I doubt I'll convince anyone, but Christchurch is an exciting place to live. With the whole city undergoing an, albeit way too slow, regeneration, there's always something new that just been finished.

Better than that though is the lingering feeling of actual community that formed during the quakes. I've lived in NZ all my life, small and big centres, but I'd never experienced anything like what followed 2011. The residing effect is obviously more muted than it was directly following the quakes, but it manifests in people who are just so much more engaged and interested in the city in general.

If the rebuild wasn't such a shambles I would genuinely recommend people come and get involved.

Wellington is city built for people rather than cars. Auckland is really underdeveloped in the CBD, to the extent that any road that isn't one of the main streets (Queen, High, Karangahape) is really dreary and horrible to walk along. The University is right next to a four-lane highway that you have to cross to get the bus. In Wellington the whole city, from Cuba across to the Beehive, is full of interesting cafes and stores even when you turn down side-streets you haven't seen before.

You're right, Waterloo Quay is in no way just a wind tunnel of road and buildings. And the streets of Wellington certainly weren't massive and wide enough to hold a V8 Supercar race in the CBD, something that Auckland never managed.

It's not sexist, it's putting dumb poo poo that males skew more towards on to a single channel much like how sky made a sci fi channel for virgin nerds. That way people who watch tv feel that they have more choice even though it's still the same poo poo shovelled at them, and tv networks can jack prices up. If you look at the current FTA channels it's % wise more viewed by females compared to males. Why put out another channel for females?

You're still just saying "it will probably work". Like, no poo poo, this is basically a moot point. The problem is that TV is already very male dominated despite % viewers so another channel just for men is lovely. That's why people were eye rolling at the idea.

Isn't the annual payment TVNZ makes to the government considerably less than the ~$16 million of MCH funding TVNZ gets each year? I am probably wrong but I am a big dumb idiot so whatever.

Yes, but that's kind of expected from a publicly funded channel. The real issue is that their mandate to produce television has been reduced to "make a profit" instead of producing culturally important television that won't be privately funded, and then they siphon as much of that profit off in the form of bonuses and kickbacks before handing a withered cheque back to the government with a wink.

All I can think about a TVNZ man channel is "But Sky Sport already exists"
It isn't as if they are now going to be able to outbid Sky for the popular men's sports. Instead we will be left with whatever some exec at TVNZ thinks blokey blokey kiwi men want to watch that isn't sport. It is going to be cringe worthy terrible.

I just don't see what the Mannel has to offer that isn't available elsewhere. It kind of seems like a desperate grasp for TV to stay relevant in the internet age.

EDIT: Maybe they're planning on hiring Clarkson to be the face of the Mannel.

Hey, Dunedin's where I'm at too!

It's pretty tiny, so if you're used to living in big cities you could either love it or hate it. If you love big cities don't ever come here. But if you hate them then come for the fact that you can drive for less than half an hour and be at a beach or a forest or whatever.
I feel kind of claustrophobic living here too long cause of the size, but I travel a fair bit and to be honest whenever I'm overseas I can't help pining for how nice it is to not be constantly surrounded by people.

Again I'd recommend coming as a student. Get a flat in the middle of town with a bunch of other idiots and just have a great time.
If you wanted to come to work then yeah you'd probably be better in Auckland or Wellington, not the best place for jobs.
