It's going to depend a lot upon what you do, obviously. Last winter I probably did about 80,000 miles between November and March and I was also gone for all but maybe one week a month. With my job as a field engineer I'm gone anywhere from a couple of days to more than a month depending upon the project.

Speaking of which, does anyone happen to know how far back Star Alliance airlines will let you retroactively claim miles? Almost all of my miles mentioned above were on Lufthansa/SAS/United and I very stupidly never bothered to sign up for rewards at any point when I was regularly doing 12kmi round trips.

I've gone back a year. I think they're good for longer. You'll have to provide a ticket number or other data, check your old boarding passes.

Bah, looks like it's six months max on all three airlines (United lets you go back a year, but only if you had a membership at the time of the flight). :(

I'll do anywhere from 1 day to three months. So at the end of the year I can have spent 4-5 months traveling and still struggle to get silver on Delta.

I am a Consultant and travel domestically on average 1 week a month. Usually in 1 week intervals so my airline status is pretty much non-existant (Delta was my top airline at 14k miles last year). Also I am convinced that Concur is an ancient and evil curse placed upon unlucky corporate travelers.

As a side note, any general consensus on which airline has the best low level status (in case I actually get lucky and make *gasp* Silver! or something). I don't have the ability to stick to one airline all the time (have to stay within $100 of the "Least Cost" option) but I can usually finagle the overwhelming majority onto Delta so far (I fly out of IAH to pretty much anywhere domestic)

Just get an airline credit card and global entry / pre check and you'll be nearly there to low level status before earning a mile

I think the only thing it gets you above precheck and having the gold/plat card is that you can pick the preferred (dark blue) seats whenever you want. You don't get Sky Priority for your bags, or SKY zone boarding. It's dumb. Maybe you can get the occasional upgrade on routes that no one else ever takes, but I never got upgraded once as a FO. Even as gold I think I never got higher than 10-15 on the list since 90% of my flights go through ATL.

Truth. But I do 90% of my flying between LAX and SJC, and I can't remember the last time I wasn't upgraded. I have Pre-Check, so it doesn't do anything but get me a drink and a bigger seat for 50 minutes. But they are both free, so here we are.

I got upgraded on a couple of sub-500 mile RJ flights, and once on MEM-LAS at the gate. I had a bit better luck with AA's lowest tier, but this was several years ago so YMMV.

3 years ago I was an FO and got upgraded JFK-LAX - my first and only upgrade on that route (even as a PM/DM). It was the night of the Super Bowl.

My ORD-CLT leg was cancelled tomorrow (originally ORD-CLT-MCO), AA thought a good idea would be to put me ORD-LAX-MCO a full 24 hours later.

Corporate travel department got me ORD-ATL-MCO on DL after an hour on hold, but I'm only getting in an hour later than normal so no worries.

I was sort of looking forward to another night in Chicago (and another $75 per diem and adding to my AA platinum challenge)

Is everyone in this thread a consultant/in IT of some kind staying put in a hotel for work M-Th? Or is it more diverse? Based on what I've read in here, my company is pretty lenient with travel stuff.

I'm a field engineer for an electrical testing & maintenance company. The majority of our business is within the Colorado Springs to Cheyenne corridor (we're based out of Denver), but our service area includes all of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and both Dakotas; and parts of New Mexico, Kansas and Nebraska. International/Hawai'i projects pop up from time to time, and then we also have offices scattered throughout the country that occasionally need to borrow labor. I generally only fly in the latter two cases, otherwise we almost always drive when we're doing work within our service area.

I work for a ginormous financial institution on the IT side and the vast majority of my travel is personal/leisure, but I did manage to get into a special project that has me consulting with a ginormous financial institution in China about once per quarter. And ginormous financial institutions tend to have travel policies that say international travel is in business class, so that helps significantly with my personal travel. Normally I would have very little work travel, maybe once in a while to NYC or Boston but not frequently by any stretch, so it's been a cool opportunity.

Did the strategy consultant thing for a few years, humping across the US on a M/Th schedule, then changed jobs and didn't travel at all. Now doing management for a company manufacturing in Asia and selling in Europe, so fewer but longer trips.

I work for the federal government, the vast majority of my travel is international. Point earning is extremely hit or miss for me due to the way hotels are billed/paid and the super low contract fares on the airlines.

I had plat in graduate school doing the long distance thing for a semester. I remember going up in shorts and a tshirt to get standby on the first flight of the day, getting the "the list is full no way you'll make it no reason to add you", dropped my ticket and asked can you try anyway and receiving a ticket right back. A buddy of mine is a Global Services agent at SFO; he was recently manning the Global First Lounge entry desk where the LH staff brought a LH HON over (for those unfamiliar, HON is a crazy high status with LH that makes Global Services look like a mere silver) which, because the LH HON was not flying UA metal, didn't get access. The guy then brought out his Global Services card and asked if that would work instead.

As much as I love traveling, I don't think I'd want to do it often enough to qualify for both GS and HON. That's nuts.

Yeah, as per story, I just asked if she could try anyway while putting my ticket on the counter. Wasn't trumping status, but wanted to make sure she actually, you know, tried.

I personally am very happy to have more technology in the process. I'd rather just do that standby, or change my seat, or whatever from my phone. I've had surely gate agents bitch about changing my seat last second on a transcon cause they were trying to put their buddy flying standby into that exit row seat. Just let me handle that with my personal device.

My current travel bitch, the pre check move from FF status to GE payment. Way more occasional travelers in the pre check lane these days. That lane is supposed to hustle dammit.
