So here's a real naive question: what's up with the lack of legitimate ways to purchase a lot of this music in the US? What prevents a label like Warner Japan from just throwing some stuff up on US iTunes/Amazon? I hate that the options for listening to a lot of this music seem to boil down to "import a CD for $60" or "find a Sendspace link on a sketchy Blogspot." At least if more of these bands released vinyl I would feel good about buying physical versions of this stuff.

What prevents a label like Warner Japan from just throwing some stuff up on US iTunes/Amazon? I know that anti-piracy laws in Japan are pretty strict, and that coupled with scant social media presence can make it hard to find out if a band is still active or releasing anything, but it's a mystery to me why they don't like digital distribution. I know that the "Japanese bonus track" thing that so many non-Japanese bands do tends to be a reward to Japanese fans since CDs are more expensive there, and since they buy physical copies a lot, but that doesn't really explain why that situation arose. Really my only guess is that their internet is stuck in the 90s in that regard. Which isn't unprecedented if you look at how archaic their version of YouTube is, or know how slow game developers there are to embrace digital distribution. And with their traditionalist attitudes, I assume the prevailing sentiment is "if it works, why fix it ".

One of the bigger reasons why they don't like digital distribution is because selling CD singles is still a big thing over here. You can charge 1000-1200 yen for a three to four song single which is much at odds with the whole 99 cents for a track thing. The labels still have a stranglehold on pricing. Of course the Japanese iTunes Store does exist but you're still looking at paying upwards of 250 yen per song. Vinyl has a very small market, which is why only a handful of bands do it.

You can find some surprising things on the US iTunes store - I picked up new albums by Ryukyudisko and De De Mouse for $12 a pop. Sometimes eBay will have good deals. You never know what will pop up for two bucks. I got the live Metafive disc for cheap through there. No idea how to get their studio album yet. Actually ordering the CDs new really sucks, even one that's a "bargain" (say, $18) still packs a huge shipping fee. I wish that more Japanese labels would make it easier on US fans but I guess they don't think that market really exists (maybe it doesn't?)

I've been a huge fan of Shiina Ringo since I was 16 (I'm 30 now). Her music is literally the only thing in the world - including all music, tv, games, whatever - that I'm really an active fan of. While I prefer her earlier music, everything she's ever done has also been pretty great; even her worst stuff could still be called "high quality pop music." My favorite album is Kalk Zamen Kuri no Hana, which is unbelievably good and works very well as an album rather than just a collection of tracks, if that makes sense. Tokyo Jihen (the band she formed from ~2004-2012) is also great; not only is the music good, but all the musicians are actually extremely proficient, which is something that is sadly kind of uncommon. The bassist (Seiji Kameda) and drummer (Toshiki Hata) in particular are super good. It's a pleasure to listen to their lives, because they'll often rearrange the songs. Here is an arrangement of Karisome Otome (a solo song Shiina Ringo wrote*) they did that is great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBvq-HMk1ro Honestly I'm kind of sad that Tokyo Jihen split up. Her music post-Tokyo Jihen has also been really good, but I think having the input of a collection of such talented musicians really helped with the production of her music. Here is another really good Tokyo Jihen song, Katsute wa Otoko to Onna: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RBF4ZblrgE Oh, someone mentioned Towa Tei so here's some collaboration between him and Shiina Ringo that is catchy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9qjVCi0ID4 * Shiina Ringo wrote the vast majority of Tokyo Jihen's songs, but this was written for one of her solo albums Another band I really like is Soutaiseiriron (Theory of Relativity). The singer is Etsuko Yakushimaru, who has also done some good solo stuff (though I prefer her stuff with Soutaiseiriron). Here is a cool song of theirs called Shikaku Kakumei (Square Revolution): https://youtu.be/Atc0ERea7nE?t=10m37s (actually that whole album is great, I really like Jigoku Sensei and Sawayaka Kaishain) abraham linksys posted:I came to this thread to freak out about finding this band only to find out it was in the OP the whole time! What Japanese artists have you folks seen live? Living in the U.S. I haven't seen a ton, and those I have seen are pretty typical. But I'm lucky enough to be in an often-toured city and within driving distance of another, so I can't complain. Polysics x1 Envy x1 Mono x1 Shonen Knife x2 Acid Mothers Temple x2 Boris x4 Melt-Banana x5 I missed out on Buffalo Daughter twice, but in very different ways. One time, I was going to see them with loving Yellow Magic Orchestra but I had poo poo come up that I could not ignore so I had to ditch my ticket. The other time, they were billed to open for Blonde Redhead. In line at the show there was word going around that something with their passports got hosed up so they were missing a few dates and some other band was going to open, but nobody knew who. Well, a band takes the stage and hey it's The Mars Volta. It was at a tiny hole-in-the-wall venue with low ceilings about six or seven months before De-Loused came out.

