I think this is the start of him trying to develop new relationships. He knows he needs to try and move on from the toxic relationships he's involved in now, but he only knows one way to do it. Basically the Nightmare Knight is a super rich dad who only knows how to interact with his kids by throwing money at them, and he makes that money by terrorizing the countryside.
