I never got into car video games until hard Drivin' hit the arcades.

Then I pumped every quarter I earned for like 5 years into that drat thing. But never the stunt course. I took the speed course because you don't jump a Ferrari, you unleash that V12 in some polygonal city consisting of three buildings!

I'm relatively young, so my first driving games were IndyCar Racing 2, NFS:SE, Test Drive Offroad, and San Francisco Rush. Oh and a lot of Road Rash of course.

I may actually be able to make it for Goon Corsa. I do have things to do later in the day but I'd probably get kicked early for crashing too much anyways. :v:

I would poo poo myself if I could give this to my Dad (when he was alive) and him appreciate it. That is really cool. I did get him on .. I think I had the Logitech Momo Force at the time and he did remark 'wow, that's no game! it's real!' :D

As much at it owned for strapping sports cars and getting speeding tickets, the actual driving was better in the Papyrus games (obviously, where NASCAR and now iRacing comes from). Still a complete classic. I've got an Amiga emulator for PC now, all the games as disk files, so like a file for each disk with a .adf extension or something and basically my whole Amiga with a zillion games all fit into 100 meg or something. It's awesome, it emulates the disk noises and puts them over speakers, I played a ton of Cannon Fodder and through the whole season of Speedball 2. Lemmings still rocks.

It Came from the Desert is still spooky and engaging even decades later.

Making my way through the thread, but thought I'd ask.

Any guides to setting up wheels/pedals on a desk? The wheel/shifter was ok for the most part, but I couldn't get comfortable with the pedals position, and since I drive a motorcycle I'm not sure how much of that is my lack of familiarity with it or the fact that I had placed the pedals too close/far from myself (again, since I don't know cars).
Oh, I have a (borrowed) G25 if that changes anything.

GhostDog

I also found the pedals problematic when I was still using an office desk. I was sitting too high to have my feet on the pedals in a somewhat relaxed position at "idle", instead I had to pull my feet back/up the whole time. You want to sit low with a shallow angle in your knee. You know, like in a race car :)

My brother and I played a game like that on Atari 800, though the name escapes me. You could use different types of vehicles (pickups, motorcycles, etc.) and I think you could drop bombs behind you, and I'd piss off my brother by dropping mine under me at the start of the race and blowing myself up.

Yeah, this video demonstrates everything that is rubbish about the Codemasters F1 games and why I don't own them or play them (I own a couple of older ones like 2011 and 2012) despite being a huge F1 fan.

Crap AI, he blows them away at the start with some ridiculous advantage then passes like 20 cars into corner one. Sure it's probably on easy or something, but still, ugh how boring. The handling looks console-like, you can see how the wheel is turning and it looks like a controller (lack of finesse and fine movements, like it's all being transmitted through molasses). Turn off the damage in an F1 game (seriously? failures and contact between exceptionally fragile cars are half of the sport and you turn all that off?! so it's V8 supercars with F1 cars.. man) and even with the damage on it's bumper cars and just hitting the next guy is preferable to coming off the throttle.

Literally the Microprose games had more depth in the actual racing. Just like so many modern movies, all the CG glitz and glamour and none of the substance.

Reminder: Assetto Corsa today, 20:00 GMT:
- Zandvoort, DTM, Dream Pack 1 required
- 20 min training, 10 min qualifying, 30 min race
- track starts green, grip level carries over between sessions
- seems like I can only allow ABS and TC if the car has it (the settings are FORCED, DENIED, FACTORY)
- 50% damage

What's the opinion on tire wear and selection? Force the same tire on everyone?

The driving part is really good in Pcars. I don't use a controller but I've heard the default config is pretty bad and you'll end up searching around online for a controller setup that works well.

Everything else about the game is kind of a headache. A lot of stock tunes are complete poo poo. Tuning, using a tune, or selecting tire compound is kind of cryptic.. it's all there but just doesn't feel fleshed out into a coherent system.

But again once you're driving you forget about all that and it's a heap of fun.

If you're going to use a controller you've basically got 2 options. Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed (it's simmy, it's not a typical need for speed game) or Project Cars. Project cars takes a LONG time to get the controls dialed in to be usable but once you do it's pretty good. All the other PC sims are designed with wheels in mind and any other control schemes are tacked on as an afterthought.

I do quite well in LFS and Dirt Rally with a pad. iRacing seemed impossible, but if you're spending that much on a game you may as well splurge for a wheel.
