I tried to welcome him to the forums long, long before he went nuts and started stalking people and I still regret that he never stuck around and mellowed out. In fact, out of respect for gryphon I still won't use his real name, unlike Citizen_idgafaboutthosenumbersinwhatsprobablyathrowawayredditaccount. People only dug up his name because he was stalking Beer4theBeerGod and even then I wasn't comfortable with digging up info, even on an internet stalker, especially since it seemed like he was in a bad place. If he wants to take the position that what happened to gryphon0468 was wrong, I'll agree with him. I don't approve of either gryphon's actions re: stalking nor of the vigilante internet justice doled out against him. But if he wants to take that hill to die on as some sort of SC redditor moral high ground against the people who post here rather than there, well, I won't necessarily say it's funny per se but I'll point out that it's an odd place to make a last stand. Put in OP please. A good roundup of how the SC community behaves.

I don't get reddit. The website is loving poorly laid out and unnecessarily difficult to maneuver. Completely separate from that the userbase in many of the subreddits seems to be really, really... dumb? I mean, the level to which they cannot understand that they are being baited or that people can think that others being "serious business" about SC is funny is just... sad. I don't want to do what they are doing and paint all people there with the same brush, because clearly there are probably good and/or useful communities on that website but geez they make it hard to find or access. Also how does reddit karma work because my account has like -400 or something after making about 10 posts or so ever.

We must have some more respect for the art of pubes defoliation.quote:My night began as any other normal weeknight. Come home, fix dinner, and play with the kids. I then had the thought that would ring painfully in my mind for the next few hours: ‘Maybe I should pull the waxing kit out of the medicine cabinet.’ So I headed to the site of my demise: the bathroom. It was one of those ‘cold wax’ kits. No melting a clump of hot wax, you just rub the strips together in your hand, they get warm and you peel them apart and press them to your leg (or wherever else) and you pull the hair right off. No mess, no fuss. How hard can it be? I mean, I’m not a genius, but I am mechanically inclined enough to figure this out. (YA THINK!?!) So I pull one of the thin strips out. Its two strips facing each other stuck together. Instead of rubbing them together, my genius kicks in so I get out the hair dryer and heat it to 1000 degrees. (‘Cold wax,’ yeah…right!) I lay the strip across my thigh. Hold the skin around it tight and pull. It works! OK, so it wasn’t the best feeling, but it wasn’t too bad. I can do this! Hair removal no longer eludes me! I am She-rah, fighter of all wayward body hair and maker of smooth skin extraordinaire. With my next wax strip I move north after checking on the kids, I sneak back into the bathroom, for the ultimate hair fighting championship. I drop my panties and place one foot on the toilet. Using the same procedure, I apply the wax strip across the right side of my bikini line, covering the right half of my hoo-ha and stretching down to the inside of my butt cheek (it was a long strip) .. I inhale deeply and brace myself…RRRRIIIPPP!!!! I’m blind!!! Blinded from pain!!!!….OH MY GAWD!!!!!!!!! Vision returning, I notice that I’ve only managed to pull off half the strip. CRAP! Another deep breath and RIPP! Everything is spinning and spotted. I think I may pass out…must stay conscious…must stay conscious. Do I hear crashing drums??? Breathe, breathe…OK, back to normal. I want to see my trophy – a wax covered strip, the one that has caused me so much pain, with my hairy pelt sticking to it. I want to revel in the glory that is my triumph over body hair. I hold up the strip! There’s no hair on it. Where is the hair??? WHERE IS THE WAX??? Slowly I ease my head down, foot still perched on the toilet. I see the hair. The hair that should be on the strip…it’s not! I touch. .. I am touching wax!! I run my fingers over the most sensitive part of my body, which is now covered in cold wax and matted hair. Then I make the next BIG mistake…remember my foot is still propped upon the toilet? I know I need to do something. So I put my foot down. Sealed shut! My butt is sealed shut. Sealed shut! I penguin walk around the bathroom trying to figure out what to do and think to myself ‘Please don’t let me get the urge to poop. My head may pop off!’ What can I do to melt the wax? Hot water!! Hot water melts wax!! I’ll run the hottest water I can stand into the bathtub, get in, immerse the wax-covered bits and the wax should melt and I can gently wipe it off, right??? *WRONG!!!!!!!* I get in the tub – the water is slightly hotter than that used to torture prisoners of war or sterilize surgical equipment – I sit. Now, the only thing worse than having your nether regions glued together, is having them glued together and then glued to the bottom of the tub…in scalding hot water. Which, by the way, doesn’t melt cold wax. So, now I’m stuck to the bottom of the tub as though I had cemented myself to the porcelain!! God bless the man who had convinced me a few months ago to have a phone put in the bathroom!!!!! I call my friend, thinking surely she has waxed before and has some secret of how to get me undone. It’s a very good conversation starter ‘So, my butt and hoo-ha are glued together to the bottom of the tub!’ There is a slight pause. She doesn’t know any secret tricks for removal but she does try to hide her laughter from me. She wants to know exactly where the wax is located, ‘Are we talking cheeks or hole or hoo-ha?’ She’s laughing out loud by now…I can hear her. I give her the rundown and she suggests I call the number on the side of the box. YEAH!!!!! Right!! I should be the joke of someone else’s night. While we go through various solutions, I resort to trying to scrape the wax off with a razor. Nothing feels better than to have your girlie goodies covered in hot wax, glued shut, stuck to the tub in super hot water and then dry-shaving the sticky wax off!! By now the brain is not working, dignity has taken a major hike and I’m pretty sure I’m going to need Post-Traumatic Stress counseling for this event. My friend is still talking with me when I finally see my saving grace….the lotion they give you to remove the excess wax. What do I really have to lose at this point? I rub some on and … OH MY GAWD!!!!!!! The scream probably woke the kids and scared the dickens out of my friend. Its sooo painful, but I really don’t care. ‘IT WORKS!! It works!!’ I get a hearty congratulation from my friend and she hangs up. I successfully remove the remainder of the wax and then notice to my grief and despair…? THE HAIR IS STILL HERE…….ALL OF IT! So I recklessly shave it off. Heck, I’m numb by now. Nothing hurts. I could have amputated my own leg at this point. Next week I’m going to try hair color…… http://imgur.com/gallery/C4W8M

