I suggested undertale to my sister, and she heard it and thought it was "undertail", so she googled that and it's just tons of porn of this one and the fish guard lady doing each other

I remember being really underwhelmed by undertale after a while

It was fun and whimsical while I was playing it but ultimately it feels like the people who are dickriding it really hard have never played earthbound or even one of the edgy spinoff gamemaker games inspired by it like off or lisa or w/e

it was too short for me to really give a poo poo about any of the characters apart from the skeletons and the robot and when you get a choice to kill a boss you met like two minutes ago for the first time it's not really a meaningful or particularly emotional decision

I've only done the neutral route though. The gameplay was good but already this is like new homestuck in terms or repellent fan base

i played through the neutral run, and didn't care enough to start all over and go through killing no one as it was already a slog while gaining xp. i don't like bullet hells. so i quit there.

my sister otoh wanted to get the "best" ending so she and i played it together, me doing tthe bullet hells and her doing the story and walkiung back and forth to buy 10000x hot dogs to survive the battles. and admittedly the pacificst "ending" (really an extra 50% of the game, wtf) was better and filled in a lot of the story. but it seems kind of weird to lock that away from the people who didn't realize that the flower saying "maybe you could do it again without killing anyone!" is actually "you have to do this to get a crapload more game content" and not just an ng+ thing to earn a cheevo, which is what i originally thought it would be.

i dunno...it probably just wasnt really made for me

huh

I started the game again and tried to do a pacifist run but got really bored by the time I got past the fish lady b/c the game gets pretty transparent on a second run through and basically nothing changed so far except some new dialogue

if there's that much more to it I'll keep going I guess but this seems a stupid way to do something like this. how are you supposed to figure out there's a whole shitload more content w/o someone telling you about it

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

there's more content but it doesn't start until very late in the game. if you've beaten it once, then somewhere in the lava world you will get a new encounter that starts the new content. if you haven't beaten it yet, you have to beat the game first, then backtrack to the lava world.

it's really not a very good gameplay choice but it's the kind of unintuituve "secret" thing that's like crack to video game completionists so obviously spergs love it

theres even more content and backstory if you do a third run and kill everything, then beat the game again with the pacifist ending.

i think a lot of undertale's praise comes from two camps: people who know the lexicon of game development/design and people who have just discovered said lexicon. it's rather clever in its mechanics and has a strong narrative behind it.

the closest parallel i'm willing to draw is probably the original metal gear solid in terms of the enthusiasm surrounding it and clever use of game mechanics and narrative. the specific mechanics that cause the enthusiastic reactions in both games require some level of fluency with video games; it's ultimately additive towards the experience. the retrospective on undertale should be interesting and hopefully it won't be entirely dismissive.

another point in undertale's favor is that the price point is spot on for the breadth and flexibility of the game's scope. want to breeze through it to see what the big deal is? $10 for ~6 hours isn't too bad. want to completely disassemble the game and reverse engineer the narrative? $10 for 20-30 hours is a good value proposition.

you're talking about the grammar of video game mechanics.

i really think there should be a basic sandbox game dedicated to teaching that grammar to people who have never played more complex games because if you're not used to it already it can all be pretty loving opaque

idk about undertale but that's one thing I learned from playing videogames with my exgirlfriend, there are a lot of things that I have grokked from more than two decades of playing video games that are completely foreign

a friend of mine is doing the same right now and even basic ideas like "red barrels go boom" aren't really obvious to people who haven't wasted their lives. more complex things like level design are even more difficult - I can figure out where to go and how to advance just from the way a level is laid out and where different items and enemies are placed, but that's not obvious if you're not familiar with the grammar

the constant pop ups in assassin's creed 4 about what barrels do and what synchronizing is are annoying but I can see how they'd be helpful
