I looked up the game to see if it was a Vita release (because that would explain a lot) and I found an article in Portuguese defending the game with a title that translates literally to "It's just a game". I didn't know Liam was fluent in Portuguese!

Nintendo is issuing a backdown because it's going to look bad to westerners who jump to conclusions and immediately assume it is meant to be gay cleansing. Like I would be willing to believe it was a thing if it wasn't both coming from Tumblr more than any other place and it wasn't a goofy rear end Japanese game where most of the word we are getting from it is people who are intentionally looking to stir poo poo up.

The absolute best argument you could make for it is it's JUST an extremely ill conceived justification for letting a dude PC pair up with every girl, because it's inarguably that. But perhaps the smarter thing to do, which requires no insane magic powder plot, is just lock out the gay girl if you play a dude!

Oh it deserves to be insulted because it's a stupid loving thing, but the game already has gay marriage in it. There's no agenda to cure people of the gay especially since gay marriage is now a thing in Japan too. The funny and sad thing is that 99% of people don't read A rank support conversation, because there was 0 fuss about Awakening which had similar things going on (not the gay conversion thing). The main arguments from the news is definitely mostly about gay conversion which literally does not exist in the original game, but I learned that the internet can't read for poo poo beyond 125 characters.

I saw this stuff and thought "That's dumb" and that was the most reaction I had to it. I understand how and why it comes off as really bad to a lot of people, but I legit don't look at them and think some people aren't overreacting especially when they end up buying the game anyways.
