~15 miles is probably the longest. The most tiring, by far, was doing The Narrows bottom-up to Big Springs including the Orderville Canyon side trip. 11ish miles wading up and down a river.

25 miles, found some train tracks during a midnight(ish) walk, ended up being over an 8 hour walk. Ended up finding a train eventually, which was my initial goal. Climbed on top and smoked my pipe as I watched the sunrise. That night I saw three shooting stars from the top of that train while watching the sunrise. Came home with a cool looking sign that I found on the way back, riddled with shotgun pellets. I had previously updated my roommates and friends on how I was doing via video, which apparently people for some reason thought I was on a moving train. So that became how they told the story of my cool sign. I stole it after riding on top of a moving train. It was a fun night. I also listened to what sounded like a bird being eaten, or maybe it was just hurt. When I came home at around 8-9AM, an exterminator came knocking not even 5 minutes after I arrived telling us they were fumigating our dormroom so we had to leave.Ended up being horrible timing, I really just wanted to sleep at that point.

I think I did about 17 miles in the slot canyons at Buckskin Gulch, that hiking was boring and long, while being beautiful I guess... I much prefer forests to desert but they both have their charm.

I walked about 20 miles all over Seattle with my friend while we were exploring the city. We ended up not taking the bus anywhere because taking the bus is really expensive to the point you'd really only want to do it for long distances.

One day, because I was mad at my grandmother because she didn't like my hat. I've also had a lot of days where I easily clocked in 10+ miles, just walking around Portland. The miles seem to fall away like that!

When I was 10 or so my dad and I hiked/jogged 17 miles in Yellowstone because we failed at navigating and the 5 mile half-day hike we planned turned out to be 3 times longer. Made it to some lodge by dusk and I ate the biggest steak I'd seen in my life to that point. That's not the longest day I've ever done now but it was certainly the biggest considering my age at the time.

I hiked parts the Shikoku henro trail last year, and the longest track I walked was probably from Nagao-ji in Sanuki City, through Okubo-ji, via climbing over the summit of Nyotai-san (800m elevation with a few short near-vertical sections), crossing over the prefectural divider from Kagawa Prefecture into Tokushima Prefecture, to Kirihata-ji temple and from there to Awa-Kawashima train station. Roughly 38 kilometers, with a pack.

My wife and I did a 53km, (33 mile) day on the Camino de Santiago. It was from Melide to Santiago so we were 850km through by that point and were pretty accustomed to long walking days. I'm doing the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km in Melbourne in about a month so that will be fun, a fair few hills but no heavy packs on that one though, my pack on the Camino was around 15kg. We're aiming for 20 hours.

Back when I was 15ish i went to an event in Ottawa in some park in the middle of the city. I was supposed to come home by bus but I was an impatient teenager and decided to walk from bus stop to bus stop 'til my bus arrives. Back then i didn't know the city, didn't know the bus schedules and was too proud to admit my ignorance or possibility of me getting lost. (This was back when cellphones were a thing for rich people and smartphones did not exist). What you're probably expecting by now happened. I ended up lost and had no idea where I was or where to go. In my brillance, I decided to just keep on walking figuring I'd have to end up home somehow. (To this day, I am still unsure of how I came to this conclusion). About 40 kilometers later (according to Googlemap) I arrived in the nearby city of Hull at their casino. The casino was familiar and I could finally figure out where I was, which was still very far from where i lived. That's when I gave up and did what any reasonable teenager would do: I called my mommy and begged for a ride.

I once walked about 18 miles through the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine in a day. Our map denoted a shelter that we expected to reach around 5:30 or 6:00 pm; only once we got there, no shelter or campsite was to be found. Since it was getting dark and starting to rain, we decided there was no other option but to keep walking to the next campsite which was several more miles down the trail. It's amazing how much more energy you can find deep in the recesses of your body when you're faced with having to spend the night in the mud trying to sleep on a bunch of roots and rocks.

When I was a Hotshot, we would usually average 20-40 miles a day, over about 16 hours a day. that's with line gear so flame-resistant clothing, 35-55 pound pack, tool and whatever other gear, sometimes 5 gallon jerry cans and water bags. Terrain was generally extremely varied, here's a pretty good example from Idaho: I also ran/scrambled down and up the South Rim of the Grand Canyon which i think was like 18 or 19 miles total with some pretty good elevation gain. ~How to Avoid Blisters~ Just don't bother. Lance them if they're interfering with your walking, and clean them with antiseptic every day once they pop so you don't end up with blood poisoning and black foot. I knew one guy who swore by slicing them open and stuffing them with the extra-menthol Goldbond but I wouldn't recommend that. Smartwool socks are a good investment but they only do so much, your feet are gonna get shredded sooner or later anyway, and eventually they'll just be one gnarly lump of scarred leather that won't feel anything. I haven't gotten a blister in years. I have, however, lost 2 toenails and 1 fingernail, and suffered a bout of trench foot in Alaska. black children fucked around with this message at 15:27 on Mar 11, 2016 |
