's why a lot of his big, dramatic, climactic, up-to-eleven finales fell flat for me; he was better at wringing more drama out of something like the Doctor sending Rose back to the 21st century in "The Parting of the Ways" than he was at "FIVE MILLION CYBERMEN VS FIVE MILLION DALEKS". There was a kind of kitchen sink dimension to it that I don't think you really get with Moffat; by the same token, I think Moffat tries to do that but he's better when he's doing the "outer space fairy tale" thing.

Yeah I thought this was pretty good. It was 4 episodes on BBC 4, and starred Stephen Mangan. Some of it was filmed where I live, if I remember right.

If it takes a similar loose approach, which knowing Landis is quite likely, then it might be all right. I like the books a lot, but I don't really think they would work as straight adaptations. Would rather see people try new things with the premise and characters.

It could be just bad, though.

Finally got round to watching the Christmas special a couple of days ago. Quite liked it. Also Greg Davies as a giant megalomaniac space tyrant was inspired casting.

Also River revealing that she pinches the TARDIS quite often, and the Doctor doing the whole bigger on the inside reaction thing. And I'm glad Capaldi and Kingston finally got some scenes together in Doctor Who.

Yeah, my dislike of Clara has nothing to do with her being a woman. It's because she was a perky vacuum as the Impossible Girl, and then The Author's Favouritist Character EVER who was going to be the one to teach the new Doctor about life. Which was largely done by making Twelve a colossal bell-end cross between Cosmo Kramer and, well, Malcolm Tucker who had to be reminded not to poo poo in his own hands before meeting someone for the first time.

I'd say the primary thing was Sherlock's continuing realization that his relationship with John not only helps him deal with his own self-loathing/self-sabotage, but make him both a stronger and a better person and a more complete human being. They softened the edges around Holmes in season 3 but it did feel very much like it was happening on an intellectual level only, and I think the special helped to show that Holmes is actually genuinely improving as a human being rather than theorizing on it like an interesting thought-experiment: I feel like his wedding speech and his little game with Mycroft demonstrated that Holmes was still detached from the self-improvement he was supposedly undergoing.

Also I loved all the little nods to the classic ITV series visuals :allears:
