I'd honestly be cool going to a Milsim West thing. It's just that it costs a FUCKTON of money if you want to be adequately prepared. At a minimum you need to show up with:

* Full uniform (underwear and headgear not required, but a belt and at least 3 pairs of socks are)
* Picture ID
* Notepad and pen or pencil
* Wristwatch
* Empty IFAK pouch
* The ability to carry at least 2 liters of water on your person
* Airsoft gun
* Eye protection
* Sleeping bag
* At least 2 days of food and water
* Cold/wet weather gear
* Large, heavy duty garbage bag
* A lock for your locker

That's just what you need when you arrive to be allowed to play. This isn't getting into the cost of gas and batteries for your gun(s), load-bearing gear, an optional sidearm and everything that needs to function, radios, tools and duct tape, personal hygiene stuff because you're spending two days straight on the field, etc. And then the cost of a ticket and transportation, especially if you live in a different state from the event. All in all, you could probably expect to spend anywhere from $400 to $1000 depending on how prepared you are beforehand.

When I do scenario games here, I pay $35 for a ticket and show up with the stuff I already have at my house. They even throw in a free lunch.

That said, we get some cool guys there. On Saturday I played with a retired 24-year Air Force vet who tinkered with an M60E4 replica until he had the sexiest gun on the field with a belt of inert 7.62mm going into the ammo box.

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned out backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! - An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.-
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.