I've only heard a few of Towa Tei's songs and was wondering if all of them do that thing where "stereotypical 1950's-sounding white man speaking english in a stilted manner" is sampled in the tracks. That aside, his music has a very distinct feel to it. I find it interesting when non-English music (in this case Japanese obviously) will randomly sample/use English words. I don't think there's really a parallel in native English-language music; I can't really think of any American songs that randomly sample Chinese/French/whatever words. I imagine it's related to English having such a big media presence in most of the world and most people in countries like Japan at least having some familiarity with the language due to studying it during their school years. So if a random English word/sentence shows up in a song, the audience would at least know "hey that's an English word/sentence" (even if they can't translate it), but if you had a random Russian word show up in a song the vast majority of people from any country not near Russia would just be confused and interpret it as a nonsense word.

I'd describe their music as vaporwave-meets-jpop. It's actually a throwback to the Japanese style of city pop, which was basically vaporwave before its time both aesthetically and musically. Seaside Lovers in particular is sort of an anachronistic template of how vaporwave would sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmKNiiQBCzc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dC0R-wZt3g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkqHiUGp6yU I'd also suggest Hitomitoi, another city pop revivalist. Also, before I write another big effortpost on a genre, I'd like to share a couple pop artists I've been digging lately. Usagi to Neko have lovely glitchy production, though not as strident and dancey as something Nakata would do. They also make really enjoyable music videos. This song is a collab between producer Giga-P and vocalist Reol. Both are involved in the utaite/vocaloid scene, which is a in several senses and not something I feel qualified to cover adequately. But an utaite is basically someone who covers songs on Nicovideo (Japan's YouTube) and gains a fanbase because of it. I love Reol's voice, though, and she has crazy control during during the high-octave jumps. I also like this Nanahira song, though the uber-chirpy denpa-ish nature of her music means I can't handle it in very large doses.

Oh man, a Japanese music thread! Apparently I have more Japanese stuff than UK stuff in my foobar library so here's a long post incoming. There's a lot of pretty decent Japanese math-rock, with bands like Toe, Tricot or Lite. My favourite out of the lot of them is probably Ling Tosite Sigure, they manage to mix those math influences with post-hardcore and pop elements, and having a male and female singer adds a lot of dynamic to their tunes. Their albums have a bit too much filler imo but the Telecastic Fake Show EP is some of my favourite 15 minutes of music of all time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqYCMxhgeSU A band a bit similar to them are Mass Of The Fermenting Dredgs, they make very hard-hitting, upbeat rock music that blends alternative rock, shoegaze and post-rock. Their self-titled LP is an insanely fun record. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaTx9unXjLs Oh, and lately I've been listening to Shinsei Kamattechan a lot, they're a neat blend of dream pop/shoegaze and upbeat punk, with a handful of synths and vocal editing added. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGQfyyk7JCw Then there's Midori, who are a jazz-punk/hardcore band. Definitely check them out if you're into John Zorn and that kinda stuff, they're intense as hell. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGJ-sUvO5tg 385 are similar although instead of an upright bass there's a lot of slap bass going on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EY8_WNOXfA Also Japan's got its fair share of glitch/post-rock bands. I've seen World's End Girlfriend mentioned here, but have you guys heard of Kashiwa Daisuke? He makes similar music to WEG but is a lot more post-rock oriented, April #02 is one of my all-time favourite albums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYYpgGRmG6c Another band on the same label as these two are matryoshka, who make very pretty string-heavy ballad music, similar to Takk-era Sigur Ros. Oh and Mono, but you guys knew about them beforehand, probably. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaVu3IxxavA Then there's tons of Japanese noise bands, the most prominent being Merzbow and Melt-Banana. My favourites are Boredoms (especially their album vision creation newsun) and Nisennenmondai. The latter are really hard to describe, a krautrock band with an emphasis on noise and post-punk. Very dancable, my sister once described them as 'goa played on real instruments' and that's a pretty decent description. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huFA3jVoyT8 Lastly there's this band called downy that I really enjoy, they make some bleak/weird blend of post-punk, industrial music and trip-hop and it works ridiculously well. There's a side project of some of the members called dhal that is more heavy on electronics but similar in vibe and still very much worth checking out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wishtr0sfE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy_YduOxG7g I love the synth in the outro of the song so much, it's not even funny. And then obviously tons of weeby poo poo like anime OPs and Touhou arrangements that I also dig but let's not get into those. Satorr posted:What Japanese artists have you folks seen live? I'm not much of a hiphop guy to begin with, mind, but I do like Moe and ghosts. Cool ethereal futuristic production. Some of Suiyobi no Campanella's work falls in this vein, and occasionally reminds me a teeny bit of M.I.A. (maybe it's the mix of electronic and tribal beats?) Also, group_inou are neat.
