Jesus, one whiff of Latter-Day LF's stylesheet and we're off to the races. Let's at least try to rein in the semi-ironic faux-socialist posturing in this, the thread about laughing at the Republican primary.

We've still got one debate left for Cruz to try and recover from the slams he's taking, which haven't even stopped coming yet if that Glenn Beck thing turns into "Cruz and Beck roll out the welcome mat for illegals". Does Cruz even have any fresh attacks he can make now that his last wave have been blown out of the media cycle by Palin, or will he be playing pure defense? And when are we slated to hear more about the next debate's lineup?

If Cruz and Trump are a lock for the top two positions in Iowa, how important will coming in third there be for all the establishment wannabes trying to build momentum for New Hampshire? Would, say, Rubio placing third in one and second in the other be enough to keep him in the race?

i wish cruz or someone would just start baiting trump in the ways everyone knows get him bothered. talk poo poo about trump steaks, praise mothers who breastfeed, call his hats cheap and tacky. it's all petty poo poo, but petty poo poo is the only thing that affects donald because positions and policies don't work anymore. no one apparently cares that he was actually pretty progressive before 2000, but it'd be a lot more effective if he starts melting down over minor poo poo. also, i just want to watch it on youtube.

Trump was never a progressive figure, he was a millionaire libertine who only supported liberal politics insofar as they catered to his personal interests. What he's always been is a short-fingered vulgarian, who employed the slimiest tactics when it came to building up his overhyped real estate empire.

Between Branstad hexing him, and Palin snubbing him, Cruz needs to win back the media spotlight asap. The best thing for Cruz right now is if he scores big in new polls, or Trump falters. According to Reuters tracking Trump has lost 6 points since the debate, while Cruz has gained 1...
http://polling.reuters.com/#poll/TR130/filters/PARTY_ID_:2/dates/20160114-20160119/type/day

I know not the best poll, but sort of backs up what we've heard from our pollster friend.

Also I think Cruz needs to play offensive regardless of the damage Palin did today. The entire thrust of Cruz's attack was "Donald Trump isn't a real conservative". Sarah Palin endorsing Trump gives him an ideological shield that protects him from attack.

Cruz needs to get out there and go on every talk radio show and say some crazy poo poo to get attention. Another way he can do that is to unleash his own A-list endorsement... If Glenn Beck is all he has then... Welp.

his figurative end of the world bullshit turned into literal end of the world bullshit and he got a bit too Alex Jonesy for fox audiences and sponsors.

as far as I know he held on to his radio audience, seeing as talk radio audiences have a pretty high tolerance for crazy, and he runs a (fairly successful?) online media thing at the blaze.

The staggering bit of all of this is that you've got huge populations of people, who are a hair's breadth from being transient themselves, picking up and moving to oilfield areas over the past several years. If the companies that make it possible for them to live there just dry up and lay them all off, you've got parts of states getting hit with concentrated blasts of rust belt malaise plus the added bonus of those areas already having a good bit of drug/alcohol abuse going on.

Waves of shitkicker rig workers with no family for two time zones suddenly needing to make rent and nobody's hiring in the only thing around that might be called a town. Oh, and they ran out of meth or pills or hooch or whatever last week. At least the guys in the steel mills were more likely to have families to move back in with and a town where they could maybe find some odd jobs to get food on the table. Oil people live half their lives in company trailers and the other half in whatever's affordable after child support, food, booze, and other vices. When that industry goes, things are going to get really weird for a lot of people who think only black people can be "junkies."

I work in the oilfield, and it's already far, far worse than people outside it seem to think. My company's already laid off 75% of the workforce in my part of the country, which has low(er) costs to produce and is a hundred miles from a major port. Those layoffs happened when the price was in the $40s, right now people are freaking the gently caress out, I know tens of senior managers who've been laid off already. Even a few people who were on the fast-track to high-level management positions in the company are being axed without warning. There've been thousands of layoffs just in my region, maybe tens of thousands, and now companies are talking about cutting the rest of their operations altogether. The atmosphere has slowly degraded from disbelief to fear to outright panic.

And yes, you have no idea. It's a workforce predominately comprised of felons, drug addicts, drunks, rednecks, and other scum and villainy. I'm a Sanderista and they're mostly Trumpers, but we band together to hate on Hillary/Jeb so we all get along just fine. We find common ground on their populist platforms, and ignore the fascist/socialist underbellies of each others' candidates.

I've been trying to get out since October. No luck. :smithicide:

I agree with Montasque about the Cruz stuff. As for Rubio/other establishment candidates, I think a 3rd in Iowa and a 2nd in New Hampshire would be enough to stay in the race for sure. The problem is, with such a crowded field, that might actually be really difficult. If the polls are to be believed (and they might be wrong), Kasich is doing really well in New Hampshire and Bush/Christie aren't doing that bad either. If, say, Rubio places 3rd in Iowa and one of these other establishment candidates places 2nd in New Hampshire, it would probably prolong the contest between establishment candidates. That would make it harder for support to consolidate around one of them, and continuing to split establishment support would leave Trump/Cruz in a pretty good position going forward. I still think that one of the establishment candidates will take the nomination, but when Scott Walker dropped out and urged other candidates to do the same in order to find someone to rally around against Trump it was probably one of the smarter things he said/did. But egos like these...

Between Branstad and Palin, Cruz took a hell of a beating yesterday. I'm interested to see what he does today, especially since his main line against Trump ("he's not a REAL conservative") has been so deftly parried.
