This game has a very lame checkpoint system. I have done something similar to myself like 5 times now. Last time I walked around the forests for like an hour before getting wrekt by a chimaera and I hadn't saved since I last left Gran Soren.

the save/quit menu has a save and continue option, which isn't 100% reliable but it helps. the menu shouldn't be called save/quit

i think when you get attacked by wolves there's a big wolf that howls to summon more wolves and you have to kill the big one to stop the infinite spawning, but that's just a guess.