Elite could use a bit more design variety, but I generally agree with the idea of a consistent design, so I can't fault their conservative attitude in that department. The ships in Star Citizen all look like they were designed by different people working in different companies on totally different kinds of games, then all thrown together in the same space. Even franchises that offered many different kinds of ships (Babylon 5, Star Trek, Star Wars) still had an overall feeling of those ships being from the same universe. SC suffers very badly from that inconsistency, and it's everywhere you look, right down to the soda machines which are perfectly logical in a place where you can't take off your helmet. Even the space station itself is a mess of contrived ideas pasted together into a non-cohesive whole.

I found Elite's designs boring as hell (besides a few exceptions like the Imperial Clipper).

you don't need "realism" in a space sim, having one shield for the whole ship is exactly as plausible as having six this is dumb even by the standards

So do you just target one shield generator subsystem or do you have to hit 6? It might be easier to just EVA and hijack the ship since I'm assuming they haven't engineered shields to detect player characters yet. Edit: Actually if they did and it launched you I would probably buy the game in 3 years after Gearbox comes in to rush it out the door.

Apparently its a very large and heavy ship that somehow uses 6 very light shields. What real benefit this has over a large single shield I dont think anyone knows.Scruffpuff posted:I'm trying to think of how 1 shield at 6x power would be, from a gameplay perspective, different than 6 shields at 1x power. I'm sure the engineers are thinking the same thing which is why they did this quick fix and wished they could leave it like that instead of having the perpetual fear of roberts nixing them because they didnt code the 6 different shields in the ship doing group work or whatever. I'm trying to think of how 1 shield at 6x power would be, from a gameplay perspective, different than 6 shields at 1x power. Harking back to a fun space combat game that existed and was real, X-Wing, I remember managing shields actually being a core, fun part of gameplay (this is something I have to knock against Elite, where shield management is a bit more dull). You had layers of directional shielding, and not only could you dynamically allocate power to different subsystems (engines, shields, weapons), you could shunt capacitor power directly between systems. (Although it wasn't balanced properly to be honest - it was always faster to bring up your shields by putting full power to weapons and shunting that power over to shields, than it was to put full power to shields directly - a minor quibble.) The cool part was you could also manage what direction you concentrated that shield power. If you were getting hammered from behind (a feeling Citizens should know pretty well by this point) you could just move all available shield power to the rear deflectors, and get extra layers there at the expense of other parts of the ship. Shield management in that game was just so on point - and this was in 1993! If Star Citizen had a system with at least that much depth, then I could theoretically see players in a multicrew ship doing nothing but shield management as a minigame. That said, most of us managed that in 1993 while also flying the ship and engaging in combat at the same time, so not sure how engaging it would be in the long term.

I'm just saying, if shields deflected players and you could knock people off landing pads like ping pong paddles or wait for them to eject and then ram them and send them flying it would be a core gameplay mechanic that could sustain me for weeks.
