Who will win the greatest battle of them all?

Caught Ken Ishii play in LA last weekend and that party was stellar. Tons of good bookings around there and I'm kinda jealous of what they have going on.

I feel pretty blessed to have gotten to see him and DJ Nobu play in the same year. Some of these legendary Japanese DJ's never seem to go stateside.

I'm gonna be in Atlanta in March, are there any clubs there that book decent DJs? It doesn't have to be techno, house is fine too.

A friend who's been around Atlanta lately was just talking to me about this recently... not much in general, but some spots you could watch:

No one seems to be posting anything in this thread so I'm going to shitpost some nice music.
Recently got my tape of Exhumation from Under Molnet, a split by offworldcolonies and Rohr Sha: https://undermolnet.bandcamp.com/album/exhumation
Good minimal techno.
In the same vein but with more ambient stuff is the album June by Acronym: https://northernelectronics.bandcamp.com/album/june
It came out last summer but I still can't stop listening to it.

Has anyone listened to Boris Brejcha? He's kinda big in the local scene, saw him last Friday and thought it was pretty great. Around these parts they put him under "Minimal Techno" though he sounds very different to what uno.mannschaft posted above. Not sure what style he would fit in, or if there is anything similar.

I don't know if there's any specific genre attached to that style of music. When I said minimal techno in my post above I was thinking that it's techno and it's minimal, not that the sound of those records is representative of some genre called minimal techno. As for the tracks you posted they have got that Harthouse sound that incorporates elements from techno, house and trance. It reminds me of what Richie Hawtin plays in his sets, but I haven't got a good name for the style of music.

This album is excellent, thanks for posting, really been enjoying it. Not quite techno but the house/synth/electronica thread seems to be a bit lighter in general so seems to fit here.

i sort of scrubbed through that track so these are just general recommendations, if you want something more specific i'll give it a second listen. there's been a bunch of this stuff in the past few years especially as traditional dubstep more or less collapsed. post-dubstep i guess is what they called it but i always took that as a more all inclusive term for uk bass oriented dance music from 2009-2010 onward than just the techier stuff

some djs/producers would be ben ufo, blawan, martyn, pariah, 2562/a made up sound, cosmin trg, mosca, helix/dj vague, randomer, kowton, untold, laurel halo (sometimes), peverelist, hodge, pangaea, joy orbison, pearson sound, tessela... i would be remiss if i didn't mention scuba probably but i can't stand his music lol. and boddika too but he outed himself as a racist early on last year so i'm done with him forever.

labels are a little bit trickier because some of the labels these producers release on have their fingers in lots of pies. r&s puts out a ton of it, but they have had no distinct label identity since they rebooted it and it more or less exists as a side hustle to selling t-shirts with their logo on it these days. labels like tectonic and keysound are still nominally dubstep labels and focus on stuff oriented that way but do release some. the most reliable labels are ones like hessle audio, hinge finger, all caps, idle hands, whities, livity sound, 50weapons, 3024, hemlock... again, i suppose i should mention hotflush because while i don't like most of their releases they are still a big deal, and nonplus which has put out a lot of great stuff in the past (and probably continues to, i just don't buy them anymore)

the hessle audio show on rinse is the first/last word for newer music in this vein. ben ufo (who runs the label along with pangaea and pearson sound (and is legit the best dj in the world right now i might add)) is usually joined by pearson sound and sundry other guests to play 2 hours of music weekly (thursdays 4-6p est) the first half hour is generally kinda wanky, and he tends to play some of his esoteric finds but once it gets going its just nonstop heaters.

those reconstrvct parties seem cool but they're always absurdly expensive. like the upcoming one is $40? i realize it's new york and you can charge virtually whatever you want for anything and people will pay but when places like good room and bossa nova (and hell even output sometimes (also to say nothing of places like palisades and trans pecos that sometimes get good poo poo)) offer list/no cover w/rsvp i just can't legitimize it.

Yeah totally understand. I admit I'm good friends with people deeply involved in Reconstrvct so that as well as how they don't give a gently caress as far as "risky bookings" are why I'm fine with it. Plus I can't think of a system I like more than Tsunami's in the USA.

Gotta make it up to Bunker NYC's parties too though.

Agreed. I just prefer Tsunami's engineering on their Labhorns over the way most Funktion One systems are tuned. Here's my favorite American clubs based purely on sound (U Hall has Martin Audio while the rest have Funktion One):
1. Flash, DC
2. Smart Bar, Chicago
3. Cielo, NYC
4. U Street Music Hall, DC
5. tie: Output, NYC and Beta, Denver
6. Q, Seattle
7. Vulcan Gas Company, Austin

What do you think about the latest Surgeon album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68Kc6hxZ96I)? My take is that it starts of hot as hell but halfway through my ears get really tired and it sounds more like someone farting in my ears. Maybe I'm getting old but I would have preferred if he broke up those really intense soundscapes with some small drony stuff for a minute or two.

Any reccos in the vein of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wlfneBB0xM (Len Faki & Johannes Heil - "Maniac")??

I've been digging through some of Niereich's old podcasts & while there is lots to love there, this one really caught me. Deep, noodly business that's still dance floor friendly.

I've been out of the scene since '97, so I'm absolutely clueless about labels/artists now.

if you've been out of the game for that long and you're interested in contemporary berghain-y techno i would just skip to 2005 (not to downplay the importance of 1998-2004 ofc, lots of records released in that time period are hugely influential). ostgut ton, berghain/pbar's in-house label was founded in 2005, and sandwell district was "revived" in 2005 (after regis & female put out a few records under the imprint in the early 2000s) when regis started collaborating more heavily with north americans function, silent servant, and rrose. these two sort of pointed the direction for a lot of contemporary stuff

others would be like... figure (naturally, len faki's label), mdr, klockworks, dystopian, token, avian, semantica, clr, ilian tape, deeply rooted, power vacuum, m_rec, mord, pole group. probably more i'm forgetting

resident advisor podcast is a good place to start for mixes, most of the djs/producers we're talking about have done one. they reupped their archive in honor of 500 so they're all available on mixcloud. fact mag mixes too, although those can be more hit and miss, in my experience. if you want me to get more specific about recommendations i can

from there i would just check mixes.db and pick and choose based on the djs you enjoy... mix cds have sort of gone the way of the buffalo because of podcasting but fabric's mix cd series is generally good for this sort of thing (their fabriclive series too, but it's more all over the place than straight house and techno as the fabric series tends to be), and dj kicks still exists. oh and berghain/pbar have their own mix series' for residents.
